Davis, Wytheville; half-sisters, Lissie Mae Brown, Francis Sawyers, Shelby Edwards all of Galax; Minnie Lee Cox, Reidsville, NC; half-brothers, James Bowers and Samuel Bowers both of Galax; Hobert Bowers, Seat Pleasant, MD. Graveside service was Mar. 25, 2004 at 2 p.m. at George Lineberry Cemetery. Rev. Fred Jennings and Rev. Gerald Lintecum officiated.
Callie Mae Butcher
Callie Mae Butcher, 81, of Galax, died Mar. 24, 2004 at Twin County Regional Hospital. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Diane Butcher, Mike and Becky Butcher all of Galax; one grandson, two great grandchildren. Funeral was Mar. 26, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. Rev. Ted Barlett officiated. Interment was in McKenzie Cemetery.
James Edward Carroll
Mr. James Edward Carroll, of Frederick, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was 74 years old. Born October 11, 1929, in Hillsville, VA, he was the son of the late Early E. and Della Carroll. Mr. Carroll is survived by a sister, Nancy Bomango of Frederick; a nephew, Michael Bomango, also of Frederick; a niece, Toni Phebus and her husband, John of Buckeystown, niece Judy Sorrentino and her son Justin, and many loving cousins in Virginia. Friends called Sunday, March 28, 2004, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorials Gardens, 9501 US Route 15N. in Frederick, where funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 29, 2004. Interment with military honors followed in the Veterans Garden at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were by Resthaven Funeral Services, Skkot Cody P. A. in Frederick.

Dean C. Hash, 94, of Galax, died Mar. 24, 2004 at Blue Ridge Health and Rehab Center. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and L. D. Galyean, Galax; sons and daughters-in-law, Claude and Alene Hash, Scott and Jama Hash all of Galax; sisters, Rose Scott, Mocksville, NC; Mary Anderson, DE; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren. Funeral was Mar. 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn Chapel. Rev. Joe Arnold officiated. Interment was in Monta Vista Mausoleum.

Luke White Hodge, 71, of Galax, died Mar. 27, 2004 at Twin County Regional Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Helen Redd Hodge, Galax; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Howard Largen, King, NC; Lisa and Irvin Myers, Mocksville, NC; Janet and Joe Gardner, Woodlawn; brother, Wade Hodge, Galax; sister, Minnie Vaughan, Woodlawn; four grandchildren. Funeral was Mar. 29, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Bishops Chapel United Methodist Church. Rev. Jimmy Harmon and Rev. Camet Spivey officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bishops Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Obedia Winesett Littreal, 90, of Galax, died Mar. 29, 2004 at Waddell Nursing Home. She is survived by four sisters, Margie W. Lundy, Galax; Helen W. Newman, Hillsville; Mary Lee W. Combs, Fayetteville, NC; June W. Sumner, Santee, SC. Graveside service will be Mar. 31, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the Coulson Church of the Brethren Cemetery. Rev. Carl Bean, Russell Payne and Rev. Mark Kilbourne will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the First Christian Church in Galax or the the Coulson Church of the Brethren.
Essie East Arrington Martin
Ms. Essie East Arrington Martin, age 88, died on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born September 19, 1915 in Surry County. Her parents were the late Rufus Henry and Nina Pearl Arrington East. Ms. Martin was retired from the Bassett and Walker Corporation in Hillsville, Virginia and resided at ther home at 1654 Reeves Mill Road in Mt. Airy. She was a member of the Welcome Baptist Church. Ms. Essie Martin is survived by six loving children. Three daughters and sons-in-law, Ethelene and Tom Edwards of Mt. Airy; Barbara and Jim Edmiston of Asheville; Hilda and Alan Bowen of Mt. Airy; and three sons and daughters-in-law; Harvey and Jean Arrington of Mt. Airy; Jack and Tish Arrington of Mt. Airy; and Dennis and Lynn Arrington of Mt. Airy. Her survivors include a sister, Josephine Haymore of Mt. Airy and thirteen grandchildren, Kathy Moody, Phil Arrington, Mitzi Dease, Mark Edwards, Donna Adams, Darius Collins, Joe Cooke, Lisa Mize, Amy Thompson, Lynn Moore, Amy Pardue, Josh Arrington, and Daniel Arrington. Twenty one great grandchildren, Nicole Moody, Wade Moody, Meredith Moody, Matt Mullen, Trip Arrington, Will Arrington, Zachary Dease, Tyler Dease, Rona Hawks, Maggie Collins, Jacob Cooke, Seth Cooke, Tonya Goldsberry, Morgan Brooks, Cory Thompson, Catlyn Thompson, Nicole Moore, Renee' McCreary, Tyler Pardue, Austin Pardue, Caleb Arrington, and one great great grandchild, Emma Hawks. In addition to her parents, Ms. Martin was preceded in death by four sisters, Vera East, Versie Jessup, Ilene Lytle and Rada Collins. The family received friends Friday night, March 26, 2004 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. Funeral services were Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Indian Grove Baptist Church. Services were conducted by Rev. Tommy Floyd and members of Essie's family. Burial followed in the Indian Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Indian Grove Cemetery, 488 Indian Grove Church Road, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to offer special thanks to Essie's dear friend, Dolly Williams and to an exceptional care giver, Linda Black.

