Robert 'Jack' Austin
CLARKSVILLE - Robert C. "Jack" Austin, 75, 92 Mooresville Park, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born May 16, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Robert Jackson Austin and Annie Hatcher Austin.
He was a retired sales manager for Sears.
He was a member of County Line Christian Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna Lee Hay of Orangeburg, S.C., and Bonnie Susan Austin of Sarasota, Fla.; a son, Robert Bruce Austin of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Clayton Austin of Tonga, South Pacific, and Alton Austin of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in County Line Christian Church cemetery by the Rev. J.D. Hunt.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home.
Ralph Eagle
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ralph A. Eagle, 88, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at Columbia Largo Medical Center.
Born in Spring Valley, Ohio, he moved from Columbus, Ohio, to Clearwater in 1979.
He was married
for 64 years to Harriet Eagle, who survives.
For 37 years, he worked as a mail clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Columbus, Ohio. He later worked in budget marketing for Columbus Jets Baseball.
He attended the University of Miami in Ohio.
He was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church in Clearwater.
He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge F.A. & A.M. in Mt. Washington, Ohio, and the High Noon Club. He coached Little League Baseball for many years.
In addition to his wife of Largo, survivors include a son, John Eagle of Danville, Va.; a daughter, Sally Evans of Chardon, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Charles Eagle.

James Gantsoudes
REDDING, Conn. - James George Gantsoudes, 55, managing director and global head of Equity Capital Markets at Morgan Stanley, Dean Witter, Discover & Company, died Oct. 17, 1997, at his home in Redding after a long illness.
The son of George Gantsoudes, now deceased, and Helen Gantsoudes of Danville, Mr. Gantsoudes graduated from George Washington High School in 1960 and from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1964. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967, and received a Bronze Star for heroism.
Upon retiring from the Army, he attended the Harvard Business School from which he received his MBA in 1971.
Mr. Gantsoudes had a distinguished career on Wall Street. He joined Morgan Stanley in 1974 and later became head of U.S. equity sales. From 1983 to 1985, he ran Lehman Brothers' sales and trading business. In 1985, he joined Dillon Read to start their equity sales, trading and research departments. In 1990, he moved to CS First Boston, where he was global head of equity sales, trading and research. Mr. Gantsoudes rejoined Morgan Stanley in 1995.
Mr. Gantsoudes is survived by his wife, Martha; their three children, Sarah, Spencer and Nicholas; his two children by a previous marriage, George and Alexis; his mother, Helen; his sister, Betsy Robeson; and his brother, Peter.
A service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Gantsoudes home, 279 Poverty Hollow Road, Redding, Conn. Contributions can be made to Treasurer, Redding Boys and Girls Club, 223 Umpawaug Road, Redding, Conn. 06896.
Effie Lumpkins
Effie Epps Lumpkins, 77, 9706 N.C. 700, of the Mayfield Community, died Monday night, Oct. 20, 1997, at Stratford Health Care Center. She had been in declining health for the past two-and-a-half years.
Born May 7, 1920, in Lincolnton, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Guy Epps and Mary Heavner Epps.
She was married
to Charlie Herman Lumpkins, who survives.
A resident of Danville and the Mayfield Community for most of her life, she was retired from Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Danny H. Lumpkins of Macon, Ga.; a daughter, Linda Lumpkins Crowder of the Mayfield community; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Dexter Lee Lumpkins.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Loy Kennedy. The burial will be private.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 9720 N.C. 700 in the Mayfield Community.
Ernest Witcher
Ernest Bobb Witcher, 54, 201 D Seminole Trail, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 28, 1943, in Norfolk, he was a son of Vincent Henry Witcher Jr. and Annie Bobb Witcher, who survives.
He was married
to Susan Dunn Witcher, who survives.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Gretna.
He was a sales representative with National Motor Club of America.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a graduate of Old Dominion University, and received his MBA from Averett College.
In addition to his mother of Penhook and wife of the residence, survivors include three brothers, Vincent H. Witcher III and Ronald B. Witcher, both of Richmond, and James S. Witcher of Virginia Beach.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church by Dr. John Ruef. Burial will be in Liberty Memorial cemetery, Sandy Level.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his mother, 1620 Armstrong Road, Penhook.
Alfred Fisher Sr.
ROANOKE - Alfred Thurman Fisher Sr., 73, died Tuesday, October 21, 1997.
He was a retired truck driver.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Hubbard Fisher; sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Kay Fisher, Dale and Trudy Fisher, Alfred Jr. and Virginia Fisher; daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and David Ayers, Carolyn Hartman, Danville, Dorothy and Hubert Fleenor Jr.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Mrs. O.M. Hubbard, Virginia; brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Bertha Fisher, Utah, Hubert and Sue Fisher, Virginia; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille Palmer, Pennsylvania, Frances Weaver, Utah, Virginia and Paul Muse, Virginia, Carrie and Ralph Coon, Virginia.
Funeral services will be at Oakey's Vinton Chapel 2 p.m. today, October 23, 1997, with the Rev. Terry A. Mabrey officiating. Interment
will be in the Barnhardt Baptist Church cemetery.
Myrl Jackson
Myrl Duncan Henley Jackson, 81, formerly of 10 Dula St., died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 22, 1997, at Stratford Health Center, where she had resided since March 1997. She had been in declining health for five years.
Born April 10, 1916, in Hillsville, she was the daughter of Leb Duncan and Callie Quesenberry Duncan.
She was married
to Ruby R. Henley, who predeceased her. She was later married
to Clarence Jackson, who also predeceased her.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she worked for Dan River, Inc., for 20 years before retiring on disability in 1963.
She was a member of Holland Road Baptist Church.
She was the last member of her generation of the family.
Survivors include a son, Lawrence Henley of Danville; four daughters, Pearl Fugat, Callie Moss and Ruth Snead, all of Danville, and Trevie Barden of Richmond; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Samuel L. Greeson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Ruth Snead, 522 Park Avenue.
Kellie Lewis
Kellie Lynn Lewis, 14, 575 Iris Lane, died Tuesday night, Oct. 21, 1997, at her residence.
Born April 29, 1983, in Danville, she was the daughter of Thomas Lee Lewis and Wendy Bean Lewis, who survive.
A resident of the Danville area her entire life, she was a freshman at Tunstall High School.
She was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents of Danville, survivors include a brother, Daniel Lewis of Danville; her maternal grandparents, Howard and Joan Campbell of Danville; and her paternal grandparents, Vernon and Glenda Owens of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Victory Baptist Church by the Rev. Hylton Lawrence. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Jacob 'Jake' Watson
BEDFORD - Jacob Owen "Jake" Watson, 88, of Bedford, departed this life on Tuesday, October 21, 1997, at his residence.
He was born in Bedford County on March 7, 1909, a son of the late Caleb Owen Watson and Etna Josephine Mayhew Watson.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleanor J. Watson and three brothers and two sisters.
He was retired from Rubatex Corp. and a member of Main St. United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Louise W. Watson; a daughter, Doris W. Witt and her husband, David, of Danville; three sons, Rodger J. Watson and his wife, Nancy, of Lynchburg; Elbert O. Watson and his wife, Pamela, of Fallston, Md.; and Walter W. Watson and his wife, Katie, of West Bend, Wis.; a sister, Ruth W. Smith, Bedford; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, October 24, 1997, at Main St. United Methodist Church with the Rev. D. Glen Langston officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
