Mamie Thornton
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Mamie Thornton, 72, died Sunday morning, Sept. 14, 1997, at Beth-Israel Medical Center in Brooklyn.
Born May 8, 1925, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of McKinley Thornton and Jennie Thornton.
She was educated in the public schools of Caswell County, N.C.
Survivors include three daughters, Evon McCloud of Danville, Va.; Betty Jeffreys of Blanch, N.C., and Carolyn Farmer of Brooklyn; a brother, Walter Thornton of Danville; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at New Haven Baptist Church in Milton, N.C., by the Rev. Floyd Standfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be 12-8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Betty Jeffreys, Blanch Road, Blanch, N.C.
Virginia Adkins
Virginia Strader Adkins, 744 Audubon Drive, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following two years of declining health. She had been in the hospital for 17 days.
Born in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Joe William Strader and Annie Laura Whitlow Strader.
She was first married
to Will Haley, who predeceased her. On July 28, 1962, she was married
to Maurice A. Adkins, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville and Pittsylvania County and was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc. in the No. 1A Weave Room for 35 years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Joice Stanley of Danville; a sister, Naomi Fender of Pine Valley, N.C.; and two half-sisters, Mamie Branscome and Helen Walker, both of Danville.
She was also predeceased by two sisters, Lottie Mae Waddell and Emma Frances Barker, and a brother, Willie Strader.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Ron Mateer and the Rev. Dr. David Palmer. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Andrew Brown
GRETNA - Andrew Brown, 79, 480 Zion Road, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem.
Born Sept. 6, 1917, in Anderson, N.C., he was a son of Johnny and Prudene Brown.
He was married
to Enola Brown, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a mechanic for Gold Ring Motors in Brooklyn, N.Y.
During World War II, he served in the Army.
He was also a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two brothers, Ollie Brown of Jamaica, N.Y., and Frank Brown of Washington, D.C.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth J. Brown and Sylvinia Benson; and a brother, Archie Brown.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Gretna by the Rev. P.H. Wagstaff and the Rev. Hubert White. Burial will be in Fairview Baptist Church cemetery.
Frank Chaney
The funeral for Frank Jefferson Chaney, 89, 581 Arlington Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Ron Mateer and Dr. David Palmer. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, in his residence.
Born March 14, 1908, in the Laurel Grove community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Henry Chaney and Lillie Dodson Chaney.
On Aug. 2, 1943, he was married
to Inez Ellington Chaney, who survives.
He spent his entire life in the Danville area and was a member of Redman Poquoson Tribe No. 124.
He was a retired clothing salesman, having worked for The Hub, Kaufman's and Silvermans.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Barry F. Chaney of Kent, Wash.; four sisters, Mary C. Bennett of Sutherlin, Helen C. Burton of Halifax, Ruth C. Barker of Ringgold and Patsy C. Guill of Altavista; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Chaney and James Chaney.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Richard Floyd Sr.
LAKE WALES, FLA. - A graveside memorial service for Richard M. Floyd Sr., 101, 512 11th St. South, will be conducted 3 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va., by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
He died Saturday, May 31, 1997, in Grove Center Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for three years.
Born Dec. 20, 1895, in Brunswick County, Va., he was a son of Robert Samuel Floyd and Lucy Rebecca Shell Floyd.
He was married
to Lucille Edwards Floyd, who died Oct. 29, 1954. In 1955, he was married
to Johnsie Edwards Wynn, who died July 29, 1985.
For over 80 years, he was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church, where he had served as secretary of the Sunday school and on the administrative board until moving to Roanoke, Va.
While living in Danville, he was in the grocery business and later worked for Wilson & Co. until 1943. In 1944, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the meat grading service. He continued this job until his retirement in 1964, when he moved to Nalcrest in Lake Wales.
During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps with a contingent of men from Danville.
Survivors include two sons, Richard M. Floyd Jr. and Robert K. Floyd, both of Danville; a stepdaughter, Johnsie Wynn Banks of Las Vegas; a sister, Ola Floyd Duke of Murfreesboro, N.C.; a brother, George Floyd of Emporia, Va.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sons, Richard M. Floyd Jr., 166 Naples St., Danville, and Robert K. Floyd, 255 Rambler Drive, Danville.

Frances Mabe
The funeral for Frances L. Mabe, 73, formerly of Harris Loop Road, Stoneville, N.C., will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Fairview Baptist Church. Burial will be in Ridgeview cemetery.
She died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Rockingham County, N.C.
She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a spinner for Spray Cotton Mill.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Echols of Danville; four sisters, Lillian Chilton, Clarice Odell and Pauline Baynes, all of Eden, N.C., and Lera Ellen Chilton of Stoneville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Jamie Macklin
Jamie R. Macklin, 65, 522 Wimbish Drive, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, in his residence.
He was born Nov. 11, 1931, in Blackridge.
He was married
to Patricia V. Macklin, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Inc.
He was a member of High Street Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the deacon board.
He was also a member of the Deacons Union of Danville and Vicinity and the American Legion Post No. 29.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, James A. Cunningham of Baltimore and Ernest E. Glass II of Burlington, N.C.; two daughters, Rosemary Macklin of Danville and Jacqueline Glass of Silver Springs, Md.; two brothers, Wallace Macklin of Salem and Paul Macklin of Baltimore; and two sisters, Helen Tisdale of East Orange, N.J., and Ruth Powell of Baltimore.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday from High Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerome Morris. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The body may be viewed 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

Roberta Watson
Roberta Ann Elliott Watson, 68, 1333 Westover Drive, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 12, 1929, in Ocean Side, Long Island, N.Y., she was a daughter of Gordon Elliott and Margaret H. Elliott.
She was married
to Robert H. Watson, who died Jan. 24, 1987.
She was a member of Amateur Radio Club of Danville.
She is survived by a daughter, Lois Kirkwood of Mount Pocono, Pa.; a son, Gordon E. Watson of Danville; a brother, Irwin Elliott of Haupague, Long Island; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Larry G. Hill.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Earl Thurman, 223 Belaire Drive.
Kathleen Widdifield
Kathleen Megginson Widdifield, 66, 170 Beach Ave., died Thursday, June 5, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following four months of declining health. She had been in the hospital for a week.
Born Nov. 14, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charles Edward Megginson and Nellie George Megginson.
On Dec. 31, 1949, she was married
to Clarence V. Widdifield, who survives.
She spent her entire life in Danville and the Westover Hills community.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc. in the No. 4-A Weave Room.
She attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Everette Michael Widdifield of the residence and Van Martin Widdifield of Danville; two daughters, Kitty W. Francis of Brosville and Donna W. Davis of Danville; a brother, Maynard J. Megginson of Keeling; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
