Jewel Justice
Jewel Epps Justice, 84, formerly of 85 Fairfield Ave., died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, at the Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident of Riverside Health Care Center for three years.
Born Aug. 5, 1913, in Lincolnton, N.C., she was a daughter of Robert G. Epps and Mary Heffinger Epps.
She was married
to Robert McGinnis, who predeceased her, and then to Zeb Justice, who also predeceased her.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Inc. in the inspection department before retiring.
She was of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include two sons; Bobby McGinnis of Danville and Larry Justice of Miami, Fla.; a daughter, Vickye Farlow of Danville; a sister, Effie Lumpkin of Ruffin, N.C.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted Tuesday 2 p.m. at the Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jack Robertson.
The family will receive friends at the home of Jimmy and Vickye Farlow, 1600 Franklin Turnpike.

Reggie "Elva" Meadows
DRY FORK - Reggie "Elva" Meadors Meadows, 90, formerly of 216 Daniel Lane, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center, where she had been a patient for three years.
Born Jan. 23, 1907, in Danville, she was the daughter of Reginald S. Meadors and Virginia Agnes Ferguson Meadors.
She spent most of her life in the Dry Fork community, and was retired from Dan River Inc.
She was married
to Oscar Franklin Meadows, who predeceased her.
She was of the Holiness faith, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Several nieces and nephews survive.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Harry Meadows.
The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Margaret Gupton, 276 Daniel Lane, off Dry Fork Road.

Lucille Mumpower
Lucille Mary Wilkins Mumpower, 80, formerly of Danville, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at her residence in Augusta, Ga.
Born June 7, 1917, in Danville, she was a daughter of Rufus W. Wilkins and Hattie Hundley Wilkins.
She was married
to William Arvin Mumpower, who predeceased her.
She lived in Danville most of her life before moving to Augusta in 1992. She was retired from Dan River Inc.
She was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Augusta.
Survivors include two sons; William A. Mumpower Jr. of Calhoun, Ga., and Daniel S. Mumpower of Augusta; a daughter, Linda S. Roe of Houston; a sister, Mae Anast of Wilmington, N.C.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. View cemetery by the Rev. Ralph E. McCormack.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
John Overstreet
John Gilliam Overstreet, 55, of Java, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at his residence.
Born Nov. 22, 1941, in Bedford County, he was a son of Wesley Gilliam Overstreet and Virgie Camay Jenkins.
He is survived by five brothers, Jessie H. Overstreet, Oten J. Overstreet, James L. Overstreet, Edward L. Overstreet and Wesley W. Overstreet, all of Bedford; three sisters, Mary Hensley and Sandra F. Butler, both of Bedford, and Betty A. Oliviera of Taunton, Mass.
A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday in Greenwood cemetery by the Rev. Jeffrey Werner Clemmens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. tonight at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.
Allen Rodenhizer
Casper Allen Rodenhizer, 65, of 325 Gemstone Lane, died suddenly Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, in Rockingham County, N.C.
Born Sept. 5, 1931, in Madison Heights, he was the son of Guy Allen Rodenhizer and Evelyn Adams Kirby.
On May 9, 1959, he was married
to Peggy Chesson Rodenhizer, who survives.
Mr. Rodenhizer lived most of his life in Danville. He had driven for the former Virginia-Carolina Trucking Company prior to joining E&M Trucking Company, where he drove until his retirement.
Mr. Rodenhizer was a member of the North Main Baptist Church, but he had been attending the Sharon Baptist Church.
He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Deane Rodenhizer of Danville; a sister, Betty W. Adkins of Danville; three nieces, Pikie Smith of Chatham, Susan Watkins and Adrea Randall, both of Danville; two great-nephews, Joshua Rodgers of Chatham, and Gage Randall of Danville.
He was predeceased by his father, mother, and stepmother, Julia Rodenhizer.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Allen Holder. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight 7:30-8:30 at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence, 325 Gemstone Lane off Route 58 West.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew Inc., 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Virginia 24541.
Howard Banks
CHATHAM - Howard George Banks, 86, 437 Mill Creek Road, died Sunday morning, Aug. 17, 1997, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
Born Aug. 23, 1910, in Halifax County, he was the son of James Banks and Lizzie McNorton Banks.
He was married
to Fannie Sutherlin Banks, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
After 42 years of service as a barber, he retired from The Modern Barber Shop in Chatham .
He was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church, where he served as past chairman of the board of deacons and the board of trustees and past church treasurer for 40 years.
He also was a past church school teacher of the senior class for many years and past church sexton for 10 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Joyce Spencer of Danville; five sisters, Lucille Solomon, Reba Banks and Lenna Donnell, all of Chatham, Roberta Vaughn of Baltimore, and Helena Murray of White Plains, N.Y.; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Cherrystone Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd Jones. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

Virginia Boswell
Virginia Frances Boswell, 75, of 210 Arlington Place, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, in Franklin County Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health for a year.
Born Oct. 4, 1921, in the Hinesville community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Claude Swanson Hines Sr. and Eva Hutcherson Hines.
She was married
to Harold Kesler Boswell, who died April 28, 1978.
Mrs. Boswell lived most of her life in the Axton community prior to moving to Danville. She was retired from the Henry County Public School System with over 30 years of service where she had worked as a school bus driver and in the cafeteria.
She was a lifetime member of Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara B. Dameron of Martinsville and Debra B. Jones of Danville; two sons, Ronald W. Boswell of Lincolnton, N.C., and C. Donald Boswell of Danville; two sisters, Kathleen H. Barker and Amanda H. Ferguson, both of Danville; two grandsons, Donnie Boswell and Ronnie Boswell, both of Danville; two granddaughters, Donna B. Moore and Angie B. Wolff, both of Danville; two great-grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
She was predeceased by a brother, Claude Swanson Hines Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 tonight from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Calvin Hines and the Rev. Jack Robertson.
A graveside service will follow Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of her son, Donald Boswell, 2133 Stoney Mill off of Route 58 West.

Mildred Groff
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mildred Wilkerson Groff, 89, 1759 Church St. Northwest, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, at Villia-Rosa Nursing Home in Mitcheville, Md. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born June 24, 1908, in the Keeling community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Major Wilkerson and Delia Turner Wilkerson.
On Sept. 28, 1926, she was married
to William Irving Groff Sr., who predeceased her.
A resident of Pittsylvania County until 1944, she moved to the Washington, D.C., area, where she was retired from real estates sales.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., and a volunteer with senior citizen organizations in the Washington, D.C., area.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann G. Paschall of Adelphi, Md.; a sister, Evelyn W. Wiles of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, William Irving Groff Jr.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Herman C. Absher. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
