Alonza 'Tom' White
Alonza Thomas "Tom" White, 89, 156 Lovelace Drive, died Saturday, June 21, 1997, in his residence.
Born Dec. 28, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Robert White and Ada Coles White.
He was a member of Loyal Baptist Church, where he served as trustee and treasurer.
He was a member of Danville Royal Masonic Lodge and Morning Star Elks Lodge.
Survivors include two sons, J.T. White and Herman White, both of New York; two daughters, Terry Florence of Danville and Antricilla Howard of Hampton; a brother, Stewart White of New York; four sisters, Pearl W. Manns of Danville, and Selma W. Torrain, Sally Coleman and Mattie Domlinson, all of New York; and 19 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Loyal Baptist Church by the Rev. Lavelle Maxwell. Burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Lizzie Davis
Lizzie Fountain Davis, 91, 129 Vann St., died Sunday, June 22, 1997 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Keysville.
Born July 22, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Jacob Fountain and Rosa Farmer Fountain.
She was married
to Clarence Davis Sr., who predeceased her.
Survivors include two sons, Clarence Davis Jr. and William Davis, both of Danville; and several grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will be held at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, Clarence Davis Jr., 129 Vann St.
Arvin 'Pete' English
SANDY LEVEL - Arvin "Pete" English, 58, 11-S St., Washington, D.C., and formerly of Sandy Level, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, in Washington Hospital Center.
Born Jan. 15, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Elizabeth Poindexter, who survives, and Tom Bennett.
He was employed by Gallaudett University as a groundskeeper.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother of Roanoke, survivors include three sons, Walter L. Jones of Washington, D.C., David Theodore Jones of Roanoke and Leonard Arvin Berger of Pittsville; a daughter, Loretta English of Washington, D.C.; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by a brother, Elsa English.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Gretna by the Rev. Clarence Musgrove. Burial will be in the Mease cemetery in Sandy Level.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Willie Walker, 517 Zion Road, Gretna.
Charlie Fuller
Charlie Lee Fuller, 67, 205 Parrish Road, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, in The Stratford Health Care Center, following several years of declining health.
Born March 8, 1930, in Danville, he was a son of Allie Lee Fuller and Eston Mays Fuller.
He was married
to Margie Dix Fuller, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville, and had been a resident at The Stratford Health Care Center for the last four months.
He was retired from the Danville Police Department as a patrolman with 23 years of service. After retirement, he worked as a court security officer with the U.S. Marshal's Office for seven years.
He was a member of Oak Grove Christian Church in Chatham. He was a member of the Danville Elk's Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Police, and a lifetime honorary member of the Danville Life Saving Crew.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Debra F. Headley of Blairs; two sons, Allie Lee Fuller of Chesterfield, Mich., and Daniel Ray Fuller of the residence; two stepsons, Ronald L. Root of Orlando, Fla., and Larry Wayne Root of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Lou F. Sours of Chatham and Melva F. Davis of Montross; two brothers, Frank B. Fuller of Chatham and Joe Daniel Fuller of High Point, N.C.; one grandchild; and five stepgrandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Edward Fuller.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Oak Grove Christian Church by the Rev. Cecil Davis. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Elvedge 'E.M.' Owen
Elvedge "E.M." Owen, 69, 709 Willow Briar Lane, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at his residence, following a year of declining health.
Born April 1, 1928, in the Brosville, he was a son of Charlie Albert Owen and Annie Mae Bray Owen.
On Oct. 5, 1962, he was married
to Mary L. Thompson Owen, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Brosville community, where he was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
He was retired from the American Furniture Company in Martinsville after 18 years of service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Lois Snead of Danville; a sister, Pauline Stout of Cascade; a brother, Henry Gaston Owen of Cascade; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. J.B. Baldridge. Burial will be held at the Owen Family cemetery next to the residence.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Marguerite Schwarz
Marguerite Aravilla Vaughn Schwarz, 89, Holiday Village, Apartment No. 205, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, where she had been a resident for less than a month.
She was born Aug. 9, 1907, in Omaha, Neb.
She was of the Presbyterian faith.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as corporate secretary for Don J. McMurray Co., mortgage bankers in Omaha for 20 years.
She was a member of the women's division of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce and a member of Omaha Real Estate Board.
She was listed in Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in the Midwest and was a member of the International Platform Association.
She moved to Danville in 1977 and was one of the first tenants of Holiday Village. She was editor of the Holiday Village Calendar for 10 years. She also organized the Holiday Village Breakfast Club and served as its hostess during the first year.
She is survived by a son, William "Bill" Updike of Danville; and a half-sister, Mary E. Tindal of Cincinnati.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Evelyn, in 1951, and by her husband, William H., in 1976.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Holiday Village, 222 Courtland St., by Dr. William B. Dozier. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery family plot in Omaha.
The family will receive friends 7-8 Friday at Holiday Village.

Inez Gunn
Inez Waddell Gunn, 84, 1211 Halifax Road, died Thursday morning, June 26, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 26, 1912 in Glenwood, she was a daughter of Samuel Thomas Waddell Jr. and Myrtle Edwards Waddell.
She was married
to Holland Watlington Gunn, who died Oct. 31, 1983.
She spent her entire life in Danville and Glenwood, where she was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church and the Suzanna Wesley Sunday School Class, in which she was active for many years.
Survivors include a son, Richard H. Gunn of the residence; a brother, Samuel T. Waddell of Midlothian; two sisters, Doris W. Smith of Durham, N.C., and Frances W. Camden of Charlottesville; and one grandchild.
The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb and the Rev. Rebecca Yow.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Kathleen Redeema Cunningham Tapley, 94, died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 4, 1902 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Cunningham Sr. and Elvira Brandon Cunningham.
She was married
to Howard Tapley, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a son, Roosevelt Cunningham of Martinsville; 10 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Ringgold by the Rev. Howard Graves Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
