Ada Allen
CHATHAM - Ada Shelton Allen, 95, of Walkers Well Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997, at Gretna Health Care Center. She had been a resident for the past five years.
Born June 9, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George William Shelton and Lila Hudson Shelton.
She was married
to Harry Edward Allen, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Greenpond Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school.
Survivors include two sons, Edward S. Allen of Roanoke and Mike S. Allen of Chatham; two daughters, Alice A. Floyd of Rougemont, N.C., and Nancy A. Meadows of Chatham; a sister, Georgie S. Rucker of Bowling Green; a brother, George W. Shelton of Bowling Green; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John McCray and the Rev. A. Kyle Flora. Interment
will be held in Chatham Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of Hunt and Nancy Meadows, 121 Whittle St., Chatham.
Irene Anast
FRANKLIN SQUARE, N.Y. - Irene Stone Anast, of 841 First Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at Franklin Hospital Medical Center.
Born Dec. 1, 1901, in Reidsville, N.C., she was the daughter of John Stone and Bessie Lee Cox Stone.
A former employee of Dan River Inc., she had been a resident of New York for a number of years.
Survivors include a daughter, Marie A. Eldridge of Franklin Square; a son, Charlie Anast of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, Jett Stone of Danville, Va.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Ralph McCormack.
The family will receive friends 1:30-2:30 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home.
Howard Banks
CHATHAM - Howard George Banks, 86, 437 Mill Creek Road, died Sunday morning, Aug. 17, 1997, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
Born Aug. 23, 1910, in Halifax County, he was the son of James Banks and Lizzie McNorton Banks.
He was married
to Fannie Sutherlin Banks, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
After 42 years of service as a barber, he retired from The Modern Barber Shop in Chatham .
He was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church, where he served as past chairman of the board of deacons and the board of trustees and past church treasurer for 40 years.
He also was a past church school teacher of the senior class for many years and past church sexton for 10 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Joyce Spencer of Danville; five sisters, Lucille Solomon, Reba Banks and Lenna Donnell, all of Chatham, Roberta Vaughn of Baltimore, and Helena Murray of White Plains, N.Y.; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Cherrystone Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd Jones. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

Earl Craig Sr.
Earl Thomas Craig Sr., 52, 1069 Ridgecrest Drive, died Monday, Aug. 18, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following five years of declining health.
Born March 3, 1945, in Danville, he was a son of James T. Craig and Lena Hall Craig.
On Nov. 5, 1965, he was married
to Gloria Reynolds Craig, who survives.
A life long resident of Danville, he was retired from Corning Glass.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Earl Thomas Craig Jr. and Toby Wayne Craig, both of Danville, and Anthony Scott Craig (Hospital Corpsman First Class, U.S. Navy) of Savannah, Ga.; two sisters, Geraldine C. Adams of Portsmouth and Maxine C. Whitt of Danville; a brother, Richard Craig of Danville; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, James Conrad Craig.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber. Burial will be held in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Letcher Jefferson
CHATHAM - Letcher Hubbard Jefferson, 67, 214 Crossbow Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997, at his residence.
Born Feb. 12, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Montie H. Jefferson and Doris Robertson Jefferson.
He was married
to Wyona Cook Jefferson, who survives.
He was a member and elder of Liberty Christian Church, where he was a former chairman of the board.
He was a retired employee of Klopman.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Michael Letcher Jefferson of Chatham and Gary Wayne Jefferson of Altavista; three daughters, Betty A. Jefferson of Chatham, Doris J. Blair of Gretna and Debbie L. Jefferson of Danville; three brothers, John E. Jefferson of Sandy Level, Grover Winifred Jefferson of Wirtz and Darrell W. Jefferson of Penhook; two sisters, Inis J. Towler and Linda J. Brumfield, both of Gretna; and four grandchildren and a step-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Jenell Jefferson.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Liberty Christian Church by the Rev. Wayne Grinnell. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

Paul Wright
Paul W. Wright, 84, of 251 Ross St., died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 15, 1913, in Savannah, Ga., he was the son of Paul Wright and Elizabeth Fireball Wright.
He was married
to Lora Wright, who survives.
A retired haberdasher, he was a member of and organist for Holbrook Street United Presbyterian Church.
He was the founder of Opera Ebony.
He was a member of Danville Choral Arts Society, and a promoter of the Arts and Humanities in Danville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Yolanda Jean Gross and Elizabeth Wright, both of New York; a granddaughter, Lora Genne' Wright of New York; and a son-in-law, Richard Gross of New York.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Holbrook Street United Presbyterian Church by Dr. George Wilson. Burial will be held in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
Viewing will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence.

Paul Hundley
Paul Truman Hundley, 98, 222 Courtland St., Apartment No. 242, Holiday Village, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997, at his residence following a decline in health for a number of years.
Born July 21, 1899, in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry Clay Hundley and Pearla Arnn Hundley.
He was married
to Lena Hoskins Hundley, who died on Sept. 17, 1983.
A resident of Danville for 72 years, he was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
After 40 years of service, he was retired from Dan River Inc.
Survivors include two daughters, Marie Prillaman of Danville and Urselle Tignor of Williamsburg; two sons, Clay C. Hundley and James D. Hundley, both of Richmond; a sister, Clarice Gauldin of Danville; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. David R. Turbyfill.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Marie Prillaman, 512 Westview Drive.

Erica Matthews
Erica Lynn Arrant Matthews, 29, 230 New Ingram Road, died Tuesday night, Aug. 19, 1997, soon after being admitted to Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 8, 1968, in Augusta, Ga., she was a daughter of William Arrant and Zeffie Arrant.
She was married
to John Matthews III, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Florida before moving to the Danville area in 1989.
She was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her parents of Pelham, N.C., survivors include two sons, Timothy Arrant and Eric Barnes, both of Pelham, N.C.; a brother, William M. Arrant of Milton, Fla.; and a sister, Anna A. Bailey of Pelham, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Jack Robertson.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her parents, 148 Orchard Lane off the Newman Road in Pelham, N.C.

Jason Clay
Carl Jason Clay, 25, 162 American Legion Blvd., died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997, at 1018 West Stokes St.
Born Dec. 12, 1971, in South Boston, he was the son of Carl Junior Clay and Patricia Saunders Clay Jarrett, who survive.
He lived his entire life in Danville, and was of the Baptist faith.
He formerly owned and operated Jay's Lawn Care and Landscaping before being disabled in a motorcycle accident in 1993.
He was an avid Grateful Dead fan.
In addition to his mother of the residence and his father of South Boston, survivors include two sisters, Nancy A. Combs of Danville and Alice A. Watson of Rocky Mount, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Wayne Jones. Burial will be held in Leemont cemetery.
