Evelyn Reese
Evelyn Maxwell Reese, 87, 721 Southhampton Ave., died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at her residence. She had been declining in health for six months.
Born June 5, 1910, in Concord, N.C., she was the daughter of Cletus and Suny Helms Maxwell.
She had lived in Danville since 1958.
She was married
to John Reese, who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was a sitter for the Danville Regional Medical Center.
She is survived by one daughter, Jeanie Reese Kluttz of Concord; one sister, Lena Mills of Concord; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, John Wayne Reese; and one daughter, Patsy Godfry.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Calvin Hines.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home 7-8:30 tonight and other times at the residence.
Hazel Owens
Hazel Smith Owens, 75, of 765 Oakland Drive, died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at her residence after a brief illness.
Born Jan. 12, 1922, in Spray, N.C., she was the daughter of Criss M. Smith and Marandy Kelly Smith.
She retired from Peoples Drug Store, where she had worked as a salesperson.
She spent most of her life in Alexandria, and moved to Danville 20 years ago.
Survivors include a son, William Douglas Neely of Haymarket; two sisters, Kathryn Collins of Danville and Doris Murphy of California; two brothers, Buford Smith of San Antonio, Texas, and Criss Smith of East Bend, N.C.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. W.L. Wade. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Ruby Ragle
Ruby Irby Ragle, 70, of 205 Englewood Lane, died Saturday night at her residence. She had been in declining health for two years.
Born April 26, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Ell Irby and Nannie Laura Bell Dalton Irby.
She was a homemaker and spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
She was married
to Theodore Robert Ragle, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Nancy L. Ragle Wisto of Ramona, Calif.; two brothers, Floyd Irby of Danville and Claude Irby of Chesapeake; two sisters, Hattie Rinko of Hurt and Irene Crowder of Leasburg, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. M. Dana Hunt and Jim Fermin.
Interment will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times will be at the residence.
John Williams Sr.
John Henry Williams Sr., 75, of 253 West Woodlawn Drive, died Sunday, July 6, 1997, at his home. He had been in declining health for two years.
Born July 11, 1921, in Grayson County, he was the son of George S. Williams and Pearl Shupe Williams.
He moved to Danville in 1961 from Fries and worked in the Riverside Division machine shop at Dan River Inc. until his retirement.
He was also a carpenter and a member of Steven's Creek United Methodist Church, Fries.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
On Dec. 12, 1941, he was married
to Forrest Stanley Williams, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Carolyn W. Garrett of Danville; a son, John H. "Johnny" Williams Jr. of Danville; two brothers, William S. Williams of Cascade and Joe Williams of Ivanhoe; five sisters, Mary W. Setliff of Danville, Pauline W. Boyer of Dublin, Grace W. Litteral of Bristol, Tenn., Donna W. Akers of Fries, and Louise W. Rich of Greensboro, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Reid Williams, Paris Williams and Everette Williams.
The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans and the Rev. Bufford Lanter.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times will be at the residence.
James Cobbs Sr.
James Pempleton Cobbs Sr., 84, of 450 Piney Forest Road, died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born May 15, 1913, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Leslie Rice Cobbs.
Survivors include three daughters, Kay Frances Barksdale of Cincinnati, and Caroline E. Cobbs and Rosa Marie Cobbs, both of Bronx, N.Y.; a son, James Cobbs Jr. of Bronx, N.Y.; a sister, Rubelle Burrell of Danville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth. Interment
will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Rubelle Burrell, 1192 South Main St.
Hannah Leonhardt
Dr. Hannah Veigel Leonhardt, 73, of 412 Sutherlin Place, died Monday morning, July 7, 1997, at her summer residence in Clarksville.
Born May 30, 1924, in Heilbronn, Germany, she was the daughter of Carl Veigel and Julie Schwilk Veigel.
She was married
to Dr. Kurt O. Leonhardt, who died in 1970.
She received her doctorate in medicine from Tuebingen University in Germany, and specialized in pathology at Duke University Medical Center in the early 1970s.
