Bennie Haynes
Bennie Merchant Haynes, 68, 404 Airport Drive, died Monday night, Nov. 3, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 23, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Edgar L. Haynes and Lucy Hyler Haynes.
He was married
to Lenora Brooks Haynes, who survives.
Most of his life was spent in the Danville area.
After 30 years of service, he was retired from Cooper Electrical Company in Greensboro, N.C., as superintendent.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Johnnie A. Haynes of Danville, Mike S. Haynes of Baltimore and Dannie L. Haynes of Pensacola, Fla.; a daughter, Janice H. Player of Baltimore; a brother, Herman L. Haynes of Madison, N.C.; two sisters, Laura H. Hazelwood of Sutherlin and Doris H. Holley of Danville; eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Chapel by the Elder Doug Curry. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Fred Miller
Fred Joseph Miller, 74, 110 Front St., died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Duke Medical Center after a year of declining health.
Born April 15, 1923, in Mt. Clemens, MI, he was the son of Edward L. Miller and Clara Rivard Miller.
On Jan. 22, 1946, he was married
to Elva Rowland Miller, who died on March 28, 1994.
He worked at Dan River Mills for 41 years, from 1947 until his retirement in 1988. Then he worked for the Pinkerton Security Services as a guard at the Disston Plant. He had last worked as a warehouse supervisor for Lawrence and Nester Distributing Co., until he had to retire due to his health.
He was a Roman Catholic of French-Canadian descent. From age 4, he was raised in a Catholic orphanage in Detroit. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He had resided in Danville since completing his military service.
He entered the Army Air Corp on May 15, 1941, and served in New Guinea during World War II. He received the American Defense Service Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Battle Star and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Battle Star. He completed his service on Jan. 3, 1946.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Miller Shelhorse of Danville; a stepson, Earnest Barbour of Java; two sisters, Elsie M. Prentice of Pahoa, Hawaii, and Mildred M. Dunlevy of Fayetteville, Ark.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Ascension Lutheran Church by the Rev. David McGuire. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence, 110 Front St.
Carrie Roach
GRETNA - Carrie Bosiger Roach, 78, 340 Lotus Drive, died Monday, Nov. 3, 1997, at Stratford House in Danville.
Born July 5, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Adolphus Bosiger and Mary Shelton Bosiger.
She was married
to Thomas Wesley Roach, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Piney Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn R. Ragsdale of Java and Shirley Roach of Gretna; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Piney Fork Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Glass. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Clyde Young
MARTINSVILLE - Clyde Hampton Young, 78, 545 Southland Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center.
Born Sept. 29, 1919, in Franklin County, he was a son of Denver Bryan Young and Emily May Sink Young.
He was a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church.
Survivors include five sisters, Alice Kyle Cook, Billie Nance and Fern Setliff, all of Danville, and Rene Harris of Martinsville and Selma Lakey of Apoka, Fla.; and a brother, Denver "Chubby" Young of Martinsville.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at McKee-Stone Funeral Chapel by Layman Gilmer Setliff. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The Rev. Harry 'Fed' Dalton
BASSETT - The Rev. Harry Federick "Fed" Dalton, 91, 115 Townsend Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born May 31, 1906, in Stuart, he was a son of Tyler Dalton and LeeAnna Roark Dalton.
He was married
to Lulie Merriman Dalton, who died in 1940. On Dec. 30, 1942, he was married
to Mary Foley Dalton, who survives.
He was a member of Collinsville Pentecostal Holiness Church.
He joined the Western North Carolina Conference of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in 1933 as a licensed minister. He served as a pastor in Stuart, Victor Hill, N.C., Endicott, Swansonville, North Henderson, N.C., Rocky Mount, Star, N.C., Hickory Grove, N.C., Mt. Calvary in Axton, and St. John in Hurt.
He retired from active pastorate in 1972.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Jane Roberts of Charlotte, N.C.; three sons, Harry F. Dalton Jr. of Martinsville, John Ezra Dalton of Bassett and Harold Dalton of Oklahoma City; a sister, Nannie Mays of Bassett; two brothers, Jesse Dalton and the Rev. H.M. Dalton, both of Bassett; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Annie Holt; three brothers, Frank, Howard and Vallie "Possum" Dalton; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., today at Collinsville Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Paul Ferguson, the Rev. Tommy McGhee, and the Rev. Ronald Smith. Burial will be in Mt. Hermon Church of the Brethren cemetery in Bassett.

Pearl Gill
Pearl Dix Gill, 83, formerly of 148 Wood Ave., died Wednesday morning, Nov. 5, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had been a patient for two years.
Born June 3, 1914, in Danville, she was the daughter of Walter Dix and Lucy Lawrence Dix.
She was married
to James Franklin Gill, who died Dec. 2, 1972.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was retired from Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church, Council of Aging, and Senior Citizens.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances G. Hawkins of Hopewell; a son, James Donald Gill of Fredricksburg; two brothers, James Dix of Ashboro, N.C., and George Dix of Ruffin, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Ralph E. McCormack. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her niece, Janet McCormack, 316 Raintree Road.
Adelbert Scearce
Adelbert Lee Scearce, 96, 252 West Woodlawn Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home since January 1991.
Born Feb. 9, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Treadway Logan Scearce and Emma Johns Scearce.
On Sept. 21, 1935, he was married
to Helen May Atkinson Scearce, who died March 3, 1994.
He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and later in Danville.
He was a retired tobacco farmer.
Survivors include three daughters, Rachel L. Scearce of Danville, Marie S. Turner of Lynchburg, and Juanita S. Almon of Greensboro, N.C.; a foster son, Jerry T. Stone of Danville; three grandchildren; two foster grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by the Rev. William C. Blalock and the Rev. Gerald Bridges. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Edna Bigelow
Edna Bigelow, 77, 409 Grant St. Extension, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Rocky Mount.
Born July 22, 1920, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Johnny and Mary Hodnett.
She was married
to John Bigelow, who predeceased her.
Survivors include four daughters, Gladys Ballard, Bernice Bigelow and Maxine Womack, all of Danville, and Elloise Jeffries of Roanoke; two sons, John Bigelow and James Hodnett, both of Danville; three brothers, Charlie Hodnett and Walter Hodnett, both of Danville, and John Hodnett Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday at the Chapel of Fisher & Watkins Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 338 Grant St., Apartment No. 7.
William 'Sam' Bradner III
William Samuel "Sam" Bradner III, 30, 769 Tunstall High School Road, died Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 5, 1997, on Golf Club Road as a result of an accident.
He was a Tunstall volunteer firefighter and was hauling water on a tanker to a fire scene.
Born Nov. 25, 1966, in Danville, he was a son of William S. Bradner Jr. and Virginia Boles Howell, who survive.
He attended Dan River High School, where he played football.
He was an active member of the Tunstall Volunteer Fire Department, and was of the Baptist faith.
He worked for the Made Rite Foods as a truck driver in Greensboro, N.C., for the past five years.
In addition to his mother of Greensboro, N.C., and his father of Blairs, survivors include a son, Cody Samuel Bradner of Keeling; a sister, Sabrina Murray of Chatham; a brother, Pete Howell of Randleman, N.C.; a half sister, Tammy H. Minor of Mebane, N.C.; a half-brother, Edward C. Hurd of Hampton; his maternal grandparents, Julius and Lelia Boles of Danville; his paternal great-grandmother, Collie Davis of Fayetteville, N.C.; and his stepmother, Lynda Bradner of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Carson Dalton. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
