Dewey Hutchins Sr.

BALTIMORE - Dewey M. Hutchins Sr., 68, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 1997, at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.

Born Aug. 14, 1929, in Danville, Va., he was a son of James E. Hutchins Sr. and Alfrezia Mimms Hutchins.

After 40 years of service, he was retired from Sears and Roebuck.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra Hoard and Beverly Hutchins, both of Danville; a son, Dewey M. Hutchins Jr. of Newport News, Va.; six brothers, Lawrence Hutchins and Ralph Hutchins, both of Richmond, Va., Rudolph Hutchins of Danville, Robert Hutchins of South Hill, Va., James E. Hutchins Jr. of Roanoke, Va., and Frank Hutchins of Baltimore; and three grandsons.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Alfrezia "Penny" Hutchins.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. Jerome Morris and the Rev. J.P. Griffith. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at 306 Sycamore St.

Alice Koonce

Alice Carter Koonce, 65, 167 Riverview Drive, Lot 28, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 16, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a four-year decline in health.

Born Oct. 30, 1931, in Floyd County, she was a daughter of Steven Johnson Marshall and Irene Trail Marshall Starr.

She was married to Marvin Carter, who died March 1, 1967. She was later married to Wayne Koonce, who survives.

She spent most of her life in the Danville area, where she had formerly worked at Heart Line restaurant. She later retired from the Back Door Deli.

She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Linda Lewis of Danville and Robin Young of Jacksonville, N.C.; two sons, Marvin Carter of Danville and Ray Carter of Baltimore; six brothers, Johnny Marshall of Floyd, Billy Marshall and Roy Marshall, both of Roanoke, Richard Marshall and Wilco Marshall, both of Richmond, and Danny Marshall of Florida; four sisters, Belva Raymond and Mary Atue, both of San Diego, and Audrey Yeatts and Ellen McElheney, both of Danville; four half-brothers, Jerry Marshall, Ronald Marshall, Donnie Marshall and Ray Marshall, all of Frederick, Md.; a half-sister, Peggy Ridge of Frederick, Md.; five stepchildren; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Neal Isom. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Linda Lewis, 1855 Rainbow Circle off of Old Hunting Hills in the Mt. Cross community.

Eliza Rowland

Eliza Herndon Rowland, 59, 236 B Jones Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 11, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Harold Herndon and L.Z. Holley Herndon.

On June 29, 1956, she was married to Cedric Aaron Rowland, who survives.

A life-long resident of Pittsylvania County, she was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Barry Wayne Rowland and Ricky Lynn Rowland, both of Danville; two daughters, Connie Ann R. Tuggle of Danville and Cathy Diana R. Lawrence of Sutherlin; two brothers, Douglas Wayne Herndon of Dry Fork and Dwight Harold Herndon of Danville; six sisters, Geraldine H. Kendrick of Dry Fork, Frances H. Fitzpatrick of Chesapeake, Judy H. Snead and June H. Tate, both of Cascade, and Dorothy H. Aaron and Wendy H. Haymore, both of Danville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Gil Hawks and the Rev. Hylton Lawrence.

Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Daphne Stone

Daphne Lynette Stone, 17, 148 Kenmore Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 3, 1979, in Danville, she was a daughter of Michael J. Stone and Brenda Williams Stone, who survive.

She was a student at George Washington High School.

In addition to her parents of the residence, survivors include a sister, Danielle Stone of the residence; her maternal grandparents, William and Hattie Dallas of Danville; her maternal grandfather, Calvin Williams of Danville; and her paternal grandparents, Elijah and Queen Stone of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at Bibleway Worldwide Church by Apostle L.G. Campbell. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wallace Talley

Wallace Otwa Talley, 70, 1213 Myrtle Ave., died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Duke Medical Center following a year of declining health and a two-month stay in the hospital.

Born July 16, 1927, in Danville, he was a son of Thomas C. Talley Sr. and Lola Brown Talley.

He lived most of his life in the Danville area, where for 20 years he owned and operated Talleys market.

He was a member of Shephard Baptist Church.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by a brother, Brantley Talley of Pawtuckett, R.I.

He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas C. Talley Jr.; and a sister, Thelma Talley Oakes.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Hubert Evans.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a nephew, Carlton Oakes, 1068 David Giles Lane, Blairs.

Berta Wilkerson

Berta Lovelace Wilkerson, 90, 500 Pruitt Road, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 16, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a two-year decline in health.

Born June 8, 1907, in Pelham, N.C., she was the daughter of James M. Lovelace and Ella Grooms Lovelace.

She was married to Levi Thomas Wilkerson, who died in April 1960.

A life-long resident of the Danville area, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Stateline Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Thomas A. Wilkerson, Bud F. Wilkerson and Clarence J. Wilkerson, all of Pelham, and Darrell B. Wilkerson of Danville; two daughters, Louise W. Bray and Shirley J. Myers, both of Pelham; a brother, S. Clipper Lovelace of Pelham; 27 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Roy J. Wilkerson, who died on June 3, 1997.

Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Wayne Wallace. Burial will be in the Wilkerson Family cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence off Holland Road.

James Glass Jr.

James Glass Jr., 66, 208 Victoria St., died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 5, 1931, in Danville, he was a son of Jim H. Glass and Nellie Ferrell Glass.

He served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include five sisters, Mary Alice Glass, Irene Glass, Annette Garnor, Joyette Nereen and Sue Ella Glass, all of Hempstead, N.Y.; and four brothers, Abraham Glass and David Glass, both of Pleasantville, N.J., and Alfonza Glass of Bronx, N.Y., and Archie Glass of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Camp Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest Barksdale. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

The remains may be viewed this afternoon at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Daphne Stone

Funeral services for Daphne Lynette Stone, 17, 148 Kenmore Drive, will be conducted 3 p.m. today at Bibleway Worldwide Church by Apostle L.G. Campbell. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

She died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 3, 1979, in Danville, she was a daughter of Michael J. Stone and Brenda Williams Stone, who survive.

She was a student at George Washington High School.

In addition to her parents of the residence, survivors include a sister, Danielle Stone of the residence; her maternal grandparents, William and Hattie Dallas of Danville; her maternal grandfather, Calvin Williams of Danville; and her paternal grandparents, Elijah and Queen Stone of Danville.

William Taylor

CHATHAM - William Harrison Taylor, 76, 1368 Beverley Heights Road, died Sunday morning, Sept. 14, 1997, at Gretna Health Care.

Born Nov. 24, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Taylor and Hattie Bradner Taylor.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was a retired farmer, and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, William Torain of Chatham; four sisters, Elder Millie Clark and Frances Toran, both of Chatham, and Quenell Prunty and Delois Pacheco, both of Jamestown, N.Y.; two brothers, Lazarus Taylor of Jamestown, N.Y., and Richard Taylor of Petersburg; and two granddaughters and a foster grandson.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Earl Taylor, Henry Taylor and Kenneth Taylor; and three sisters, Wilma Taylor, Gladys Hubbard and Bernice Mease Taylor.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Deering. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military honors will be performed by VFW Post 4165 and DAV Chapter 46 of Altavista.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.
