Evelyn Hardy
Evelyn Gammon Hardy, 69, of 103 Cambridge Drive, died at 12:25 a.m. Sunday, June 22, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for 14 months.
Born July 30, 1927, in Danville, she was the daughter of Geroge Daniel Gammon and Viola Mize Gammon.
She spent most of her life in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Inc., where she had worked in No. 8 inspection.
On Dec. 21, 1942, she was married
to James Luther Hardy, who survives.
She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church and the Par-T-Club of Surry Hills.
In addtion to her husband of the residence, survivors include four sons, Sanford Roy Hardy and Glenn Russell Hardy, both of Danville, James Gordon Hardy of Eden, N.C., and Irvin "Red" Hardy of Chatham; and two daughters, Starlette Rose Hardy and Vickie Barker, both of Danville; five brothers, Carlton Nathaniel Gammon of Halifax, Julian Mason Gammon of Chester, Tony Emerson Gammon, Curtis Sanford Gammon and Carson "Benny" Gammon all of Danville; and three sisters, Margaret Ann Dalton of Keeling, Cleo Christeen Price of Pelham, N.C., and Myrtle Elizabeth Hutson of Danville; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, James Daniel Gammon and Paul Elwood Gammon.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Roger L. Ewing and the Rev. Matthew Pacifico. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times will be at the residence.
Carrie Adkins
RINGGOLD - Carrie Hoskins Adkins, 84, 168 Clark St., died Monday, June 23, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 29, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John H. Hoskins and Rosa Lee Deboe Hoskins.
She was married
to Floyd W. Adkins, who died Sept. 11, 1968.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past two years.
She was also of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara A. Walker of Ringgold and Beatrice A. Dalton of Danville; a son, Larry W. Adkins of Danville; two brothers, Otha Hoskins of Pelham, N.C., and Howard Hoskins of Halifax; two sisters, Stella H. Mobley and Neva H. Davis, both of Danville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Page Adkins.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Lee VonEime and the Rev. Tim Pruitt. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a granddaughter, Ronda Tomlinson, 405 Gilbert Court, off of Airport Drive.
Hubert Hall
Hubert Langford Hall, 83, 405 Parkland Drive, died Monday, June 23, 1997, in his residence.
Born March 10, 1914, in Danville, he was a son of William Crispin Hall and Maude Carter Hall.
On Feb. 8, 1958, he was married
to Evelyn McCarty Hall, who died Jan. 12, 1995.
He was a member of West Main Christian Church.
He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 1097 and VFW Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a supervisor in the No. 4 Dress Room at Dan River Inc.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Central Europe, the Rhineland and the Po Valley Campaigns. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars and the American Defense Service Medal.
Survivors include two sisters, Barbara H. Sater of Danville and Frances H. Frink of Cary, N.C.; and two stepsons, Jackie K. McCarty Sr. of Dry Fork and Leroy I. McCarty of Brosville.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Helen H. Booker.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. Daryl Joyce. Military rites will be given by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Walter Hunt
GRETNA - Walter Garvice Hunt, 82, formerly of Gretna, died Monday, June 23, 1997, in Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville.
Born Sept. 26, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Walter Hunt and Inez Hunt.
He was a member of West End Church of Christ and a retired farmer.
He is survived by a brother, Thelbert Hunt of Monmouth Junction, N.J., and a sister, Mrs. Willie Holley of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sheva Church of Christ cemetery by the Rev. Randy Parker.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in Gretna.
Benjamin Klaff
Benjamin Bernard Klaff, 75, 193 Arnett Blvd., died Monday, June 23, 1997, in his residence, following six months of declining health.
Born Dec. 28, 1921, in Baltimore, he was a son of Michael Klaff and Sarah Famlant Klaff.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was employed as a bookkeeper for Klaff Scrap Iron and Metal until he retired in 1985.
He was married
to Bessie Kravitz Klaff, who survives.
