William 'Willie' Rigney
William "Willie" Rigney, 75, 4125 Still Meadow Road, Axton, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997, at Stratford Health Center where he had resided since May.
Born May 10, 1922, in Callands, he was the son of William R. Rigney and Josephine Rigney Rigney.
He spent most of his life in the Callands community where he was a farmer and a logger before retiring in 1993.
He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include a son, John William Rigney of Axton; and a brother, Percy Isia Rigney of Chatham.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeffrey Lee Cannon. Interment
will follow at the Rigney Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mary Paul, 4008 Brookside Road, Axton.
Ruth Scruggs
V. Ruth Scruggs, 74, 117 Schoolfield Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997 at her residence.
Born Aug. 17, 1922, in Gretna, she was the daughter of Charles Bruce Irby and Jenny Foat Huffman Irby.
She was married
to Raleigh Edward Scruggs, who predeceased her.
She spent much of her life in Gretna and made her home in Danville for more than 20 years.
She was employed by Dan River Inc. for 36 years before retiring.
She was of the Baptist Faith.
Survived include a sister, Thelma Irby Shelton of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. L. Kermit Law. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will be at the residence and at the residence of her nephew, Mike Shelton, 113 Schoolfield Drive.
Ethel Shelton
HURT - Ethel "Dootsie" Farris Shelton, 72, 2105 Izaak Walton Road, Hurt, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Dec. 23, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter N. Farris and Jennie Dalton Farris.
She was married
to Jerry T. Shelton, who survives.
She was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two sons, Jesse Keatts of Hurt and Timmy Shelton of Gretna; three daughters, Patsy K. Mitchell of Lynch Station, Glenda K. Williamson of Gretna and Kathy Shelton of Hurt; a sister, Bessie F. Simpson of Gretna; a brother, Walter Faris of Gretna; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. John Muth, the Rev. Lenn E. Lloyd and the Rev. Obie Harward. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Sadie Fowlkes
RICHMOND - Sadie Barbour Fowlkes, 92, Libbie Conn Convalesent Center, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at her residence.
Born April 22, 1905, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Wiley Augustus Barbour and Claudia Anne Murrell Barbour.
She was a member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church.
Her husband was Holland B. Fowlkes Sr., who predeceased her.
She worked in the sewing room at Dan River Inc.
Survivors include three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, H.B. Fowlkes Jr.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Ronald Mateer.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home.
Ethel Lovelace
HURT - Ethel Walden Lovelace, 69, 4401 Shula Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born July 28, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Billy Walden and Pattie Waller Walden.
She was married
to Joe K. Lovelace, who survives.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Brown of Hurt; a son, Kenneth Lovelace of Hurt; four sisters, Margaret Crews, Elsie Clements, Dorothy Glass and Mildred Lovelace, all of Hurt; two brothers, Evan Walden of Altavista and Willie Henry Walden Sr. of Baton Rouge, La.; four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, John Walden and Jessie Walden.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Jimmie Tarpley. Burial will be held in Mt. Olive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends after the burial service at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, and other times at the residence of her son, Kenneth Lovelace, 1000 Delta Drive in Hurt.
David Postell
GRETNA - David Nathaniel Postell, 58, 604 Colonial Ridge, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, at his residence.
Born Sept. 24, 1938, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of L.C. Postell and Neslyn Simpson Postell.
He was married
to Gunnie C. Postell, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was a self-employed truck driver.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, David N. Postell Jr. of Denver, Danny Postell of Jamaica, N.Y., and Andre Crews of Lynchburg; seven daughters, Diane Postell of Sacramento, Calif., and Michelle Green, Denise Galbreath, Vera Spencer and Kimberly Postell, all of Denver, Renae Postell of Gretna and Anita Crews of Danville; two stepdaughters, Louise Hunt of Hurt and Laura Brown of Chatham; a stepson, Anthony Crews of Hurt; a sister, Cora Griswald of Aiken, S.C.; and 14 grandcildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Rosa Hill Baptist Church in Wagener, S.C., by the Rev. W. Simmons. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, and other times at the residence.
Sarah Smith
Sarah W. Smith, 78, 115 Ayers Street, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 10, 1919, in Gaffney, S.C., she was a daughter of Lavender Whitmire and Victoria Dawkins Whitmire.
She was married
to Rutherford Smith, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she served in the crowning chorus, missionary successful tent no. 143, and was a deaconess.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include four sons, Otis L. Smith, James R. Smith, Bobby Smith and Ernest Smith, all of Danville; two daughters, Marie S. Johnson and Carolyn A. Smith, both of Danville; a brother, Clinton Gregory of Union, S.C.; a sister, Mattie Allen of Spartanburg, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth. Burial will be held in Oak Hill cemetery.
The remains may be viewed 4-8 Wednesday evening at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Jason Brandon Sr.
ALTON - Jason Robert Brandon Sr., 51, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at his residence.
Born Feb. 20, 1946, in Halifax County, he was a son of Cleveland Brandon and Isabella Brandon.
He was married
to Delores Ann Brandon, who survives.
He was a member of the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Jason Robert Brandon Jr. and James Allan Brandon, both of the residence; two sisters, Odessa Chavious of Alton and Eliza Frooks of Baltimore; and three brothers, Otis Brandon of New York, Cleveland Brandon Jr. of Connecticut and Dean Brandon of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church by Dr. H.R. Surgeon. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
The remains may be viewed 12-8 today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, N.C.

Doris Davis
Doris Marie Davis, 73, 49 Morris Ave., died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at her residence following several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 31, 1923, in Danville, she was the daughter of Jack Brightwell and Edna Brightwell.
She lived in Virginia Beach before moving back to Danville 12 years ago.
She was a homemaker and a member of Day Spring Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher.
She was a member of the Virginia Beach Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
She was married
to Richard Davis, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a daughter, Audrey D. Geras of Virginia Beach; and a son, Richard Davis Jr. of Ventura, Calif.
