SOUTH BOSTON - Von Hindenburg Patterson Sr., 81, 202 Pine Lane, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997.
Born Nov. 21, 1915, in Halifax County, he was the son of John G. Patterson Sr. and Hannah Moore Patterson.
He was married
to Virginia Norman Patterson, who survives.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include a son, Von H. Patterson Jr. of Pineville, N.C.; two daughters, Giny P. Cole of Cary, N.C., and Judy P. Sorrell of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Louise P. Slayton of South Boston; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church by the Rev. Norman R. Baty.
A private graveside service will be conducted at Oak Ridge cemetery at a later time.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Powell Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Mazie Shelton
Mazie Hundley Shelton, 61, 223 Mt. Herman Circle, died Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 19, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Posey Green Hundley and Mattie Buckner Hundley.
She was married
to Dewey Daniel Shelton, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a son, Danny Lee Shelton of Suffolk; three sisters, Janie H. Swartz of Johnson City, Tenn., and Beaulah H. Melton of Danville and Percy Allen Hundley of Henderson, Ky.; and three stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home by the Rev. Roger Collins. Burial will be held in Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery in Dry Fork.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Beaulah H. Melton, 5161 Golf Club Road in Danville.
Garland Turner
CHATHAM - William Garland Turner, 856 Evergreen Road, died Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 3, 1918, in Axton, he was a son of Charles Roy and Lula T. Turner. At age five, following the death of his parents, he and his brother, Charles Randolph Turner (now deceased), moved to Chatham and made their home with their aunt and uncle, Mr. & Mrs. Charles E. Terry.
He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, and continued his education at the University of Richmond and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.
During World War II, he served in the United States Coast Guard for four years, from 1942 to 1946, aboard a patrol frigate in the Pacific Theater.
In the late 1940s, he became associated with Scott Funeral Home in Chatham. In 1960, he offered for the office of Commissioner of Revenue for Pittsylvania County, was elected, and held that office for 24 years, retiring in December 1984.
He was a member of Chatham Baptist Church, where he served in various offices over the years.
He was a member of Ballard Pruit Chapter Veterans of Foreign Wars and Pittsylvania Lodge 24 A.F. & A.M., where he recently received his 50 year membership pin. He was a member of Chatham Lions Club and Pittsylvania County Historical Society.
He was a former member of the Chatham Town Council.
Civic work played a large part of his life. He served with Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, Chatham Rescue Squad, American Red Cross and Danville-Pittsylvania Mental Health Services Board (having held offices in all).
In 1996, he was awarded the Harriette W. Moore Award for his service as a volunteer with the Pittsylvania County Social Services.
He served on the board of Woodlawn Academy, and throughout his years supported sports programs for area youth.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Pearson Turner of the residence; a daughter, Terry Kathryn (Mrs. Ralph Hampton Joyce Jr.) of Danville; his devoted nephews, John R. Turner and wife Cheryl, of Roanoke; Dr. Mark G. Turner of Richmond; and Richard C. Turner and wife Susan, and sons Zachary and Benjamin, of Raleigh, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chatham Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Macon and the Rev. Julian Griffin. Interment
will be held in Chatham Burial Park, where Masonic Graveside Rites will be performed.
The family will receive friends at Scott Funeral Home Tuesday from seven until eight p.m.
The family suggests friends may wish to consider the Hargrave Military Academy Scholarship Fund as a memorial.
Robert Adams
CASCADE - Robert Price Adams, 65, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Cascade, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, in Pittsburgh.
Born March 5, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Willie Adams and Forstenia Adams.
He was a member of Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a self-employed painter.
Survivors include a son, Dearl Adams of Collinsville; three daughters, Venice Adams of Colorado, and Trina Gray and Amber Adams, both of Pittsburgh; five brothers, the Rev. Samuel Adams and Frank Adams, both of Cascade, Rudolph Adams of Pittsburgh and Phillip Adams and Troy Steve Adams, both of Hampton; six sisters, Modestine Breedlove of Hampton, the Rev. Lavender Williams of Danville, Mary Lightfoot of Cascade, Vivian Millner and Tammie Millner, both of Martinsville, and Fairy Davis of Richmond; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade. Burial will be held in the Adams Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 12:30-1 p.m. Thursday at the church.

The Rev. Joseph Garland
The Rev. Joseph Robert Garland, 77, 335 Airport Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at Veteran Administration Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Born Nov. 29, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Moses Garland and Mary Brown Garland.
He was married
to Louise Simon Garland, who survives.
Retired from Dan River Inc., he was the pastor of Nazarene Baptist Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include four sons, Joseph R. Garland Jr. of Richmond, Domonze Garland of Lampoe, Calif., and Jerry Garland and Damonic Garland, both of the residence; three daughters, Namoia G. Stroud of Danville, Veria Garland of Greensboro, N.C., and Demille Garland of High Point, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at East New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Jasper Watkins. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Paul Keatts
HAMPTON - Paul Johnson Keatts, 66, 920 Queen St., died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, at his residence following an extended illness.
Born Dec. 12, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of David J. Keatts and Ethel Anderson Keatts.
He was a retired truck driver for North American Van lines.
Survivors include three sisters, Annie Roberts of Hampton and Edith Robinson and Elnora Price, both of Chatham.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. today in Hampton by the Rev. Kenneth Elliot. Burial will be held in Oakland cemetery in Hampton.

Leroyal Tucker
Leroyal Elmer Tucker, 70, 727 Glendale Ave., died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 25, 1927, in Danville, he was a son of Elvin Clark Tucker and Elizabeth Wilburn Tucker, who survives.
He was married
to Dorothy Reed Tucker, who survives.
A life long resident of Danville, he worked for the City of Danville as a truck driver for the Refuse Department.
He was of the Baptist faith.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife and mother, both of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Patsy T. Moore and Judy Diane Patterson, both of Danville; a son, Dennis Reed Tucker of Danville; two brothers, Thomas Tucker and Julian Tucker, both of Danville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lee VonElme. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 6-7 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