He was a member of Temple Beth Sholom.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Louis Michael Klaff of Glendale, Ariz., and Gene H. Klaff of Danville; a brother, Julian Klaff of Baltimore; two sisters, Goldie Kaplan of Baltimore and Mary Halperin of Danville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Sol Levinson Funeral Home in Baltimore. Burial will be in United Hebrew cemetery in Baltimore.
The family will return home from Baltimore after 8 p.m. Thursday night.

William Lewis III
DANVILLE, KY. - William Baskerville Lewis III, 74, formerly of Danville, Va., died Saturday, June 21, 1997, in Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, Ky.
He was married
to Marion Guthrie Lewis, who survives.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Danville, Va.
He attended Virginia Military Institute and graduated from the University of Kentucky.
In addition to his wife of Danville, Ky., survivors include two stepsons, Richard G. Weissinger of Jamestown, Ky., and David Lee Weissinger of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Betty Deanne Lawson of Danville, Ky.; a brother, Dr. Benjamin W. Lewis of Greenville, S.C.; and a sister, Isabel Lewis Scott of Covington, La.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Bellevue cemetery in Danville, Ky., by Dr. Norman Hagley.
The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home in Danville, Ky.
Walter Marshall
Walter Royce Marshall, 87, 239 Arnett Blvd., died Monday, June 23, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following 10 years of declining health.
Born Feb. 15, 1910, in Browning, Vt., he was a son of Frank R. Marshall and Nettie Hill Marshall.
On Jan. 4, 1958, he was married
to Alice Ferrell Marshall, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the New England states and in Danville. He had been a resident of the nursing home for four months.
He was employed by Saco Lowell Machine Co. for many years.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church. He was also a member of Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122, receiving his 50-year pin in 1995.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include three sons, Frank R. Marshall of Springfield, Mass., Richard G. Marshall of Ocala, Fla., and Walter R. Marshall of California; a stepson, C. Spencer Allen of New Bern, N.C.; a brother, Leslie Marshall of Waterford, Vt.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Michael Campbell and the Rev. Kenneth Durham. Masonic rites will be conducted by Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 122.

Grace Childress
SOUTH BOSTON - Grace Coates Childress, 76, of Rosehill Apartments, died Monday, June 23, 1997, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 27, 1921, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Clem Edward Coates and Elsie Shelton Coates.
She was married
to Samuel Tune Childress, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Franklin of Crystal Hill; two sons, Maynard Childress of South Boston and Winfred Childress of Nathalie; four sisters, Ada Lloyd and Peggy Clark, both of Nathalie, Frances Conner of Halifax and Joan Davis of Danville; two brothers, Clarence Coates of South Boston and Leroy Coates of Halifax; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Wesley Childress.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Powell Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston by the Rev. Raymond Quick. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Thomas "Boots" Dameron
GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Thomas Clyde "Boots" Dameron, 71, died Monday, June 23, 1997, in his residence.
Born April 16, 1926, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Thomas Clyde Dameron and Ada Phillips Dameron.
He was married
to Nancy Wilson Dameron, who survives.
He grew up in Danville and graduated from George Washington High School. He attended Virginia Tech and Averett College.
He served in the Army with the occupation forces in Japan after World War II.
He owned and operated T.C. Dameron Plumbing & Heating until retiring and moving to Georgetown in January 1988. He was also a professional musician and was the leader of the Tommy Dameron Orchestra for many years.
He attended Georgetown Presbyterian Church.
He was a member of The Ribbon Club and past president of the Wedgefield Plantation Homeowner Association.
In addition to his wife of Georgetown, survivors include four daughters, Betty Dameron of Ontario, Canada, Linda D. Connor of Gainesville, Ga., Leigh Jackson of West Hollywood, Calif., and Sally Jackson of Richmond, Va.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday from Georgetown Presbyterian Church by the Rev. J. Ben Sloan.
