Mary Alice Clark
JAVA - Mary Alice Clark, 73, 804 Brownsville Heights Lane, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 4, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James A. Wimbush and Harriett Osborne Wimbush.
She was a homemaker and a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Harriett Robertson of the residence, Karen Hope Martin of Java and Rosa Marie Clark of Chatham; six sons, Willie Clark and Ernest Clark, both of Trenton, N.J., Danny Clark of Ringgold, Gene Clark of the residence, James Barksdale of Danville and Walter T. Barksdale of Chatham; a sister, Lillie Hairston of Java; a brother, James T. Wimbush of Java; 22 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. G.H. Pass. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Miller Funeral Home in Gretna is in charge of arrangements.
Stella W. Gatewood
GRETNA - Stella Scruggs Wyatt Gatewood, 96, of 220 Floyd Bennett Farm Road, died Monday morning, Sept. 8, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 19, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, she a daughter of John William Scruggs and Minnie Ashworth Scruggs.
Mrs. Gatewood was married
to William Thomas Wyatt, who predeceased her. Later, she was married
to Luddon B. Gatewood, who also predeceased her.
She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church, and was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 252 of Gretna.
She is survived by a son, William E. Wyatt of Gretna; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann W. Campbell and Deroy Campbell of Rocky Mount, and Nancy W. Bennett and Floyd Bennett of Gretna.
Mrs. Gatewood was predeceased by a sister, Nannie S. Gregory; and three brothers, Richard Scruggs, Virgil Scruggs and Carson Scruggs.
She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 1997, from Chatham Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Macon. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8 at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Nancy W. Bennett, 220 Floyd Bennett Farm Road.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions may be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad or Chatham Baptist Church.
Robin Jones
Robin Largen Jones, 38, of 223 Westridge Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 1997, suddenly in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 8, 1959, in Martinsville, she was the daughter of Gene Largen and Nell Harrison Largen, who survive.
On June 10, 1997, she was married
to Ronnie Gene Jones.
She spent most of her life around Naples and Marco Island, Fla., before moving back to Danville 12 years ago. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Fulton Neal, DDS, until his retirement and was working with Dr. Arthur Silvers, DDS.
She was a graduate of Drewy Mason High School. She had attended Averett College and had started attending Danville Community College last week.
She attended St. John's United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband of residence and her parents of Naples, Fla., survivors include a son, Zachary Howell of the residence; two stepsons, Brian Todd Jones and Michael Corey Jones, both of the residence; and a brother, Ronnie Largen of Naples, Fla.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by the Rev. Steven Greer and the Rev. Dr. Bob Hamilton. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the the residence.
Desmond Tyler
GRETNA - Desmond R. Tyler, 26, 169 Franklin St., died Sunday morning, Sept. 7, 1997, on State Highway 40, four miles west of Gretna.
Born Jan. 25, 1971, in Daly City, Calif., he was the son of Audley Tyler and Hollis Trivers Tyler, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army Artillery Division, and received the National Defense Service Medal for his service in the Persian Gulf War.
In addition to his mother of Gretna, survivors include a sister, Deirdre Tyler of Gretna; his maternal grandmother, Elma Trivers of Gretna; and his ex-wife, Callandra Hall Tyler of Gretna.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. B.I. Baize. Burial will be in Elba cemetery.
The remains may be viewed from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Willie Aldridge
Willie James Aldridge, 90, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 9, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Born July 19, 1907, in Graham, N.C., he was the son of Jacob Samuel Aldridge and Anna Eliza Stanfield Aldridge.
He was married
to Ann Underwood Aldridge, who died Nov. 17, 1972.
He spent most of his adult life in Danville.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a career sales representative.
In his retirement years, he was active in the Danville Senior Citizens Center and the Bright Leaf Promenaders, and worked with the Pittsylvania Community Meals on Wheels program.
He was a member of Kauffman Brydon Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122 and a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He was also a member of West Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Mark Russell Aldridge of Marietta, Ga.; a daughter, Lavenia Susan Aldridge Norford of Bridgewater; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Bruce Wilson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home.
Novella Greene
RINGGOLD - Novella Kendrick Greene, 87, 1585 Little Creek Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 1997, at her residence.
Born Oct. 28, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Craig T. Kendrick and Lee Gibson Kendrick.
She was married
to Charlie Thomas Greene, who died Feb. 8, 1965.
A life-long resident of the Ringgold community, she was a homemaker.
She was the oldest active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a member for the past 45 years. She was also an adult Sunday school teacher for 10 years.
She was a charter member of United Methodist Women.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda G. Collins of Ringgold.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Claude J. Kendrick and Edward T. Parker; and a sister, Pearl K. Greene.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Howard Greene, the Rev. Henry Taylor and the Rev. Rebecca Yow.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

George Martin Sr.
George Russell Martin Sr., 93, 163 Howeland Circle, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 9, 1904, in Danville, he was the son of George Claiborne Martin and Louise Moorefield Martin.
On May 6, 1939, he was married
to Elsie Gosney Martin, who survives.
A life-long resident of Danville, he worked for Danville Traction and Power Co. and General Tire and Rubber Co. as service manager prior to his retirement.
He was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, George R. Martin Jr. of Danville and Edwin Martin of Vinton; a sister, Virginia Stockton of Roanoke; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Bruce Wilson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Bishop Charles Miller Sr.
CHATHAM - Bishop Charles H. Miller Sr., 71, 385 Friendship Road, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 9, 1997, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem.
Born Jan. 2, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie W. Miller and Videlia Waller Miller.
He was married
to Lois C. Miller, who survives.
He was educated in the Pittsylvania County Public School System.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
From July 1973 to April 1979, he served as the executive director of the Pittsylvania County Community Action Agency.
He was active in a number of civic organizations and boards.
For 19 years, he was the pastor of First Church of Jesus Apostolic in Altavista.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Dr. Charles H. Miller Jr. of Chatham; two sisters, Elizabeth Faison of Roxboro, N.C., and Shirley Chambers of Gretna; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Jessie L. Miller.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Church of Jesus by Bishop Alon J. Coleman and Elder Gary Davis.
Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military honors will be performed by VFW Post No. 4165 and DAV No. 46 of Altavista.
