Estelle James
Estelle Jennings James, 88, 9780 Mt. Cross Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 8, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Thomas and Nannie Jennings.
She was married
to John James, who predeceased her.
Survivors include nine daughters, Nannie James and Olden Carter, both of Dry Fork, and Norma Walton of Sutherlin, Verstell Day of Washington D.C., and Mae Frances Deering, Eunice Pool, Rita Spell and Myrtle James, all of Danville; five sons, Roskey James, Edward James and Kenneth James, all of Danville, and John L. James of Pelham, N.C., and Odell James of Eden, N.C.; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by Elder Joseph Smith. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Harry 'Butch' Lilly
Harry "Butch" Lilly, 50, 605 Old Mt. Cross Road, died at Duke Hospital following an auto accident.
Born June 19, 1947, in Greensboro, N.C., he was a son of Fred Lilly and Mary H. Lilly, who survives.
On April 15, 1967, he was married
to Sherley Hutchins Lilly, who survives.
He was self-employed as a distributor for USANA Co. He also had worked at Dixie Bearings Inc. for many years.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, and was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks.
He had served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Eden, N.C., survivors include a son, Todd Lilly of Danville; two daughters, Katherine Lilly of Norfolk and Athena Williford of Burton, Mich.; a brother, Richard "Rick" Lilly of Reidsville, N.C.; a sister, Forest Swaney of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home with rites performed by the Elks.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 605 Old Mt. Cross Road.
Margaret McGuire
Margaret Oakes McGuire, 57, 405 Stephens St., died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at her residence.
Born Sept. 2, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Henry Oakes and Ruth Ann Gibson Oakes.
She was married
to Billy Lee McGuire, who survives.
She was a member of Oak Ridge Christian Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Terry Lee McGuire and Barry Onell McGuire, both of Danville; three brothers, Shirley Oakes of Danville, Turner Oakes of Chatham and the Rev. Jack Oakes of Ruffin, N.C.; five sisters, Jetty O. Lewis, Betty O. Hyler and Mary O. Hedrick, all of Danville, and Linda O. Shelton of Chatham and Edna O. Davis of Newport News; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Joe M. Beck and the Rev. J.D. Hunt III. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Claude Pritchett Jr.
Claude "Hot Shot" Pritchett Jr., 52, 432 Camp St., died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 2, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Claude Pritchett Sr. and Mary Elliott.
He graduated from Southside High School in 1964.
Survivors include three sons, Gregory Miller of Halifax and Christopher Graves and Chesley Graves, both of Danville; five sisters, Bessie More of Glen Burney, Md., and Doris McIntyre, Maxine Hereford, Mary Ann Sutzer and Sherby Freeman, all of Danville; and two brothers, Charles Pritchett and Seldon Pritchett, both of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Camp Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest Barksdale and the Rev. W.J. Toomer. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Erma Payne
CHATHAM - Erma Lee Burnett Payne, 76, 309 Beverly Hts. Road, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Stratford Health Center in Danville.
Born Jan. 10, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Agusta Thomas Burnett and Hattie Nuckols Burnett.
She was married
to Silas Andrew Payne Sr., who survives.
She was a member of Union Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of Chatham, survivors include two sons, Silas "Andy" Payne Jr. of Chatham and Harry Payne of Callands; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Raymond Goad and the Rev. Haywood Alcorn. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Gladys Ludwick
Gladys E. Ludwick, 87, 328 Moffett St., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 2, 1910, in Danville, she was a daughter of James Henry Ludwick and Lillie Lawrence Ludwick.
She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
Prior to her retirement in 1973, she was employed by Dan River Inc.
She is survived by a sister, Pearl L. Hyler of Danville.
She was predeceased by a brother, Harvie L. Ludwick, and two sisters, Gracie L. O'Neal and Zela L. Hundley.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Charlie Womack
Charlie Walker Womack, 86, of Halifax, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born March 10, 1911, in Halifax County, he was the son of Robert Lemuel Womack and Pattie Roberts Womack.
He was married
to Catherine White Womack, who survives.
He was a farmer and a retired employee of the Town of Halifax.
He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, where he was an honorary deacon and trustee.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Ernest Womack and Charlie Womack, both of Halifax, Tiny Womack of South Boston and Garnett Womack of Manassas; two sisters, Alice Blanks and Aneta Throckmoton, both of South Boston; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will follow at church cemetery.

John Brown
John Brown, 86, 421 Bradley Road, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 10, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Newton Brown and Fannie Moss Brown.
He was a retired textile worker for Dan River Inc., and a landscaper.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Ferguson Brown of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Terry Ferguson. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.

Deloris Majett
PHILADELPHIA - Deloris Mimms Majett, 55, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, in Philadelphia after an extended illness.
Born Oct. 17, 1941, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mimms Sr.
Survivors include her husband, David Majett of Philadelphia; a sister, Mary Jones of Danville, Va.; two brothers, George Withers of Westfield, N.J., and Charles Mimms Jr. of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Della Reese Mayo.

Ferd Terry Jr.
BELTSVILLE, Md. - Obie Ferd "Bugs" Terry Jr., 66, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington, D.C., after an extended illness.
Born May 26, 1931, in Java, Va., he was the son of Obie Ferd Terry Sr. and Clara B. Terry, who survives.
He was married
to Fern Wilcox Terry, who predeceased him.
Most of his life was spent as a master mechanic of many trades, but he was best known for his work with antique cars and trucks and their restoration.
During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Beltsville.
In addition to his mother of Danville, Va., survivors include two sisters, Mary Jo Crane and Virginia Tuck, both of Danville; a brother, Marvin Terry of Florence, S.C.; a stepson, Dennis Harris; and two grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Patsy T. Spencer.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Beltsville by the Rev. Terry Stockman. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Cheltenham, Md.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. in Laurel, Md.
