Nora Lyons Beavers, 67, of Galax, died April 29, 2005 at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville. She is survived by a daughter and fiancee', Dianna Highlander and Glen Fitzgerald, Standardsville; mother, Marie Lyons, Galax; brothers, Virgil Lyons and Marshall Lyons both of Galax; two grandchildren, two step grandchildren. Funeral service was held May 3, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church. Rev. James Cowley and Elder Herbert Rutherford officiated. Interment was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Baywood.

Swanson Lewis (Cotton) Burcham, 67, of Fries, died May 1, 2005 at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Burcham, Galax; daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Frankie Fortner, Fries; sisters, Melba Lineberry, Novella Coleman, Joyce Isom and Shirley Hill all of Fries; brothers, Lonnie Burcham, Otis Burcham and Rex Burcham all of Fries; Gary Burcham, Fredericksburg. Funeral service will be held May 4, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Vaughan - Guynn Chapel. Pastor Bill Linkous, Rev. Ron Hill and Pastor D. G. Fox will officiate. Interment will be in Felts Cemetery. Tony Cottrell, 58, of Galax, died April 29, 2005 at Grayson Nursing & Rehab Center. He is survived by daughters, Missy Cottrell and Beverlee Trotter, both of Galax; sons, Tony Cottrell, Jr. and Andre' Cottrell both of Galax; sister, Helen Brown, Galax; thirteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren. A graveside service was held May 3, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the Oldtown Cemetery. Rev. Raymond Brown, Jr., Elder Denver Brown and Rev. Larry Cutler officiated.

Stella Alice Worrell McGrady

Stella Alice Worrell McGrady, 86, of Martinsville died Saturday, April 30, 2005 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Born in Carroll County, Virginia on December 9, 1918, the daughter of the late Roscoe Worrell and the late Mellie Midkiff Worrell. Also predeceased by her husband, Henry A. McGrady, Sr., and a son, William McGrady. Surviving are her four sons, Wesley McGrady of Bassett, Roby McGrady of Hillsville, Garnett McGrady of Roanoke, and Henry A. McGrady, Jr. of Martinsville; one daughter, Lillian Belcher of Laurel Fork, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Visitation was held Sunday, May 1, 2005 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel. Funeral service was conducted on Monday, May 2, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel. Daryl B. Martin officiated. Burial was in Laurel Fork Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett handled the arrangements.

William D. Watson

William D. Watson, 80, of Hillsville, passed away on Feb. 28, 2009 at his residence. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Lora Sutphin Watson; brothers, David Watson and Russell Watson; and sister, Mary Marshall. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Horton Watson of the home; brother, Glen Watson of Hillsville; sister, Stella Hayes of Dublin; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, Mar. 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vaughan Guynn McGrady Chapel, with Pastor David Bays and Bishop Randall Lawrence officiating. Burial followed in Highland Memory Gardens Hillsville Masonic Lodge 193 AF & AM performed Masonic Rites at the service. Vaughan Guynn McGrady of Hillsville was in charge of the arrangements.
James Russell Smith

James Russell Smith, age 80, of Pulaski, went to be with the Lord, Friday morning, April 29, 2005, at his home on Claytor Lake, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 6, 1924 in Sylvatus, VA. He was retired from General Electric in Salem, where he was a shipping/receiving specialist for 25 years. A very patriotic man, he was a WWII Navy veteran and served on the USS Sloat where he had the privilege of sailing over many parts of the world. He was also a lifetime member of VFW 1115 in Hillsville, VA and the Disabled American Veterans. Russell is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mamie Bond Smith, as well as his parents, Joseph Perry Smith and Willie Mae Smith. He is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Joe Bishop of Dublin; Diane and Carson Dalton of Dublin; and Carol Smith of Pulaski; his beloved brother and sister-in-law, Barton and Norma Smith of Sylvatus; his grandchildren, Jana and Jeff Beckner of Draper; Laura and Kevin McDowell of Christiansburg; Mary and Jonathan Cheverton of Dublin; Bradley Dalton and Darren Dalton of Dublin; his great grandchildren, Jacob Beckner and Faith McDowell; his special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Berta and Carl Viars of Pulaski; his brother-in-law, LaHugh Bond of Wythe County; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Russell will always be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a hard worker and a proud veteran. He was very generous, giving and loved to share with others. He was deeply loved by his daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His sons-in-law highly admired and respected him as their father-in-law. Funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2005 at the Dublin Church of God. Rev. Michael Collins and Rev. Danny McGlothin officiated. Interment followed with Military Honors at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family received friends Sunday, May 1, 2005, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Dublin Church of God. Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski handled the arrangements.
