Florence Powell
CHATHAM - Florence Parker English Powell, 86, 3664 Toshes Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997, at her residence.
Born Aug. 21, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charlie Parker and Mary Tuck Parker.
She was married
to Robert Clay English, who predeceased her. She later married
Russell Powell, who also predeceased her.
She was a member of Sandy Level Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Artis English and Curtis English, both of Chatham; two sisters, Alice Morton of Gretna and Eva Allen of Lynchburg; three grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Dr. Alvery Parr and the Rev. Bert Johnson. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Adelbert Scearce
Funeral services for Adelbert Lee Scearce, 96, 252 West Woodlawn Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by the Rev. William C. Blalock and the Rev. Gerald Bridges. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
He died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home since January 1991.
Born Feb. 9, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Treadway Logan Scearce and Emma Johns Scearce.
On Sept. 21, 1935, he was married
to Helen May Atkinson Scearce, who died March 9, 1994.
He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and later in Danville.
He was a retired tobacco farmer.
Survivors include three daughters, Rachel L. Scearce of Danville, Marie S. Turner of Lynchburg, and Juanita S. Almon of Greensboro, N.C.; a foster son, Jerry T. Stone of Danville; three grandchildren; two foster grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Jean Stahl
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Jean Krause Stahl, 65, died Monday, Nov. 3, 1997, in the City Hospital.
Born Nov. 10, 1931, in Chicago, she was a daughter of Maximilian Krause and Anna Boyce Krause.
She was married
to Thomas K. Stahl, who survives.
She was a retired teacher for the Danville, Va., public schools, and was a member of Mt. Zion Episcopal Church in Hedgesville.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Karl M. Stahl of Cudjoe Key, Fla.; a daughter, Kim Harris of Gordonsville, Va.; two brothers, Michael F. Krause of Marietta, Ga., and Gerald B. Krause of Plymouth, Mass.; two sisters, Kristine Kimble of Delton, Mich., and Mary Ellon Licht of Mt. Sterling, Ill.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Louise Taylor
Louise Matthews Taylor, 82, 1111 Main St., Stratford House, died at her residence.
Born April 14, 1915, in Randleman, N.C., she was a daughter of Walter Forrest Matthews and Sara Louise Fox Matthews.
She was married
to Joseph M. Taylor, who died Oct. 14, 1993.
She was raised in Randleman, N.C., and graduated from Women's College of North Carolina in Greensboro, N.C., in 1936.
In 1948, she moved to Danville, where for several years she taught in the Danville Public Schools and at Averett College.
She was active in the community as a member of First Presbyterian Church, The Speech and Hearing Center, the Wednesday Club and a number of community organizations.
Survivors include a daughter, Louise Taylor Libby of Danville; a sister, Sara Matthews Elliott of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn and the Rev. Elbert Williamson.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Evergreen Room at Stratford House.

Cassie Williams
Cassie Rakes Williams, 89, formerly of 811 Kemper Road, died Wednesday night, Nov. 5, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for the past five years.
Born July 17, 1908, in Patrick County, she was a daughter of Will Rakes and Judie Nolen Rakes.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was employed by Dan River Inc. for 48 years, retiring in July 1973.
She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mattie Rakes Powell and Lucy Rakes Booth, both of Danville; and a brother, Ed Rakes of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m., Saturday at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. David R. Turbyfill. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Lucy Booth, 501 Bell Drive.
Eva Goard
DRY FORK - Eva Dalton Goard, 87, 1388 Dry Fork Road, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997, at her residence.
Born Aug. 14, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William A. Dalton and Lillie Liggons Dalton.
She was married
to Willard Thomas "Bill" Goard, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
For many years, she and her husband operated the W.T. Goard Grocery in Dry Fork.
Survivors include two sons, Lanier Goard of Knoxville, Tenn., and Melvin Goard of Stroud, Okla.; three daughters, Evelyn Emerson of Chester and Marion Purnell and Brenda Adkins, both of Danville; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roger Collins and the Rev. Cecil Coates. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence.

Bishop Clarence Saunders
Bishop Clarence B. Saunders, 72, 631 Keister St., died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 19, 1925, in Danville, he was the son of Modell Saunders and Emma J. Saunders.
He was married
to Viola Womack Saunders, who predeceased him. He was later married
to Bobbie J. Saunders, who survives.
He was a bishop of Independent Church of God in Jamaica, N.Y., and was retired.
In addition to his wife, survivors include six daughters, Diane Sellars of Burlington, N.C., Betty Pinkard of New York, Barbara Adams of Staunton and Alfreda G. Webb, Susie Davis and Mildred Saunders, all of Danville; three sons, Harry Saunders of Baltimore and William Saunders and Tommie Saunders, both of Danville; 41 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Silver Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Booker George. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

JAVA - Agnes Robertson Stephens, 66, 12405 Halifax Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
Born May 31, 1931, she was a daughter of Harison Robertson and Judith Stephens Robertson.
She was married
to Willard Stephens, who predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Marion Stephens of the residence and Pamela Hairston of Danville; three sons, Sylvester Robertson and Willard Stephens Jr., both of Danville, and David Stephens of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Willie Robertson of Danville; four sisters, Evelyn Robertson of Danville, Thelma Robertson and Mary Francis Robertson, both of Atlantic City, N.J., and Elmus Robertson of Pleasantville, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. George H. Pass. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Evelyn Virginia Bacon
Evelyn Virginia Bacon, 82, 6275 Riverside Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 1997, at her home.
Born Oct. 6, 1915, she was married
to Layton P. Bacon Sr. for 35 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, DeMoss Forbes and Louise Custer Forbes; daughter, Phyllis W. Smith; and son, Layton P. "Buddy" Bacon Jr.
She is survived by daughters, Bonny B. Shelton and Beth B. Boles, both of Danville; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Fairview United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Edmonds, the Rev. Morris Bennett and the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Fairview United Methodist Church.
