Delvecchio Farmer
Delvecchio "Main" Centa Farmer, 20, 228 Keeling Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at his residence.
Born Jan. 16, 1977, in Danville, he was the son of Charles Glass and Bertha Glass and the late Isaac Farmer.
Survivors include his mother, Bertha Glass of Danville; three sisters, Lakisha King, Larissa Farmer and Glorenda Farmer, all of Danville; a brother, Joelkenda Farmer of Danville; two grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Farmer of Blairs; and a great-grandfather, Rufus Blackwell.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home, Inc. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
J.B. Farthing
Jesse B. "J.B." Farthing, 83, 2584 Afton Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
The son of Jesse and Florence Farthing Hammock, he was born April 9, 1914, in Pittsylvania County.
On April 5, 1946, he married
Cora Daniel Farthing, who died in 1995.
He lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County.
He retired from Dan RiverInc. Schoolfield Division as a quality inspector after several years of service.
He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church and a member of the Improved Order of Red Men, Poquoson Tribe No. 124.
He served with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by two daughters, Sandra F. Giles of Danville, and Judith F. Stah of Springfield; two sons, Jesse L. Farthing of Clifton and Stephen D. Farthing of Yorktown; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Interment
will follow in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, and other times at the residence, 2584 Afton Road, off of Franklin Turnpike.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
Gladys Olsen
DUNEDIN, FL. - Gladys Evelyn Hill Olsen, 93, died Oct. 5, 1997.
Born in 1904 in Providence, R.I., she was the daughter of John H. and Jessie Cushing Hill.
She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design.
In 1926, she married
Walter W. Olsen.
She worked as a fashion illustrator in Boston.
She was a business partner with her husband in Danville, Va., and Martinsville, Va.
She and her husband retired to Clearwater, Fla., in 1972.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Denson of Prescott, Ariz.; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
Wendy Smith
ROSEDALE, N.Y. - Wendy M. Smith, 47, of 133 Ave., died Monday in Brooklyn.
Born Jan. 2, 1950, in New York, she was the daughter of Janie Horton of Rosedale, N.Y., who survives, and Witten Price.
She was a banking officer at Chemical Bank in New York and was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in New York.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Ekelley Smith of Norfolk, Va.; her stepmother, Pauline C. Price of Penhook, Va.; two sisters, Deloris White of Queens and Odessie Shuler of Manhattan; a brother, Robert Horton of Bronx; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday from the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home in Gretna, Va., by the Rev. Mitchell Hudson. Burial will follow in the Brooks Family cemetery in Callands, Va.
The family will receive friends at the residence of an aunt, Dorothy Moore, 12575 Snow Creek Road, Penhook, Va.
Kenneth Wood
Kenneth Ray Wood Sr., 67, 136 Avalon Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
The son of Ernest B. Wood and Olivia P. Wood, he was born May 6, 1930, in Meadows of Dan.
He was first married
to Nancy K. Wood, who died in 1991. He later married
Vesta Whitt Wood, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville and was retired from C & P Telephone, where he had worked for 37 years.
He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church and the Telephone Pioneers.
He was a former member of the Virginia National Guard.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Kenneth Ray Wood Jr. of Dry Fork and Mark Stephen Wood of Danville; two daughters, Karen W. Hand of Richmond and Cynthia W. Talley of Danville; a sister, Jean Bostic of Danville; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one step-grandchild; and one step-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. William C. Blalock. Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
Sallie Bates
Sallie Adkins Bates, 86, of 3733 Glenview Drive, died Thursday evening, Oct. 23, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Nov. 2, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Fletcher Moses Adkins and Rosie Myers Adkins.
She was a member of Salem Church of Christ. She was married
to Eddie Bates on Oct. 15, 1946; he died on Dec. 1, 1976.
She was predeceased by a son, Bobby Lee Bates, a brother, Jimmie H. Adkins, and a sister, Archie A. Haley.
Survivors include a brother, Earnest W. Adkins of Chatham; two sisters, Martha A. Dodd of Dry Fork, and Annie A. Keatts of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Salem Church of Christ by the Rev. Larry Owen with burial in the Adkins family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham and at other times at the residence of her brother at 4272 Strawberry Road in Chatham.
Herbert Ferguson Jr.
Herbert A. Ferguson Jr., 72, of Sanibel Island, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, Fla.
Born Aug. 21, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Herbert A. Ferguson and Cora H. Ferguson.
He graduated from George Washington High School and Virginia Tech, as well as the Air War College. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot in World War II. He retired from the Diplomatic Corp. Foreign Service in 1975.
Survivors include his wife, Mona Ferguson of Sanibel Island; and a sister, Hyldren Rix of Indianapolis, Ind.
Harold Martin
Harold Thomas Martin, 61, of 669 Indian Valley Road, died Friday morning, Oct. 24, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a six-month decline in health.
Born Feb. 3, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charles Emory Martin and Gertrude Burnett Martin.
Before his decline in health he was employed in construction as a carpenter. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his mother of Danville; one daughter, Joy M. Wyatt of Danville; a son, Thomas Alvis Martin of Laurenburg, N.C.; two brothers, Melvin Martin and Paul Martin, both of Danville; one sister, Betty M. Jenkins of Hampton; and four grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Wayne Wallace. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
'Jimmy' Nunn
James "Jimmy" Edward Nunn, 64, of Clarksville, departed this life on Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda D. Nunn of Red Oak; two sons, Len Nunn and wife Sharon of Danville, and Tim Nunn and wife Judy of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Sheri Nunn States and husband Michael of Charlottesville, and Pamela Nunn of Farmville; three stepdaughters, Eva Reid and husband Gwynn of Red Oak, Ginger Pharr and husband Leonard of Clarksville, and Tara DeJarnett of Red Oak; two sisters, Vilma Nunn McClellan of Clarksville, and Brenda Nunn Davis and husband Lawrence of Roaring Gap, N.C.; two grandsons, nine stepgrandchildren and one step-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at First Christian Church on Marshall Street in Chase City. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Bobby Adams.
An informal gathering will be held at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Family and friends are invited to visit the with family.

Alma Ricketts
Alma Ricketts, 80, formerly of Stokes Street, died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born March 27, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Edward Bennett Ricketts and Ruth Richardson Ricketts.
She was a member of College Park Baptist Church. She received a bachelor's degree from Longwood College and, until her retirement, was a teacher in the Danville and Pittsylvania County school systems.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, nieces and nephews and cousins.
Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 8-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
