Dorothy McCain
Dorothy T. McCain, 84, 308 Brady Road, Danville, died Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 29, 1912, in Danville, she was the daughter of Joseph and Nora Townes.
She was married
to Wally L. McCain, who preceded her in death.
She was a domestic worker.
She was a charter member of Vance Street Baptist Church, where she held various jobs and reponsibilities.
Survivors include a son, Langston V. McCain of Irvington, N.J.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Vance Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Dickerson. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
Mrs. McCain may be viewed 4-8 p.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence.
Florence Greenspan
ALEXANDRIA - Florence Esther Marlow Greenspan, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, following complications from a stroke.
Born Dec. 15, 1918, she was a daughter of Thomas Ellsworth Marlow and Martha Beatrice Seiders Marlow.
She was married
on June 21, 1942, to David Leon Greenspan, who survives.
She was a member of Olivet Episcopal Church in Alexandria. She also belonged to the Tall Cedars of Lebannon Ladies' Auxiliary and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Barbara Miller of Billings, Mont., Diane Spittle of Alexandria and Kathryn Davis of Danville; one sister, Mary Woodbridge of Rockville, Md.; two brothers, Thomas E. Marlow Jr. of Alexandria and Donald Marlow of Hilton Head, S.C.; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria. Interment
will be in Mount Comfort cemetery.
Percy Gunn Sr.
Percy Lee Gunn Sr., 64, 193 Gunn-Garland Court, Ringgold, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at his residence.
Born Jan. 20, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Gertrude Gunn Williams.
He was married
to Gracie Garland Gunn.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, of the residence, include his mother, Gertrude Gunn Williams and his step-father, Norman Williams Sr., both of Ringgold; two daughters, Janice Harris of Danville and Sandra Brandon of Ringgold; two sons, Percy Lee Gunn Jr. of Danville and Brian Gunn of Newport News; six sisters, Mary Ferrell, Ruby Harris, and Eva White, all of Danville, Josephine Perkins of Suitland, Md., Violet Davis of Washington, D.C., and Cecil Grasty of Ringgold; two brothers, Eddie Williams of Alexandria and Norman Williams Jr. of Ringgold; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kentuck Baptist Church by the Rev. Jessie Fitz. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Cooper Myers
Cooper Louis Myers, 92, of 272 Oakwood Circle, died Aug. 31, 1997, at his residence after a one-year decline in health.
Born Nov. 29, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Nathaniel Fredrick Myers and Ida Ann Hicks Myers.
He lived in the Washington, D.C., area before moving back to Danville in 1973. He had retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a postal inspector with more than 30 years of experience. After he retired, he worked as a bailiff for Prince George County.
He graduated the University of Richmond in 1927. He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church, where he was past president of the Fellowship Class. He was a member of Kent Masonic Lodge No. 305, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Danville and a Shrine member.
He was married
to Mae Walton Myers on Feb. 21, 1930.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Danville, include a brother, Ed. S. Myers of Ringgold; three sisters, Jane M. Pennington of Danville, Eva M. Walton of Ringgold and Ruth M. Price of Chatham; a daughter, Ann M. Lunceford of Fairfax; and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kentuck Baptist Church by the Rev. David Henry. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with Masonic Rites conducted at the graveside by Kent Masonic Lodge No. 305.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
'Buddy' Carter III
Eugene Vivian "Buddy" Carter III, 42, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C.
Born Aug. 18, 1955, in Danville, he was a son of E.V. "Buddy" Carter Jr. and Jane Terry Carter, who survive.
He was a life-long member of First Baptist Church.
He attended Danville Public Schools, Hampden-Sydney and Averett College.
He was employed by the Housing Authority for Community Development in Charleston, S.C.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include three brothers, James R. "Beau" Carter, Terry A. Carter and Patrick W. Carter, all of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Joe Northen and the Rev. David Gray. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his parents, 158 Marshall Terrace.
Myrtle Edwards
HURT - Myrtle Shelton Edwards, 91, 1821 Wards Road, died Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, at Autumn Care in Altavista.
Born Sept. 20, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Daniel R. Shelton and Maude Mayhew Shelton Farthing.
She was married
to Alton Parker Edwards, who predeceased her.
She was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, where she served as church pianist.
She was a retired cafeteria worker with the Pittsylvania County School System.
Survivors include a son, Alton Latane Edwards of Hurt; two daughters, Dana Edwards Fisher and Jane Edwards Shelton, both of Hurt; a sister, Evelyn Blanks of Hurt; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two daughters, Olene Edwards and Irolla Edwards; and two brothers, Irvin D. Shelton and Julian R. Shelton.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church by the Rev. Roger Wilborn, the Rev. Sam Caldwell and the Rev. Clark Mandigo. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Leola Giles
Leola Johnson Giles, 148 Dublin Court, died Monday night, Sept. 1, 1997, at her residence.
Born Mar. 20, 1914, in Danville, she was a daughter of George W. Johnson and Mollie Rowles Johnson.
On Dec. 6, 1941, she was married
to the Rev. Dr. Woodrow A. Giles, who survives.
She was a graduate of Dan River High School, and had worked in the personnel department for the War Department until 1945.
She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a sister, Mabel J. Hunt of Ringgold; and a brother, Julian B. Johnson of Ringgold.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jay Ashby, the Rev. Bob McAden and the Rev. Fred Wagner.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Helen Matherly
Helen Leona Matherly, 311 Edgewood Drive, died Monday morning, Sept. 1, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following four years of declining health.
She had been a resident at Piney Forest Health Care Center before entering the hospital.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Robert Matherly and Victoria Waldon Matherly.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area, and had lived in the Edgewood community for 55 years.
Before retiring, she worked in the spinning room at Dan River, Inc.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruby Flinchum of Danville and Mabel Crabb of Reidsville, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. today at the Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. J. Richard Markham. Burial will also be held in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 3:30-4 p.m. today at the mausoleum, and other times at the residence.

Margaret McCorkle
Margaret Wingfield McCorkle, 92, died Sept. 1, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She was formerly of 368 Pine Hill Road, Elizabethton, Tenn.
Born Nov. 11, 1904, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Edward Ernest Wingfield and Anne Maria Davis Wingfield.
She was married
to William Claiborne McCorkle, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a son, William Claiborne McCorkle Jr. of Madison, Ala.; a daughter, Susan McCorkle Fulk of Danville; three grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Elizabethton, Tenn., at a later date.
