Pete Miller
Willie Lee "Pete" Miller IV, 48, 2354 Ridge Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following several years of declining health and one day in the hospital.
Born Oct. 18, 1948, in Picayune, Miss., he was a son of Willie Lee Miller III and Emmy Lou Catlin Miller, who survives.
On Aug. 22, 1970, he was married
to Susan Scott Miller, who survives.
In 1973, he moved to Danville from Livingston, Ala.
Until his retirement due to health reasons, he had worked for 15 years as a Quality Control Engineer for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company .
He served with the U.S. Army as second lieutenant.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Victoria, Texas, survivors include a son, Willie Lee "Billy" Miller V of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two brothers, Benjamin Shields Miller of Marion, Ala., and Edward Miller of Hampton; and a sister, Rebecca M. Hendrick of Victoria, Texas.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 2354 Ridge Road off of Ripley Drive on Route 41.
Helen Moorefield
ROANOKE - Helen H. Moorefield, 76, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997.
She was the widow of Warner H. Moorefield, and was also preceded in death by a stepson, Dale W. Moorefield.
She was retired from Colonial American Bank.
She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Williamson Road Chapter 119, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Julia D. and Whitey Richardson of Roanoke; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith M. and Bonnie N. Dodson of Vinton; four grandchildren, James J. Richardson IV, Lt. (J.G.) David K. Richardson, Brian K. Dodson and Andrew M. Dodson; a sister, Nile H. Snead of Frederick, Md.; a sister-in-law, Lois Booth of Danville; and a brother-in-law, Stanley Moorefield of Keeling.
Funeral services will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Friday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel by Dr. Harry Y. Gamble. Interment
will be 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
Elizabeth Moses
CHATHAM - Elizabeth Moses, 88, formerly of Chatham, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997, at Aiken Regional Hospital in Aiken, S.C.
She had resided in Belvedere, S.C., for the past 20 years, and had lived in National Health Center in North Augusta, S.C., for the last four years.
Born Dec. 10, 1908, in Lexington, she was a daughter of Alepheus Bealle Moses and Bessie Hoddnett Moses.
She was a member of Watson Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Kelly Moses Redd of North Augusta, S.C., and Gladys Moses McAllister of McKinney.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Forrest L. Moses, Alepheus H. Moses, Billy R. Moses and Jack G. Moses.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Chatham Burial Park by the Rev. William C. Thomas.

Adie Shivers
CHATHAM - Adie Shivers, 91, 1137 Toshes Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1997, in Franklin Health Care Center in Rocky Mount.
Born April 26, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Gilbert Edwards and Cissie Martin Edwards.
She was married
first to John Cook, then to Charles Williams and lastly to the Rev. Harvey Shivers, who all predeceased her.
In 1926, she left the Chatham area and moved to New York. She resided in New York and Pennsylvania for a number of years before moving back home in 1988.
She was a former member of Bethel Baptist Church in Pottstown, Pa. After moving back home, she joined Sandy Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Lora Ramsey of Chatham and Susan Davis of New York City.
She was predeceased by a sister, Hazel Edwards.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Raymond Ramsey. Burial will be in Piney Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Joseph Washington
CHATHAM - Joseph H. Washington, 78, 1196 Beverly Heights Road, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
A native of Danville, he was born April 20, 1919.
He was a laborer for a U.S. Navy shipyard.
He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.
Survivors include three sons, Alfred Washington of Philadelphia, Irvin Washington of the residence and Wayne Washington of Long Island, N.Y.; a daughter, Constance Taylor of Chatham; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church by the Rev. Fred Wilson. Burial will be in the Washington Family cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be 7-8 tonight at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Florence Humphrey
DRY FORK - Florence Mills Humphrey, 84, formerly of 3500 Dry Fork Road, died Friday, Sept. 5, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home for a year.
Born Nov. 10, 1912, in Dry Fork, she was a daughter of Roy Kent Mills and Emma Daniels Mills.
In 1932, she was married
to John M. Humphrey Sr., who died in 1979.
Prior to her retirement, she had lived in Paterson, N.J., and was employed by Perfect Silk Mills for 25 years.
In 1971, she had returned to the Dry Fork community.
She was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include three sons, John M. Humphrey Jr. of Burlington, N.C., Ronald Humphrey of Anderson, S.C., and Dennis Humphrey of Glendale, Az.; a daughter, Reba Morandi of Wayne, N.J.; two brothers, Charlie Mills and Clarence Mills, both of Dry Fork; a sister, Louise M. Garner of Thomasville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Melvyn Humphrey; and three sisters, Arabelle Smith, Ethel Carothers and Christine Collins.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roger Collins and the Rev. Cecil Coates. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today and Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel.
Amelia Irwin
Amelia Myers Irwin, 83, 3236 R. and L. Smith Drive, in the Mount Hermon community, died Friday, Sept. 5, 1997, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born April 19, 1914, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Amos Myers and Sadie Hill Myers.
She was married
to Richard J. Irwin, who died Oct. 3, 1987.
She attended Strayer College and Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C.
She was employed as a secretary by Herman Koplen, attorney, VPI-Danville Division, Stratford College and Leggett Stores.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Catholic Women's Club. She was also a member of Glen Oak Country Club, Belk Leggett retired Employees Friendship Circle and AARP.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ellen Switzer of Del Mar, Calif., Sadie T. Johnson of Richmond and Dorothy I. Pigott of Danville; two brothers, Richard J. Irwin III of Glendora, Calif., and Amos E. Irwin of Charleston, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Monday, time still pending, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father David V. McGuire. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday with a Christian Wake at 7 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Katheryne Wilkerson
Katheryne Scruggs Wilkerson, 94, 720 Lee St., died Thursday, Sept. 4, 1997, at her residence.
Born May 22, 1903, in Danville, she was a daughter of James Edward Scruggs and Grace Keaton Scruggs.
In September of 1927, she was married
to Vernon F. Wilkerson Sr., who died Oct. 7, 1985.
She was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church, and was active in the local and State Wide United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Vernon F. Wilkerson Jr. of Salisbury, N.C.; a sister, Evelyn S. Evans of Danville; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Cobb and the Rev. Rebecca Yow. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