Ila Mae Stilwell, age 78, of Pulaski, VA passed away Friday, March 26, 2004 at the home of her son. Born June 16, 1925 in Wythe County, she was the daughter of the late Haymon & Ada Mae Swecker. She was alo preceded in death by her husband, James Quinn Stilwell, two brothers, Harold Lee Swecker and Carl Swecker, two sisters, Margaret Burnett and Shirley Dicker. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Dawn) and George D. Dearman, Meridian, MS; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Linda Stilwell, Claytor Lake; Guy Nelson and Fern Stilwell, Roanoke; six grandchildren, James D. and Donna Dearman, Christine S. Carico, Delmer M. and Shelly Charles, Heidi and Rodney Dalton, James A. and Jessica Charles and Andrea Stilwell; seven great grandchildren, James D. Dearman, William K. Holton, Kayla M. Dearman, Ryan A. Smith, Eric Atkins, Shonda M. Carico and Hunter N. Charles. Brothers, Thomas "Tom" Swecker, Barren Springs; James W. Swecker, Vinton; Muncy R. Swecker, Pulaski; sisters, Opal Friend, Pulaski; Gladys Nester, Short Pump; Julia Semones, Pulaski; Mildred "Millie" Mitchem, Galax. Funeral was Monday, March 29, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Rev. Johnny Howlett and Rev. L. J. Rippey officiated. Interment followed in Liberty Hill Cemetery, Carroll County. The family received friends Sunday, March 28, 2004 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski handled the arrangements. Earnest Grant Taylor
Mr. Earnest Grant Taylor, age 75 , of 104 Country Place Road, Cana, VA, husband of Mary Louise Taylor, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004, at his home. Mr. Taylor was born October 25, 1928, in Somerset County, PA, to the late James Taylor, Sr. and Mary Yolder Taylor. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Vietnam Conflict, and was a retired carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Taylor of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Richard Swartswalter of Caimbrook, PA; a step daughter and spouse, Linda and John Baldwin of Maryland; three granddaughters; a great granddaughter; and a brother and sister-in-law, James Taylor, Jr. and Josephine Taylor of Central City, PA. There will not be a formal visitation or a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be make to the American Cancer Society, 500 East Morehead Street, Suite 2211, Charlotte, NC 28202. Moody Funeral Services of Mount Airy served the Taylor family.

Funeral was Mar. 28, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Shiloh United Methodist Church. Rev. Terri Gregory and Rev. Ray Bolen offficiated. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery.

Myrtle Lee Hardy Brown, 90, of Ivanhoe, died Apr. 24, 2004 at Twin County Regional Hospital. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey and Hobart Stoots, Mantua, OH; Barbara Ann Brown, Galax; Sue and Toney Bedwell, Hillsville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Howard Brown, M. H. and Betty Brown, all of Ivanhoe; Herbert, Jr. and Doris Brown, Galax; one great granddaughter, one sister, Ocie Mabe, Austinville; twenty four grandchildren; forty two great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Funeral services was Apr. 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church, Ivanhoe. The Rev. John Matthews and Rev. Rance Edwards officiated. Interment followed in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
