Joyce Monroe
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Joyce Monroe, 50, 2539 Hamilton Ave., died Saturday night, Oct. 11, 1997, at her residence.
Born Feb. 9, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Belausa Monroe, who survives.
She was a registered nurse at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Hurt, Va.
In addition to her mother of Columbus, survivors include two brothers, Louis Monroe and Leroy Monroe, both of Columbus.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of an uncle, Earley Monroe, Harmony Road, Long Island, Va.

James 'Gilmer' Motley
James "Gilmer" Motley, 79, 236 Hamlin Ave., died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 14, 1997, at his residence following three years of declining health.
Born June 16, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Edward Lee Motley and Ethel Johnson Motley.
On Nov. 29, 1941, he was married
to Lucile Powell Motley, who survives.
He was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church and Mason Ramah Lodge A.F. & A.M.
He was employed as a sheet metal worker by Sam Scott Roofing Co., for 10 years and for Lowe & Sons Heating and Air for 25 years.
During World War II, he was a Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force, serving in the India-Burma Campaign.
He lived most of his life in Danville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Judi Brown of Danville; and a grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 9 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Walter Pierce
Walter Edward Pierce, 87, 1 Hemlock Lane, died Monday night, Oct. 13, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 9, 1910, in Salisbury, N.C., he was the son of Walter L. Pierce and Lucille Collie Pierce.
He was married
to June Smith Pierce, who survives.
He was originally in the tobacco warehouse business, and he later built and operated Virginia Manor Motel, after which he was the developer and builder of Pinetag Estates.
He was a graduate of William and Mary. During World War II, he had served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of Danville Golf Club and First Presbyterian Church, and a former member of Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Pierce Gray of Providence, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth P. Bridgeman of Burlington, Vt.; and a grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Irene Witcher
CHATHAM - Irene Brown Witcher, 86, of Route 3, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, at Stratford Health Care in Danville.
Born March 9, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Stewart Brown and Emma Wright Brown.
She was married
to Stonewall Witcher, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Watson Level Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Fuller of Chatham and Daisy Dawson of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Matthew Witcher of Richmond and Harvey Witcher of Hurt; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Mandy Keatts and Betty Davis; and five brothers, Boagard, Henry, Buster and Jesse Wright and Joseph Brown.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Katie McKenzie. Burial will be in Watson Level Baptist Church cemetery.
Wayne Compton
CHATHAM - Wayne Vincent Compton, 35, 201 Woodlawn Academy Road, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 15, 1997, at Avante Nursing Home in Lynchburg.
Born Jan. 29, 1962, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lillian Ruth Keatts Compton and Hubert Marshall Compton, who survives.
He was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church, and he was self-employed.
In addition to his father of Danville, survivors include three sisters, Ann C. Moser of Chatham, Linda C. Moore of Danville and Betty C. Walden of Climax; and two brothers, Earl M. Compton of Chatham and James H. Compton of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Open Bible Baptist Church by Pastor Dean Lamphere and the Rev. Albert Moser. Burial will be in Church of God of Prophecy cemetery in Java.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
C.T. Fuller
Calvert Thomas Fuller Jr., 74, 170 Franklin Court, died Oct. 14, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several years and had been in the hospital since Sept. 28, 1997.
Born Aug. 4, 1923, in Callands, he was a son of Calvert Thomas Fuller Sr. and Pearl Herndon Fuller, who survives.
Mr. Fuller had lived most of his life in Danville.
He was a salesman for Plumbing & Mill Supplies Inc. and retired in the mid-70s due to a decline in health.
Mr. Fuller was a member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church, serving for many years as a deacon.
He was a member of American Legion Post 325.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his mother of Callands, survivors include a sister, Annie Laura Fuller Robinson of Richmond; a brother, Matthew Herndon Fuller of Richmond; two grandsons, John T. Barbour and Brian S. Barbour, both of Danville; and a son-in-law, Lyn Barbour of Danville.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a sister, Jean Lorene Fuller; and a daughter, Janice Ann Fuller Barbour.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today, Oct. 16, 1997, in the Fuller Family cemetery, near his mother's home on 20305 Franklin Turnpike, Callands, by the Rev. Ralph E. McCormack of Memorial Presbyterian Church and the Rev. Robert Royal of Liberty Baptist Church.

Ronald Meadors
Ronald Carlton Meadors, 145 Howeland Circle, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, in Danville.
Born June 20, 1960, in Danville, he was the son of Oscar and Hazel Meadors, who survive.
He was married
to Karen Box Meadors, who survives.
He was a former member of Mt. Herman U.F.D. and Trinity U.M.C.
In addition to his wife of the residence and parents of Danville, survivors include a son, Zachary Ryan Meadors of Danville; a daughter, Hannah Grace Meadors of Danville; two stepdaughters, Emily Burch and Sarah Burch, both of Danville; a stepson, Charles Burch of Danville; a brother, Kenneth I. Meadors of Danville; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Levi Stroud and the Rev. Don Davidson. The burial is private.

Cecile Virginia Willis Midkiff
GRETNA - Cecile Virginia Willis Midkiff, 78, of 123 North Franklin Blvd. died Wednesday, October 15, 1997, at her residence.
Born April 6, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Wyatt Berkley Willis and Audrey Virginia Lovelace Willis.
She was predeceased by a son, Howard Thomas Midkiff Jr.; a brother, Lloyd Willis; and a half brother, Jack Crider.
Mrs. Midkiff was educated in the public school system of Pittsylvania County, and worked as a correspondent for the Star Tribune for over 30 years.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna.
She is survived by her husband, Howard Thomas Midkiff of the residence; a daughter and son-in-law, Dell M. Tyler and Don L. Tyler of Gretna; one son, David W. Midkiff of Hurt. Three sisters, Mabel W. Mayhew and Nera W. Shields, both of Gretna, and Iris Crider Shelton of Richmond. Four grandchildren, Don Tyler Jr. and his wife, Jo Ann, Lisa Tyler, Howard Tyler and David Thomas Midkiff. Three great-grandchildren, Jonathan Tyler, Charles Tyler and Catherine Tyler.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, October 17, 1997, at First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Rev. Glenn Graves, the Rev. W.D. Lilly and the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Interment
will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

RINGGOLD - Elijah Hunt, 58, 285 Rushing Branch Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at his residence.
Born June 26, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Mozelle Hunt.
He is survived by a brother, Royal Hunt of Ringgold.
