Willie Aldridge
Willie James Aldridge, 90, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 9, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Born July 19, 1907, in Graham, N.C., he was the son of Jacob Samuel Aldridge and Anna Eliza Stanfield Aldridge.
He was married
to Ann Underwood Aldridge, who died Nov. 17, 1972.
He spent most of his adult life in Danville.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a career sales representative.
In his retirement years, he was active in the Danville Senior Citizens Center and the Bright Leaf Promenaders, and worked with the Pittsylvania Community Meals on Wheels program.
He was a member of Kauffman Brydon Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122 and a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He was also a member of West Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Mark Russell Aldridge of Marietta, Ga.; a daughter, Lavenia Susan Aldridge Norford of Bridgewater; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Bruce Wilson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home.
Frederick Vernon
Frederick Lee Vernon, 30, 1145 Ferguson Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following a decline in health since June.
Born Dec. 28, 1966, in Fort George G. Mead, Md., he was the son of Archie Vernon Jr. and Linda Knowles Vernon.
On May 9, 1991, he was married
to Tina Wilson Vernon, who survives.
He was a 1984 graduate of George Washington High School. In 1995, he graduated from Danville Community College as an electronic analyst.
Before his retirement due to disability, he was a technician at WDRL-TV.
He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include two sisters, Anita Lynn Vernon of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Samantha Renee Vernon of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. David Henry. Burial will be in Danview cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Charles Banse
Charles Megronigle Banse, 81, died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, at his residence following several years of declining health.
Born May 3, 1916, in Camden, N.J., he was a son of Albert Banse and Julia Megronigle Banse.
On Feb. 7, 1937, he was married
to Janet R. Banse, who survives.
He spent most of his life in New Jersey. In 1994, he and his family moved from Marlton, N.J., to Danville.
Prior to his retirement, he was self-employed as an artist.
He was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Diane Banse of the residence and Sallie Maynard of New Jersey; two brothers, Warren Banse of Williamstown, N.J., and Wesley Banse of Manasquan, N.J.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
Louise Rogers
BLAIRS - Louise Haynes Rogers, 75, 3104 Snakepath Road, died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William R. Haynes and Grace Scruggs Haynes.
She was married
to Aylor G. Rogers, who survives.
She served in the U.S. Army, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband of the residence.
She was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Henry; and a brother, William Haynes.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times will be at the residence.
Hassie Strader Cook
Mrs. Hassie Clara Strader Cook, 85, 30 Glen Oak Drive, died Friday evening, Sept. 12, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center where she had been a resident for two months.
Born May 16, 1912, in Ruffin, N.C., she was a daughter of Joe Dolphus Strader and Martha Betty Weatherford Strader.
She was married
to John Robert Cook, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she worked for Dan River Inc. as an inspector.
She was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church where she and her husband were custodians for many years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Martha Elizabeth Cook Carrigan and Mildred Louise Cook Dickens Herndon, both of Danville; two sisters, Hazel Strader Lee of Danville, and Hester Strader Bailey of Pelham, N.C.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ray Humphries and the Rev. Roger Collins. Interment
will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Percy Crews
Percy Frank Crews, 70, 4249 Strawberry Road, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 9, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Crews and Cordie Young Crews.
He was a farmer and of the Methodist faith.
He was married
to Mildred Adkins Crews.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Frank W. Crews, James R. Crews and Kenneth L. Crews, all of Chatham; one daughter, Deborah Ann Hammock of Danville; two sisters, Sally C. Knick of Chatham, and Janie C. Comer of Halifax; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Charlie L. Crews and George C. Crews; and one sister, Lizzie C. Heath.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larry Owen and the Rev. Steve Crews. Burial will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. tonight, and at the residence of his son, Kenneth Crews, 4301 Strawberry Road.
Virginia Jenkins
MARIETTA, Ga. - Virginia Giles Jenkins, 58, 397 Winston Road, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 1997, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home in Atlanta after a two-year decline in health.
Born Feb. 12, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charles Edward Giles and Hazel Lewis Giles.
She was married
to Norman Jenkins, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, Byron Keith Thompson of Ackworth, Mark Edward Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and David Allen Thompson of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Elaine G. Ashley of Norfolk, Va., and Faye G. Jones of Halifax, Va.; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at West Cobb Funeral Home in Marietta. Interment
will be in Cheatum Hill Memorial Park.
Virginia Poteat
Virginia Calvert Poteat, 79, 410 Seminole Trail, died Saturday morning, Sept. 13, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a two-week decline in health.
Born Feb. 28, 1918, in Danville, she was a daughter of Henry Lee Calvert and Carrie Elizabeth Scearce Calvert.
She had lived all of her life in Danville, and was educated in Danville Public Schools.
She owned and operated Poteat's Hairstylist for more than 40 years until she retired.
She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
On Nov. 25, 1937, she was married
to Paul Poteat, who died Dec. 16, 1994.
Survivors include one son, Paul Trent Poteat of Danville; one daughter, Barbara P. Baugher of Danville; one brother, Lynn Calvert of Danville; three sisters, Eunice Scearce and Ruby Calvert, both of Danville, and Lois Pitcher of Arlington; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Ron Mateer and the Rev. Don Davidson. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Dorothy Tanner
Dorothy P. Tanner, 66, 109 Ross St., died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 11, 1930, in Danville, she was the daughter of Charlie E. and Martha Clark Poteat Sr.
She was married
to George Washington Tanner.
She was a homemaker and member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by five sons, George W. Tanner Jr. of San Francisco, Charles K. Tanner, Morris Tanner, Ronald Tanner, and Gregory W. Tanner, all of Danville; six daughters, G. Wilma Terry, Gloria B. Tanner, Christine Tanner, and Toni Bullock-Tanner, all of Danville, and JoAnn Tanner of Cornea, N.Y., and Kathy Tanner of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Charlie E. Poteat Jr. of New York City; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Serenus T. Churns. Interment
will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
Her body may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. tonight at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence of a daughter, G. Wilma Terry, 519 Poplar St.
