Michael Fitzgerald
Michael Kevin Fitzgerald, 35, of 698 Cabell St., died Sunday, Aug. 3, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 27, 1962, in Danville, he was the son of the late James Fitzgerald and Pauline Clark Fitzgerald.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary Lee Fitzgerald, Mary Francis Fitzgerald, and Tammy Fitzgerald, all of Danville; and five brothers, Ronald Fitzgerald, Donald Fitzgerald, Cassell Fitzgerald, Robert Fitzgerald and William Fitzgerald, all of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by Bishop Major Hairston. Internment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends today at the residence from noon-8 p.m.
Mary Mattox
Mary Mays Sorrells Mattox, 62, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1997, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late George Lewis Mays and Dora Hudson Mays.
Mattox was a member of Memorial Christian Church.
She was the widow of Raymond Earl Sorrells Jr.
Survivors include a son, Stephen R. Sorrells of Forest; one daughter, Rhodna Mattox of Lynchburg; one brother, Curtis B. Mays of Lynchburg; two sisters, Ruth M. Campbell of Lynchburg and Nancy M. Gallaher of Ringgold; and nine grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon Friday by the Rev. Virgil Knipp at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel in Lynchburg, and at other times at the residence of her son, 302 Hunters Creek Road, Forest.
Lillian Mauer
The funeral for Lillian Walker Mauer, 77, of 145 Grove Park Circle, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Robert Kerr. Burial will follow in Locust Hill United Methodist Church cemetery.
She died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1997, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Born Sept. 20, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Ola Siddle Walker and the late Edward William Walker.
She grew up in Milton, N.C. and was a long time resident of Cawell County. She attended Elon College and was a former member of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs.
In addition to her husband, Homer Charles Mauer, survivors include, a son, Kelly Mauer of Danville; a daughter, Tia Davis of Columbia, S.C.; a brother, Steven Edward Walker of Reidsville, N.C.; and a half-brother, Chandler Walker of Texas.
The family will be at the residence.
Veronica Bowen Miller
Julie Veronica Bowen Miller, 23, of 1140 Cloverdale Trail, Sutherlin, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 5, 1974, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Larry Dean Bowen and Barbara Burgess Ellis.
On Oct. 5, 1996, she was married
to Larry Miller Jr., who survives.
She attended Danville Community College and Virginia Western. She was a lifeguard at the YWCA, and an aquatics instructor at the YMCA.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by two half-brothers, Raymond Ware and Daniel Ellis; paternal grandparents, Mabel S. and Aubrey Bowen of Virgilina; and her maternal grandmother, Giselle Evans of Houston, Texas.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at the Miller Family cemetery at Cloverdale Quarters on U.S. Route 58 by the Rev. Robert Martin.
The family will receive friends at 1120 Cloverdale Trail, Cloverdale Quarters, U.S. Route 58.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Gordon Myers
GRETNA - Collian Gordon Myers, 53, died Monday, Aug. 4, 1997.
Born Jan. 25, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ethel Hammock Myers and Collian Myers.
He was a bulldozer operator.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Dalton Myers of Gretna; three daughters, Elizabeth Sue Myers, Wanda Mae Myers Rice and Janet Arlene Myers Doss, all of Gretna; three sisters, Ruth Wyatt of Martinsville, Lois M. Irby and Doris Conner, both of Gretna; and five grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at the Myers Family cemetery by the Rev. Albert Moser and the Rev. Jerry Blevins.
The family will be at the residence of his mother, 189 Burke Road, Gretna.
Catherine Reeves
The funeral for Catherine Goble Reeves, 68, of 300 Blue Ridge St., Martinsville, will be held 2 p.m. today at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Don Reynolds. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
She died Monday, Aug. 4, 1997, in Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center.
Born Nov. 15, 1928, in Danville, she was the daughter of Mary S. Goble Williams and James C. Goble Sr.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Reeves, her parents, and her brother, James Conley Goble Jr.
She was a housewife.
Survivors include a daughter, Nyoloa Shearin of Martinsville; and three sons, Dennis Reeves of Jonesville, N.C., Jerry Reeves of Fieldale and Monte Reeves of Bassett.
Jane Rogers
GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Jane Dalton Rogers, 64, of Glen Burnie, died on July 25, 1997, at her home after a brief illness.
Born April 16, 1933, in Martinsville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Sam Dalton and Beatrice McDaniel Dalton.
She worked as a quality control supervisor for Martin, Marietta and Gould for 13 years until she retired in 1994. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Shankle, and her second husband, James J. Rogers.
Survivors include a son, two daughters, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Jewel Thompson of Glen Burnie, and Peggy Schroeder of Baltimore; and one brother, Douglas Dalton of Danville, Va.
The funeral was held July 29, 1997, at Singletons Funeral Home in Glen Burnie. Burial was in Glen Haven Memorial Park.
Sadie Still
The funeral for Sadie Strader Still, 81, of 129 Bromley Drive, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Woodlawn Baptist Church by the Rev. William C. Blalock. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
She died Tuesday morning, Aug. 5, 1997, at her residence after a short illness and a year's decline in health.
Born May 22, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Johnie Strader and Jettie Gammon Strader.
She was married
to James Russell Still on May 6, 1939.
She was predeceased by a brother, William Strader. She made her home in the Danville area for 40 years, where she was a cloth inspector for Dan River Inc. for 43 years before retiring.
She was a charter member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday school class; she also worked in the nursery and helped with Bible school.
In addition to her husband, of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Linda Chapin of LaGrange, Ohio; a son, Russell E. Still of the residence; seven sisters, Laura Still, Pearl Miller, Lila Moss, Bessie Reynolds, and Beulah Strader, all of Danville, Bertha Eller of St. Louis, and Louise Strader of Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Fred Warren Jr.
On Aug. 5, 1997, our beloved daddy, Fred S. "Shorty" Warren Jr., of 839 Edmonds St., went on to heaven to be with the Lord and our beloved mother. He had been in declining health for five years.
Mr. Warren was born in Danville on Jan. 3, 1921, a son of the late Fred S. Warren Sr. and Stella May Higgins Warren.
Mr. Warren was predeceased by his wife, Hazel Worley Warren, who died Feb. 24, 1997, and they were married
on Dec. 26, 1941.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn W. Smith, who died in July 1996, and also predeceased by two brothers, J.C. Shropshire and Dillard Warren; and predeceased by two sisters, Mable Clayton and Estella Woodson.
Mr. Warren was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He had spent most of his life living on Edmonds Street in Danville. He retired early on disability from Dan River, Inc., after 30 years of service. He was a member of the VFW and of the Holiness Faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda W. Carpenter of Robbinsville, North Carolina, and Sylvia W. Pruitt of Ruffin, North Carolina; and two sisters, Thelma Parrott of Haw River, North Carolina, and Lorine Lester of Lackawaxen, Pa.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren also survive.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Hubert Inman. Military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Garnett Hutcherson
Garnett Eldridge Hutcherson, 64, 16 Oak Ridge Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.
Born May 25, 1933, in Danville, he was the son of Hessie Burnett Hutcherson and George Edward Hutcherson.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He had lived in Danville during his early years, then moved to Michigan for 20 years and North Carolina for 14 years before returning to Danville in 1987.
He had graduated from Dan River High School in 1951 and worked as a manufacturing engineer until retirement.
He was married
to Mattie "Lou" Wyatt Hutcherson on Aug. 4, 1953.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include one son, Marcus H. Hutcherson of Danville; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, James E. Hutcherson.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Daniel Lackey. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will be at the residence.
