Dora Barker
Dora Brown Barker, 88, of 231 S. Ridge St., Heritage Towers No. 217, died Saturday morning, Sept. 6, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born April 30, 1909, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of James Robert Brown and Penelope Turner Brown.
She was a member of Community Baptist Church and she worked as a battery filler at Dan River Inc. She lived most of her life in Danville.
She was married
to Joseph Jackson Barker, who predeceased her. A daughter, Shirley Nichols, and a son, Horace J. Baker, also predeceased her.
Survivors include two brothers, Ray Brown and John Brown, both of Greensboro, N.C.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Community Baptist Church by the Rev. James Albert with burial in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at 236 Eastwood Drive.
David A. Burke
David A. Burke, 21, of 123 Franklin Court, died Thursday evening, Sept. 4, 1997.
Born June 15, 1976, in Danville, he was a son of Roger D. Burke and Barbara Vassar Burke.
He was self-employed in the home improvement-construction business and was of the Baptist faith.
He was married
to Octavia Roach Burke on June 3, 1997.
In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include three brothers, Roger W. Burke, Steven R. Burke and Christopher D. Burke, all of Danville; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Vassar of Danville; paternal grandfather, B.D. Burke of Danville.
The graveside funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Ross Range Sr. in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.
Isabella Clark
Isabella Echols Clark, 84, 672 Jefferson St., died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 20, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Nan and Harriett Calloway.
She was a former employee of Dan River Inc. and a former member of Washington Street Baptist Church, currently Bennett Memorial Baptist Church. She later became a member of the Vance Street Baptist Church.
She is survived by five sisters-in-law, Janice E. Anderson, Mamie Jackson and Pearl Maefield, all of Danville, Orpha Calloway of Sutherlin and Alberta Parker of Baltimore.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at Vance Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Dickerson. Interment
will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mamie Elliott
Mamie Cove Wells Elliott, 100, formerly of 300 Sharon Road in the Sharon community, died Saturday afternoon, Sept. 6, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born April 19, 1897, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Johnnie James Wells and Ada Bell Roach Wells.
Most of her life was spent in the Schoolfield and Sharon communities before she entered the nursing home in 1989. She was married
to Louis Arthur Elliott, who died Feb. 17, 1978. She was retired from Dan River Inc. in No. 3 Dress.
She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Ollie Wallace of the Sharon community; one sister, Elizabeth Pyron of Danville; one brother, John Wells of Danville; one granddaughter, two great-granddaughters and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe Beck, the Rev. Kenneth Terry and Missionary Fannie Lowe. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will be at the home of her granddaughter, Nell Stowe, at 324 Franklin Turnpike.

Robin Jones
Robin Largen Jones, 38, of 721 Westridge Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 1997, suddenly in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 8, 1959, in Martinsville, she was the daughter of Gene Largen and Nell Harrison Largen, who survive.
On June 10, 1997, she was married
to Ronnie Gene Jones.
She lived most of her life around Naples and Marco Island, Fla. before moving back to Danville 12 years ago. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Fulton Neal, DDS until his retirement and was presently working with Dr. Arthur Silvers, DDS.
She was a graduate of Drewy Mason High School. She had attended Averett College and had just started back last week to complete her degree.
She attended St. Johns United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband of residence and her parents of Naples, Fla., survivors include a son, Zachary Howell of the residence; two stepsons, Brian Todd Jones and Michael Corey Jones, both of the residence; and a brother, Ronnie Largen of Naples, Fla.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
The family will receive friends at the the residence, 721 Westridge Drive off Meadowview Drive on U.S. Route 58 west.

Richard "Simp" Kelley
Deacon Richard "Simp" Kelley, 72, 238 Sylvan Road, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, at his residence.
Born Nov. 23, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Carlton Kelley and Lena Harris Kelley.
He was married
to Nonia Kelley, who predeceased him.
He was retired from Dan River Inc. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Hurt, where he served on the Board of Deacons.
Survivors include a son, Jimmie Kelley of Danville; three brothers, Joe Kelley, Frank Kelley and Willie Kelley, all of Danville; four sisters, Texanna Robertson and Lena Mae Kelley, both of Danville, Alice Boothe of Hurt and Minnie Lewis of Gretna.
He was predeceased by a brother, Fred Kelley, and a sister, Clara Crews.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Jones with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence and the body may be viewed 1-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Gladys McDowell
Gladys Shelton McDowell, 86, of 218 Parkland Drive, died Friday, Sept. 5, 1997, in the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County after a one-year decline in health.
Born March 31, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Averett Shelton and Lillian Motley Shelton.
She lived her life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area, where she was a member of College Park Baptist Church. She was also a member of W.M.U. for 49 years. She worked with Roman Eagle Memorial Home and for Danville Regional Medical Center as a sitter for many years prior to her retirement.
Her husband, William B. McDowell, to whom she was married
on April 11, 1936, died Nov. 18, 1973. She was predeceased by a daughter, Brenda McDowell, and two brothers, Grover Shelton and T.A. Shelton.
Survivors include her daughter, Cornelia M. Gery of Richmond; four sisters, Eva S. Higgins and Rosa Lee Miller, both of Danville, Mary S. Jones and Sarah S. Durham, both of Burlington, N.C.; three brothers, James G. Shelton and Calvin B. Shelton, both of Chatham, and Clifton P. Shelton of Burlngton, N.C.; one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the North Main Street chapel of Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home by the Rev. Michael Rockwell and the Rev. Dean Lamphere. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the home of Eva Higgins at 457 Ridgecrest Drive.
Classie Motley
Classie Beatrice Motley, 73, of 86 Oakvale Circle, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, at her residence.
Born Sept. 5, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Womack and Lena Wilson.
She was married
to Joe Motley.
She had been employed by Dan River Inc. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where she served as an usher and was a member of the Senior Choir and the Rosa Robertson Circle.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Raleigh Motley of Lynchburg and Jimmy Motley of Danville; and three daughters, Joann Dickerson of Danville, Rachel Hodge of Lynchburg and Jacqueline Motley-Howell of Richmond.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph Cypress. Interment
will follow in the Crooktown cemetery. The viewing will be 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family is residing at 86 Oakvale Circle.
John Nance
John Francis Nance, 92, of 144 Fairmont Circle, died Saturday morning, Sept. 6, 1997, at his residence.
Born Jan. 16, 1905, in Martinsville, he was the son of J.T. Nance and Dollie Powell Nance.
A member of West End Christian Church and Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122, he was a former manager of B.F. Goodrich Tire Store in Danville and later was warehouse manager for the Pittsylvania Hardware Co. until his retirement. He lived most of his life in Danville and was educated in the Danville public schools.
He was married
to Mary Durham Nance on May 12, 1940.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, survivors include a son, Dr. John F. Nance Jr. of Vienna; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. today from the chapel of Townes Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Arthur Beam. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery with Masonic graveside rites by Roman Eagle Lodge No. 122.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
