Bernard Walton
Bernard Walton, 63, 113 Rosemary Lane, died Thursday, July 31, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 20, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Bubbie Walton and Josephine Clark Walton.
Survivors include seven sisters, Mary Lizzie Poole, Betty Sue Poole, Bertha Bigby, Annie L. Wilson and Beulah Hayes, all of Danville, Velma Wilson of Baltimore and Thelma Robertson of Central, S.C.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. Bobby Jones. Burial will be held in the Walton Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Beulah Hayes, 635 Upper St., Danville.
Bessie Cook
Bessie Castle Cook, 74, 1121 Lockett Drive, died Thursday, July 31, 1997, at her residence.
The daughter of Floyd Earl Castle and Haver Poff Castle, she was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Schoolfield.
She was married
to Ollie Clifton Cook, who died May 16, 1995.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Gould of Chesterfield; a brother, Floyd Earl Castle of Danville; two sisters, Mildred Finch of Blairs and Margaret Neal of Concord, N.C.; two grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Mount View cemetery by Daryl Joyce.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Rose "Rosie" Daniel
CHATHAM - Rose "Rosie" Ann Daniel, 84, 301 Climax Road, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 1997, at her residence.
The daughter of George Washington Daniel and Susie Hutcherson Daniel, she was born Aug. 1, 1913, in Pittsylvania County.
She was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.
She is survived by three sisters, Georgie Moore and Gladys Daniel, both of Chatham, and Madie Cook of Gretna.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Minnie Parker, Mary Daniel and Eaddie Daniel; and a brother, Sam Daniel.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday from Chatham Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. James C. Abner.
Interment will be at the Daniel Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Scott Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Charlie Harris
BRONX, N.Y. - Charlie L. Harris, 55, of Bronx, died Wednesday, July 27, 1997.
The son of Charlie E. Harris and Lillian H. Harris, who survives, he was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Danville, Va.
He was married
to Helene Holt Harris, who survives.
He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service.
In addition to his mother of Danville and wife of Bronx, he is survived by one brother, George E. Harris of Queens; and two sisters, Vivian H. Terry of New York City and Bessie H. Watlington of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from James Street United Holiness Church in Danville by the Rev. A.L. Saunders.
Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The body may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 173 White St.
Harry Manuel
Harry Thomas Manuel, 77, 24 Robin Ridge Road, Rocky Mount, died Friday, Aug. 1, 1997, at the residence of his son, Kenneth Manuel, 507 Bell Drive, after a decline in health of eight months.
The son of Maggie Hooker Manuel, who survives, and Cliff Manuel, he was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Leaksville, N.C.
He was married
to Margaret Murphy Manuel, who died in 1982. He later married
Rachel Purgason Manuel, who survives.
He was a verteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.
He spend most of his life in Danville where he worked for Dan River Inc. as a loom fixer before retiring in 1985.
He lived in Rocky Mount for the past eight years and was of the Primitive Baptist Faith.
In addition to his mother of Eden, N.C., and his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Joel T. Manuel and Kenneth D. Manuel, both of Danville, and Mark A. Manuel of Cascade; one stepson, Marcus S. Lawrance III of Tazewell; one brother, Odell Manuel of Eden; three sisters, Odes Thompson, Emma Lee Pulliam and Pearl Coleman, all of Eden; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Kenneth Hopkins and Elder J.M. Newborn.
Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-8 tonight and other times at the residence of his son, Kenneth D. Manuel.
Florence Price
Florence Alcorn Price, 125 Arnett Blvd., Apt. C-7, died Aug. 2, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
The daughter of William Alfred Alcorn and Mollie Ellington Alcorn, she was born in Rockingham City, N.C.
She was married
to Joseph Walter Price, who died June 24, 1962.
She lived her life in the Rockingham City and Danville areas. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a bookkeeper for Grogan Oil Co.
She was a member of Mosley United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school treasurer. She was also a member of Ladies Circle #5 of Mosley United Methodist Church.
She was a past member of the Danville Business and Professional Women's Club.
She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday from the chapel of Mosley United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends at the home of Charlie and Virginia Smith, 140 Alpine Drive.

Eva Thornton
Eva Mae Thornton, 90, 724 Cross Stitch Road, Dry Fork, died Friday, Aug. 1, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
The daughter of Whittie and Susie Bowe Thornton, she was born March 9, 1907, in Pittsylvania County.
She was married
to Page Thornton, who predeceased her.
She was a farmer.
She was a member of Sharon Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Frank Inge of the residence and Romey Inge of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Frances I. Rouse of Capitol Heights, Md.; a brother, Romey Thornton of Glassboro, N.J.; two sisters, Elizabeth Fuller of Martinsville and Bessie Waller of Washington, D.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Sharon Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald D. Clarke. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

Rebecca Echols
Rebecca Diane Echols, 57, of 329 Wagner St., died Monday morning, Aug. 4, 1997, at her home.
Born March 6, 1940, she was the daughter of Winifred Carter of Chatham and Mack Carter Sr.
She was a homemaker and a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Noble M. Echols of the residence; two sons, the Rev. Terry W. Echols of Danville and Ivan K. Echols of the residence; a daughter, Lathalia Y. Echols of Alexandria; a sister, the Rev. Mae Coles of Chatham; three brothers, Mack Carter Jr. of Chatham, Carrol E. Carter of Dover, Del. and James W. Carter of Richmond.
She was predeceased by her son, Maynard McCarthy Echols; her father; and a brother, Lanier P. Carter.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. H.G. McGhee Sr. Internment will follow at Highland Burial Park in Danville.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Vance Street Baptist Church.

Edith Chapman
Edith Oakes Chapman, 80, formerly of Canterbury Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a year's decline in health.
Born Feb. 24, 1917, she was the daughter of Arthur Oakes and Annie Fowlkes Oakes.
She was married
to Dewey N. Chapman, who died Oct. 17, 1964.
Chapman had lived all of her life in Danville, where she had worked for King Anderson Builders and then Kemp Miller Building, where she retired as secretary and bookkeeper.
She was a graduate of Callands High School in Pittsylvania County and was a member of the former Grace United Methodist Church and a present member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
She was also a member of the Danville Garden Club, the Danville Pilot Luncheon Club, and the Kaufman-Brydon No. 87 Order of the Eastern Star, where she had served as Worthy Matron along with other various offices.
Survivors include her sisters, Margaret Oakes Parry of Jackson, Ohio; Callie Oakes McAdams of Fredrick, Md.; and Jean Oakes Murray of Greensboro, N.C.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Roy W. Oakes, Robert H. Oakes and B.F. Oakes.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Richard E. Cobb. Internment will follow in Highland Burial Park, with rites conducted by the Kaufman-Brydon No. 87 Order of the Eastern Star.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
