Dorothy Smith
Dorothy Vaughn Smith, 77, 152 New St., died Monday, July 28, 1997, at her residence.
Born Dec. 11, 1919, in Danville, she was a daughter of George Vaughn and Clara Barksdale Vaughn.
She was married
to Ernest Smith, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Bibleway Worldwide Church, where she served in the senior missionary circle and senior usher board, and was a Sunday school teacher.
She was retired from Belk's Department Store.
Survivors include two daughters, Jewel S. Watson of Unionbell, N.Y., and Carolyn Smith of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Etta McCauley and Lois Vaughn, both of Danville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Bibleway Worldwide Church by Apostle Lawerence G. Campbell. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence.

Lila Stowe
Lila Burrell Stowe, 74, 115 Raintree Court, died Tuesday, July 29, 1997 at her residence.
Born Oct. 8, 1922, in Greenville County, S.C., she was a daughter of William Henry Burrell and Lillie Rollins Burrell.
For 53 years, she was married
to J. Howard Stowe, who died July 1, 1994.
She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and president of the women's ministry. She was a former choir member and a member of Aglow.
She was also a member of John W. Daniel Retirement Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Voncelle S. Arnn of Danville; two sisters, Lavonia Duncan of Taylors, S.C., and Florine Briley of Simpsonville, S.C.; three brothers, Aaron Burrell and Herman Burrell, both of Greenville, S.C., and Alton Burrell of Burlington, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe Beck and Dr. Kenneth Benson. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence.

Van Tucker
ROANOKE - Van R. Tucker of Biltmore Drive passed away Sunday, July 27, 1997, in a local hospital.
Mr. Tucker was a veteran of World War II, and retired from Red Line Trucking Company.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Morris Tucker; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary L. and Sandra C. Tucker of Danville; granddaughters, Laura Paige Tucker and Morgan Xin Tucker; sister, Mrs. Herbert (Mary Lewis) Harvey of Hampton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to North Roanoke Baptist Church, 6402 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, Va. 24019.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 1997, at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Chapel at 5160 Peters Creek Road by Dr. Rev. Darryl G. Crim. Interment
will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.
Stanley Carter
Stanley Irvin Carter, 85, formerly of Halifax County, died Wednesday morning, July 30, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where he had been a patient since 1995.
Born Aug. 14, 1911, in Halifax County, he was the son of Napoleon Carter and Julia Vernon Carter.
He was married
to Ada Ward Carter, who died in December 1973.
He was a farmer in the Sutherlin community, and a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, J. Paul Carter of Sutherlin, Randall W. Carter of Savannah, Ga., and Samuel I. Carter of Big Canoe, Jasper, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Carl Burger.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his son, J. Paul Carter, 1023 Hackman Trail, Sutherlin.
John Harris
John Howard Harris, 82, of 305 River Oak Drive, died Wednesday morning, July 30, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born on Dec. 23, 1914, in Eden, N.C., he was a son of Cicero Lee Harris and Mayme Hudgins Harris.
He was married
to Elizabeth Wortham Harris, who survives.
He attended public schools and the Air Force Administration School.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and was of the Christian faith.
He formerly owned and operated the Professional Credit Association in Bethesda, Md.
He is survived by his wife of the home.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Anthony Pollard and Dr. Lee Harris, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Leonard Isom Sr.
Leonard Samuel Isom Sr., 76, of 1149 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday morning, July 30, 1997, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C., where he has been a patient for one week.
Born April 27, 1921, in Danville, he was a son of Samuel David Isom and Levy Nevada Perdue Isom.
He was married
to Mildred Harris Isom, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a member of V.F.W. and Danville Elks Club. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 325, where he was in the Honor Guard.
For seven years, he was a manager of local Little League. He later managed the Stan Musial League.
He worked for Coca Cola Bottling Company, and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Leonard Samuel Isom Jr. of Teague, Texas, and Larry Gene Isom of East Lake, Ohio; three daughters, Linda Slaughter of Reidsville, N.C., and Pam Ray and Angela Hughes, both of Danville; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Wayne Crews, the Rev. Neal Isom and the Rev. Paul Ray. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

Helen Murphy
A graveside service for Helen Johnson Murphy, 78, 201 Rocklawn Ave., will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. David Murphy and the Rev. Fletcher Hardy.
She died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at her residence, following a year of declining health.
Born April 8, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Silas S. Johnson and Blanche Johnson.
She was married
to Carol E. Murphy, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville, and was a member of Zion Methodist Church.
She co-owned Murphy Furniture Company with her husband for 29 years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Phyllis M. Marston of South Boston; four sisters, Mary Shelhorse, Janie Farmer and Susie Talbott, all of Gretna, and Flossie Meadows of Danville; two brothers, Raymond Johnson and Richard Johnson, both of Gretna; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Cheryl Newton
Cheryl Ellen Campbell Newton, 42, of 1075 Halifax Road, died Wednesday, July 30, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following two years of declining health.
Born July 28, 1955, in Danville, she was a daughter of James L. Campbell Sr. and Keturah Gilbert Campbell, who survives.
She was married
to Kenneth Wayne Newton, who survives.
She spent her entire life in Danville, and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Misty Michelle Newton and Mary Catherine Newton, both of the residence; a stepson, Chris Wayne Newton of Danville; two sisters, Donna C. Allen of Richmond and Gayle C. Gravely of Ringgold; a brother, James L. Campbell Jr. of Pelham, N.C.; and a grandson.
The funeral arrangements are incomplete at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel.
The family is receiving friends at the 444 Chaney Store Road, Ringgold.
Lenora Slade
Lenora "Pig" Slade, 96, 111 Epps St., died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 20, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert and Bell Price Golden.
She was married
to George H. Slade Sr., who predeceased her.
She had worked at the former Dibrell Brothers Tobacco Co., and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, George H. Slade Jr. of Danville and Arthur Slade of Suitland, Md.; a daughter, Emma Howard of Capitol Heights, Md.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Douglas Wilson. Burial will be held in Oak Hill cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 4to 8 p.m. today at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
