Bert Morrison
MARTINSVILLE - Staff Sgt. Bert Alexander Morrison, retired, 38, 5023 Prince Valiant, San Antonio, Texas, died Friday, June 13, 1997, in San Antonio.
A native of Martinsville, he was a son of Phyllis Simmons and James Morris Sr., who survive.
He was married
to Loretta W. Wilson, who survives.
He graduated from Laurel Park High School in Henry County.
During Desert Storm, he served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, his mother of Winston-Salem, N.C., and his father of Martinsville, survivors include two daughters, Nykisha Morrison and Alicia Morrison, both of the residence; two brothers, James Morrison Jr. of Radcliff, Ky., and Walter Simmons of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Georgia Hodnett of Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, and Phyllis Scales and Nakisha Simmons, both of Winston-Salem; his mother-in-law, Vastina Wilson of Philadelphia; six brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; six aunts; and four uncles.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Danville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Wilson, Meadow Road, Eden, N.C.

Shirley Tuck
Shirley Dix Tuck, 60, 210 Slaughter Ave., in the Mount Hermon community, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, in her residence. She had been in declining health since 1991.
Born Jan. 13, 1937, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Hurley Dix and Lottie Weadon Dix.
On April 21, 1955, she was married
to Carl Allen Tuck Sr., who survives.
She had been living in the Danville area for the past 50 years.
She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Tuck Adkins of Danville; a son, Carl Allen Tuck Jr. of Danville; four sisters, Catherine Wood, Nancy Davis and Betty Watson, all of Danville, and Virginia Poteat of Reidsville, N.C.; four brothers, William Dix of Providence, N.C., Mollay Dix of Nebraska, and Thomas Dix and Elwood Dix, both of Danville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Ann Tuck, who died in 1982, and a sister, Margaret Adkins, who died in 1978.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert Vermillion. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Thelma Burton
ALTAVISTA - Thelma Dodson Richardson Burton, 91, died Thursday, June 19, 1997, in Autumn Care of Altavista.
Born April 4, 1906, in Chatham, she was a daughter of Lacy Calloway and Elizabeth Davis Dodson.
She was first married
to Kent D. Richardson, who predeceased her. She was later married
to James Edward Burton Jr., who survives.
She attended Pittsylvania County public schools and graduated from Garfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, D.C.
She was employed as a nurse in Altavista and Richmond for many years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Altavista.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a stepson, J. Edward Burton III of Altavista; and a brother, Joseph C. Dodson of Columbia, S.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park in Danville by the Rev. Kirby Smith.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her stepson, 1408 Bedford Ave., Altavista.

Madge Chattin
RINGGOLD - Madge Gleaton Chattin, 63, 3574 South Boston Road, died Thursday, June 19, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following two years of declining health. She had been in the hospital for the past four days.
Born Feb. 10, 1934, in Blakely, Ga., she was a daughter of Gaston R. Gleaton and Julia Alston Gleaton.
On June 27, 1953, she was married
to Harold "Doc" Delmount Chattin Sr., who died Oct. 13, 1994.
She spent most of her life in Pittsylvania County, where she worked with Dan River Inc. for several years. Before her health began to fail, she was employed by Harris Teeter in the bakery department.
She was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Laura C. Davis of Danville; a son, Harold "Hal" D. Chattin Jr. of Danville; two sisters, Pat G. Slayton of Sutherlin and Elise G. Moore of Panama City, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Gaston R. Gleaton Jr.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jimmy L. Burks.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 507 Bermuda Road, Danville, off Route 58 East.
Edward Hall
BEDFORD - Edward Franklin Hall, 63, 1216 Oakwood St., died Thursday, June 19, 1997, in Avante at Lynchburg.
Born May 12, 1934, in Campbell County, he was a son of Henry and Ida Hall.
He was married
to Mildred Nelms Hall, who survives.
He was employed by Wal-Mart in Roanoke and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Teresa Hall of Danville and Melanie H. Roach of Phenix; three brothers, Carlton Hall of Graham, N.C., Herbert Hall of Siler City, N.C., and Robert Hall of Asheboro, N.C.; and four sisters, Anna Jackson of Altavista, Barbara Dalton of Gretna, Ruth Seal of Dutton and Elsie Burns of Rockingham, N.C.
He was predeceased by a brother, James Hall, and a sister, Linda Story.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Central Baptist Church by Dr. R. James Roger. Burial will be in Altavista Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Finch & Finch Funeral Home of Altavista, and other times at the residence of a sister, Anna Jackson, 1207 Elson St., Altavista.
Lydia Harvey
A memorial service for Lydia Gaver Harvey, 139 Fenton Place, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. John LeGault.
She died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at her residence.
Born Sept. 3, 1918, in Danville, she was a daughter of Clayton Daniel Gaver and Ruth Clendenning Gaver.
She was a 1940 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College.
She was married
to Reuben C. Harvey, who predeceased her.
She was formerly a faculty member and administrator at Stratford Hall and Stratford College, and she had served as executive director of the Womack Foundation.
From 1976 to 1979, she was executive director of the Danville YWCA, and she was an honorary life member of the board of directors of the YWCA.
In 1981, she was the recipient of the Jane Harris Memorial Award for outstanding service to the community and to humanity.
She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where she had formerly served on the administrative board and the council on ministries. At the time of her death, she was the vice chairwoman of the board of trustees for the church.
She was a member of the Wednesday Club, Friends of the Danville Public Library and other civic organizations.
She is survived by two sons, Daniel Gaver Harvey of New York, and Edward Peyton Harvey and his wife, Michele Harvey, of Spartanburg, S.C.; and by two grandchildren, Christopher Harvey and Kathryn Harvey.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Oswald Moore
RINGGOLD - Oswald McKinley Moore, 67, 5355 Tom Fork Road, died Monday, June 16, 1997, in his residence.
Born Sept. 12, 1929, in Halifax, he was a son of Leloen Moore and Roberta Chaney Moore.
He was married
to Ruby Richardson Moore, who predeceased him.
He was a member of United States Army 49th Airborne Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Infantry Division, of Camp Beckingridge, Ky.
He was also a member of White Oak Missionary Baptist Church in Sutherlin.
He is survived by a daughter, Delores I. Henry of the residence.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from White Oak Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

William Bridgen
William C. Bridgen, 89, 125 Cottonwood Lane, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997.
He was born July 17, 1908, in Pennsylvania.
He was married
to Iola Gae, who survives.
He had been affiliated with Patrick Daly and Danville Memorial Gardens since 1964.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, William Barry Bridgen of Danville; three daughters, Beverly Stowe of Greensboro, N.C., Wannel Balint of Raleigh, N.C., and Dawn Bridgen Martin of Charlottesville; a sister, Hilda Reeves of New Kensington, Pa., a brother, Wilber Bridgen of New Kensington; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
At his request, Bridgen's body has been donated for anatomical research.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in the mausoleum chapel at Danville Memorial Gardens on 58 West.
