Mallie Abercrombie
Mallie Cade Abercrombie, 91, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997, at Stratford Health Center.
A native of McCormick County, S.C., Mrs. Abercrombie was a graduate of Winthrop College.
For 60 years, she was a resident of Greensboro, N.C., where she was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and a sustaining member of Greensboro Junior League.
She moved to Danville in 1995 and resided at Stratford House Retirement Home. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
Mrs. Abercrombie was predeceased by her husband, Milo B. Abercrombie Jr.
Survivors include her son, Milo Bolling Abercrombie III of Danville; three granddaughters, Elizabeth Daniels and Jane Eggleston, both of Danville, and Martha Woodley of Raleigh, N.C.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn cemetery in Greensboro, N.C.
The family will receive friends 12:30-1:30 Thursday at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, North Elm St., Greensboro, and other times at the residence of her son, 134 Blackwell Drive, Danville.

Diana Carter
Diana Lynne Carter, 34, 11953 Martinsville Highway, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997, at Stratford Health Center. She had been in declining health for 20 years and in serious condition for the past year.
Born Dec. 10, 1962, in Inglewood, Calif., she was the daughter of H. Hardy Carter and Hazel Hinton Carter, who survive.
After living a year in Inglewood, Calif., she spent the rest of her life in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County.
She had worked as a clerk for Carter's Grocery store.
She attended Gateway Christian School and Danville Christian School, and was a graduate of Tunstall High School.
She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
She is survived only by her parents of the residence.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. Fred Wade and the Rev. Daryl Joyce. Entombment will also be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Willie Coles
JAVA - Willie Thomas Coles, 81, 1029 Yeatts Store Road, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997, at his residence.
Born June 8, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Coles and Rebecca Jones Coles.
He was married
to Ella Barbour Coles, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Riceville Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons. He was a former member of the senior choir and a honorary member of the male chorus.
Survivors include two daughters, Nora C. Barsdale of the residence and Jean C. Dunn of Vernon Hill; three brothers, Frank Coles, Jerry Coles and Edward Lee Coles, all of Philadelphia; a sister, Beatrice Wilkerson of Java; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday from Riceville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Walker. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence.

Robert Grabowski
Robert William Grabowski, 67, 144 Bell Court, died Monday, Aug. 25, 1997, at his residence following several years of declining health.
Born Feb. 23, 1930, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of Walter Grabowski and Helen Grabowski.
On June 17, 1951, he was married
to Shirley Ross Grabowski, who survives.
After moving from Pittsburgh in 1977, he had lived in Danville for 20 years.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Until his retirement due to health reasons, he worked with Piedmont Vendors as food service manager.
He was a member of Ballard Pruitt Post 647, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Robert W. Grabowski of Stuart, Fla., Richard W. "Rick" Grabowski of Danville and Joseph J. Grabowski of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter, Dolly W. Jennings of Danville; a brother, Raymond Grabowski of Pittsburgh; and six grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Sacred Heart Catholic Church by the Rev. David McGuire. Burial will be held in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence of his daughter, 5009 Ridgewood Drive off of Mount Cross Road.
Richard Hanvey Sr.
HAMPTON - Richard Dix Hanvey Sr., 73, 5018 Arony St., died Monday afternoon, Aug. 25, 1997, at James River Convalescent Center in Newport News.
He had been in declining health since February 1997.
Born Aug. 9, 1924, in Guilford County, N.C., he was the son of Edward Hanvey and Amanda Ragle Hanvey, who survives.
He was married
to Elizabeth Gauldin Hanvey, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines.
He had spent most of his life in Danville and Hampton, where he had lived for 36 years.
Retired since 1989, he had been a painter for Enscore Paint Company.
He was a member of Warwick Moose Lodge No. 1711 in Newport News.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Richard Dix Hanvey Jr. of New Jersey and Bobby Lee Hanvey of Newport News; two daughters, Margaret E. Crites of Newport News and Janice Marie Teeter of Ithaca, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Gatewood of Danville; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, James Leonard Hanvey.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Thomas W. Evans. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Donald Vernon
SHEPHERDSVILLE, KY - Donald W. Vernon, 58, died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997.
He was a native of Danville, Va.
He was an Air Force Veteran and self-employed.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Vernon; a daughter, Sandra Vernon; a son, Robert Vernon; his father, Conrad Vernon; a sister, Edna Martin; and three granddaughters.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Shepherdsville. Burial will be held in Brookland cemetery.
Yvonne Gill
GREENVILLE, Ga. - Yvonne Simpkins Gill, 63, 219 Lee Lane, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Ga., after an extended illness.
Born July 6, 1934, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Roy Simpkins and Georgia Stroup-Simpkins.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Beverly Storm of Douglasville, Karen Ray of Newman
and Deborah Cochran of Greenville; two brothers, Jim Simpkins of Greensboro, N.C., and Raymond Simpkins of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Vivian Hutson of Eagle Rock, Va., and Vicky Keen of Lake Waccamaw, N.C., and Kay Pickell of Danville, Va.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Schoolfield cemetery by her brother, Jim Simpkins.

Rachel Melton
Rachel S. Melton, 65, 302 Cumberland Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997, at her residence.
Born Jan. 15, 1931, in Madison, N.C., she was a daughter of Beverly Shelton and Haily Tucker Shelton.
On Aug. 7, 1954, she was married
to James R. Melton Sr., who survives.
After more than 30 years of service, she was retired from Virginia Employment Commission.
She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, James R. Melton Jr. of Durham, N.C., and John R. Melton of Danville; three brothers, Bobby Shelton, Daniel Shelton and B.S. Shelton, all of Reidsville, N.C.; and two sisters, Marjorie Rusk of Dallas, Ga., and Mozelle Coggin of Greensboro, N.C.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Bessie Copher.

Henry Word
CHATHAM - Henry Lee Word, 58, 500 Callands Road, died Monday, Aug. 25, 1997, at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
Born March 15, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Quenston Word and Nannie K. Word.
He was married
to Ruth W. Word, who survives.
He was a member of Corinth Christian Church.
He served in the U.S. Army, and was an employee of Dan River Inc.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Andre' Word of the residence and Kenneth Lee Word of Electra, Texas; a daughter, Shelia W. Fitzgerald of Chatham; two brothers, Thomas Word of Fairfax and Edward Word of Atlantic City, N.J.; two sisters, Willie Jean Clark of Chatham and Mary Wolfe of Washington, D.C.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Corinth Christian Church by the Rev. Gary Page.
Interment will be held in Hillcrest Memorial Burial Park, where military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard of Danville.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