She had been a resident of Danville since 1955.
She was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Markus V. Leonhardt of Danville and Michael K. Leonhardt of Washington, D.C.; and two brothers, Gottholld Veigel and Herbert Veigel, both of Germany.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Alphonso Craft
BALTIMORE - Alphonso Craft, 46, of 2100 Calvert St., died Saturday, July 5, 1997, in Mercy Hospital, Baltimore.
Born Nov. 4, 1950, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Cornelius Craft and Florence C. Craft, who survive.
He was married
to Lucretia Scott Craft, who predeceased him.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his parents of Chatham, Va., survivors include a son, Troy Craft of Baltimore; four daughters, Tanynette Craft, Lucretia Craft, Joi Craft and Toi Craft, all of Baltimore; four stepsons, Walter Scott, Wayne Scott, George Scott, and Antoine Scott, all of Baltimore; five brothers, Willie H. Craft and Jester Craft, both of Chatham, and Cornelius Craft Jr. and Jesse Craft, both of Danville, Va., and Lester Craft of Washington, D.C.; and five sisters, Thelma R. Craft and Pattie J. Craft, both of Chatham, and Josephine Craft and Aletha Craft, both of New Jersey, and Peggy L. Craft of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Cherrystone Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd O. Jones. Burial will be in the Craft Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his parents, 6662 Moses Mill Road, Chatham, Va.

'Pete' Jeremiah Deshazor
"Pete" Jeremiah Deshazor, 59, of 144 Northern Drive, died Sunday, July 6, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 30, 1937, in Danville, he was a son of Leroy Deshazor and Belle Wilson Deshazor
In addition to his mother of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Wanda Hayes of Danville; three sisters, Marie Wimbush of Danville, Pernell Hollis of New Jersey, and Sara Watkins of Philadelphia; a brother, Clarence Deshazor of Danville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. Ernest Barksdale. Interment
will be held at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence, and also at the residence of his daughter, Wanda Hayes, 638 Rosemary Lane.
Roosevelt Pannell Sr.
Roosevelt Pannell Sr., 54, of 616 Jefferson St., died Monday, July 7, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 27, 1942, in Danville, he was a son of Willie Pannell and Rachel Holiness Pannell.
He was married
to Geraldine N. Pannell, who survives.
He was a hourly employee of APAC Virginia.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include three sons, Roosevelt Pannell Jr, Antonio L. Pannell, and James R. Pannell, all of Danville; two brothers, Willie G. Pannell of New York and Joe L. Pannell of Danville; two sisters, Ethel Thomas and Callie Brandon, both of Danville; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill cemetery by the Rev. Rudolph Cabell. The family is to meet at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
The remains can be viewed 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Ethel Thomas, 610 Jefferson St.
Alberta Walker
CASCADE - Alberta Williams Walker, 61, of 1437 Cascade Road, died Sunday, July 6, 1997.
She was married
to Sanford Walker, who survives.
She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Cascade.
She was a former beautician.
In addition to her mother, Almeda Williams of the residence and her husband of Baltimore, survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Bell of Reidsville, N.C., and Shirley Johnson of Roanoke; three sons, William Walker of Silverdale, Wash., Warren Walker of Eden, N.C., and Anthony Walker of Laurel, Md.; four brothers, Grover Williams and Joseph Williams, both of Plainville, N.J., and Freddie Williams of Axton, and Charles Williams of Cascade; and thirteen sisters, Nannie Strange of Danville, Leona Hairston, Shirley Strange, Martha Wilson, Virginia Ingram, and Donna Adams, all of Cascade, Annie Best of Fort Washington, Md., and Mary Wytch of Atlanta, Catherine Dillard of Eden, N.C., and Patti Giles and Josephine Stockton, both Martinsville, Rosetta Keen of Axton, and Wanda Nowlin of Corpus Christi, Texas.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. John W. Tinsley. Burial will be held at Danville Memorial Garden.
