Bettie Smith
Bettie Lewis Anderson Smith, 56, 171 Banner St., died Monday evening, Aug. 11, 1997 at her residence.
Born May 8, 1941, in Chatham, she was the daughter of Lynwood Dodson and Minnie Manning Lewis Dodson, who survives.
She was married
to James E. Anderson, who died in 1975. She was later married
to Darryl Edward Smith, who survives.
She was employed at Dan River Inc. for 27 years.
She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her mother of Danville and her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Starlette A. Hodges of Providence, N.C.; three sons, Timothy J. Anderson of Cascade, Jerry A. Anderson of Dry Fork and Terry L. Anderson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three brothers, Alex Lewis and Roger Lewis, both of Danville, and Wayne Dodson of Pelham, N.C.; and three grandchildren
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Rufus Butner and the Rev. Dean Lamphere. Burial will be held in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 216 Park Springs Road in Providence, N.C.
William Baker
William Keith Baker, 80, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 12, 1997, at his home.
He served 20 years in the Army and National Guard, and served in Germany during World War II. He retired from Dan River Mills in 1980.
He was a member of River Oak Church of God.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Greene Baker; two daughters, Sandra Baker Lampl of Naples, Fla., and Sue Baker Franklin of Danville; and a son, Richard Keith Baker of San Diego; and two grandsons, Christopher Foster of Virginia Beach and Brian Baker of San Diego.
Graveside services will be held on Friday from Highland Burial Park at 11:00 a.m. by the Rev. Tim Nickols.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-8:30 at Townes Funeral Home.

Doris Davis
Doris Marie Davis, 73, 49 Morris Ave., died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at her residence following several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 10, 1923, in Danville, she was the daughter of Jack Brightwell and Edna Brightwell.
She lived in Virginia Beach before moving back to Danville 12 years ago.
She was a homemaker and a member of Day Spring Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher.
She was a member of the Virginia Beach Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
She was married
to Richard Davis, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a daughter, Audrey D. Geras of Virginia Beach; and a son, Richard Davis of Ventura, Calif.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Day Spring Baptist Church on Morris Ave. by the Rev. Calvin Hines.

Dorothy McCoy
EVERETT, Wash. - Dorothy Worsham McCoy, 74, of 932 Hoyt St., died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997, at her residence after a two year decline in health.
Born May 20, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Zebedee Worsham Sr. and Lottie Shelton Worsham.
She was married
to Robert McCoy, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Robert McCoy II of Everett; two sisters, Pearline W. Shelton of Danville and Hilda W. Parker of Danville; two
brothers, Martin Worsham of Dry Fork and Chief Master Sgt. Zebedee Worsham Jr. of Hampton; and two grandsons.
She was predeceased by a brother, Odell Worsham.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Open Bible Baptist Church by the Rev. Dean Lamphere.
Victor Motley Jr.
CHESAPEAKE - Victor Douglas Motley Jr., 79, of 501 New Zealand Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at Norfolk General Hospital.
Born May 12, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Victor Douglas Motley and Irene Pickral Motley.
He was married
to Ann Clark Motley, who survives.
He was a member of Sheva Church of Christ.
He was a retired aircraft mechanic at the Norfolk Naval Air Station.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy during five major battles in the South West Pacific.
He was a life member of National Rifle Association.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Stuart Douglas Motley and Victor Hunter Motley, both of Chesapeake; a sister, Elise Motley Allen of Chatham; and a brother, Aubrey D. Motley of Madison Heights.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Diane Kay Motley; and a brother, Vernon L. Motley.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham by the Rev. David McGuire. Interment
will be held in Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his sister, 231 S. Main St., Chatham.
Rev. Thomas Ninnis
Rev. Thomas J. Ninnis, 67, of 907 Colquhoun St., died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born Jan. 17, 1930, in Serifos Cyclades, Greece.
He was the priest of Saint Peters Greek Orthodox for 17 years, and had served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include a brother, Savos Ninnis of Greece; and a sister, Margarita Chryssolora of Greece.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Townes Funeral Home.
Nelsie Taylor
CHATHAM - Nelsie Dodson Taylor, 82, of 1972 Fairview North, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 13, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 3, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Roy W. Dodson and Myrtle W. Owen Dodson.
She was married
to William Howard Taylor, who died Feb. 1, 1978.
She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith Crowder Rudacille of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Pattie D. Clark of Glen Bernie, Md., and Mary D. Marshall of Crownsville, Md., and Cecile D. Blair of Danville and Billie D. Myers of South Boston; four brothers, Buster B. Dodson of Rocky Mount, James Mitchell Dodson of Semora, N.C., and Glen G. Dodson and Vernon D. Dodson, both of Yanceyville, N.C.; and one grandchild.
In addition to his husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Alexander Dodson, Newman O. Dodson and Roger W. Dodson.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Macon. Interment
wil be held in Highland Burial Park.

Josephine Trent
Josephine Bernice A. Trent, 68, 2946 Westover Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at Gretna Health Care Center, where she had been a resident since July 25, 1997. She had been in declining health for five years.
Born Aug. 11, 1929, in Richmond, she was a daughter of Lawrence Lee Seamster and Mattie Sue Seamster.
She was married
to Walter H. Trent Sr., who died in Sept. 1990.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area, where she was a retired spinner for Dan River, Inc.
She attended Gethsemane Weslan Church.
Survivors include five sons, Walter E. Trent and George E. Trent, both of Keens Mountain, N.C., and John H. Trent of Fieldale and Richard G. Trent and Walter H. Trent Jr., both of Dry Fork; two daughters, Joan C. Shelton and Josephine "Joann" Easome, both of Danville; 25 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley Singleton Tate.
A memorial service will be conducted 4 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David Wilson. Entombment will be at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Melba Brummitt
Melba Jean Lewis Brummitt, 600 Main St., Apt. 509, died Aug. 13, 1997, at her residence.
Born in Danville, she was a daughter of Edward Randolf Lewis and Nina Ethel Stewart Lewis.
She was a member of Christians United Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Janice Marie Ashby of Schroon, N.Y., and Evelyn Fox of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a brother, William R. Lewis of Danville.
Friends are invited to the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday at Christians United Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Hill. Visitations will be before the service and preceding the 2 p.m. funeral service.
Interment will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the residence of her brother, 291 Luna Lake Road.
