Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Doris Gray

Doris Mangrum Gray, 71, formerly of the Bachelors Hall community, died Friday morning, Oct. 24, 1887, at the Piedmont Geriatric Hospital, Burkeville, where she had resided for the past 14 years.

Born Dec. 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Ernest Mangrum and Sallie Mae Gregory Mangrum.

She had spent most of her life in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County. She was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church and had previously worked at the Memorial Hoispital of Danville as a nurses aide.

Survivors include one son, Roger Lea Gray of Tallahassee, Fla.; one brother, Linwood Glenn Mangrum of Newport News; two sisters, Mildred Mangrum Pritchett of Dry Fork and Peggy Mangrum Dalton of Bachelors Hall; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. David Ball. Burial will follow in the Mangrum family cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 8:30 and at other times will be at the residence of her sister, Peggy Dalton, at 9668 Martinsville Highway.

James Lewis

James Edward Lewis, 82, of Gretna, died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Gretna Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 18, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Edward Lewis and Birdie Mitchell Lewis.

He was a shoe repairman.

Survivors include two sons, Alex Lewis and Roger Lewis, both of Danville; one brother, Willard Lewis of Gretna; six sisters, Pauline Smith of Roanoke, Margaret Horne of Maryland, Louise Lowe of Crofton, Md., Laura Ingram of Norfolk, and Eloise Jones and Ruth Shelton, both of Gretna.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Gretna Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery by Randy Parker, minister.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Ruth Shelton, at 172 North West Circle, Gretna.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie Womack

VICTORIA - Johnnie Henry Womack, 73, of Route 1, Box 159, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at Community Memorial Healthcenter in South Hill.

Born Dec. 4, 1923, in Halifax County, he was the son of Henry and Emma Womack.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. during the early 1940s.

A lifelong farmer, he was a member of Thrift's Chapel United Methodist Church in Lunenburg County.

Survivors include his wife, Estelle Martin Womack of the residence; two daughters, Doris Cox and her husband, Phil, of Chase City, and Joan Glover and her husband, Mike, of Mechanicsville; one son, Rocky Womack of Danville; two granddaughters, Sharon Cox Conclough of Florida and Laura Glover of Mechanicsville; one grandson, Ben Cox of Mississippi; 10 sisters, Elnora "Ella" Carr and Annie Mae Tuck, both of South Boston, Elizabeth Martin of Clover, Emma Ellis of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Minnie Gordon of Chase City, O'Neil McCormick of Alton, Mildred Womack of Vernon Hill, and Frances Bomar, Christine Bane and Linda Hamlett, all of Scottsville; three brothers, Howard Womack of Scottsburg, Henry "Junior" Womack of South Boston and Raymond Womack of Mechanicsville; and his stepmother, Nannie Womack of Brian Nursing Home in Lawrenceville.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1997, at Staples Funeral Home in Victoria by the Rev. Richard Galbreath. Burial will be in the Lakeview cemetery, Victoria.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Staples Funeral Home.

The family requests that donations be made to Thrift's Chapel United Methodist Church in Victoria and Hospital Hospitality House in Richmond.

Elizabeth Farrow

Elizabeth Lewis Farrow, 87, 508 North Pinte Lane, Apt.101, died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 6, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Nicholas Lewis and Elizabeth Donelson.

She had been employed by Dan River Inc.

She was a member of St. James Baptist Church and Daughters of Successful Tent #476.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel L. Garland Jr. of Washington, D.C., and William T. Farrow of New York City; and one daughter, Annie Mae Smith of Washington, D.C.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Baptist Church by the Rev. J.P. Griffith. Interment icon will follow in the Oak Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Farrow may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence.

William Langhorne

William Dabney Langhorne, 89, of Richmond, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997.

He was the son of James Maurice Langhorne and Myrtle Dabney Langhorne.

He was married to Florence M. Langhorne, who survives.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member and Elder of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Joppa Lodge #40 AF&AM.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Myrtle L. Wilson of Danville and Mary Dabney L. Hurley of Bluefield; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hollywood cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.

Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., Richmond, is in charge of arrangements.

John Williams

John Hardy Williams, 87, died Saturday evening, Oct. 25, 1997, at the Stratford Health Center after a decline in health since 1993.

He was born on July 13, 1910, in Franklin County.

His wife was Mildred Wilkerson Williams, who preceded him in death.

He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked for Dan River Inc. before retiring.

He was a veteran of the U.S. National Guard, and was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, June Dalton of Danville; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the mausoleum at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. S. Felton Carter. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home 7-8:30 tonight and other times will be at his daughter's residence, 516 Kemper Road.

Hester Yates

Hester Adele Dixon Yates, 83, 9220 N.C. 65, Stokesdale, N.C., died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at her residence after several years of declining health.

Born Aug. 7, 1914, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of E.B. Dixon and Hattie F. Dixon.

She was married to Claude Benjamin Yates Jr., who died Jan. 8, 1990.

She spent most of her life in the Vernon Hill community, where she was a member of County Line Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Glen "Bobby" Yates of Stokesdale, N.C., Douglas Benjamin Yates of Madison, N.C., and Donald Keith Yates of Missouri; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at County Line Baptist Church by the Rev. Joey Cantrell. Interment icon will be in County Line Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Charles 'C.C.' Cavanaugh

SUMTER, S.C. - Charles Cleveland "C.C." Cavanaugh, 15, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Iraklion, Crete, Greece, he was the son of Marcus O. Cavanaugh and Nancy L. Cutsinger Cavanaugh.

He attended Lakewood High School, and was a lieutenant in the Junior ROTC Program.

In addition to his parents of Sumter, survivors include a sister, Sarah Cavanaugh of the residence; his maternal grandfather, Abe Cutsinger of Danville, Va.; and his paternal grandmother, Sarah Doris Warren of Smithfield, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at the Friendship Chapel at Shaw Air Force Base by Chaplain W.J. Marshall. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence, 4625 Highway 15 South.

Melvin Coward

CALLANDS - Melvin Rupert Coward, 73, 1012 Barn Road, died Monday morning, Oct. 27, 1997, at his residence.

Born June 23, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William M. Coward and Tabitha Aaron Coward.

He was married to Rachel Reynolds Coward, who survives.

He was a member of County Line Christian Church, and was retired from furniture factories in Martinsville.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force as a flight maintenance gunner in the 483rd Bomb Group. He flew 35 missions on a B-17 Bomber over Northern Italy.

He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star and numerous other medals during his military career.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Tony Coward of Collinsville, Michael Coward of Danville and Perry Coward of Callands; a daughter, Robin Coward of Callands; two brothers, Fred Coward of Danville and Justice E. Coward of Callands; and four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. J.D. Hunt III.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, Chatham, and other times at the residence in Callands.
