Leroy Kelly
BLAIRS - Leroy Kelly, 55, of 632 Pritchett Lane died Friday, July 11, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 9, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Kelly and Ella Miller Kelly.
He was a farmer.
He was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Gunter of Blairs and Doris Kelly of Chatham; a stepdaughter, Andrea Younger of Chatham; a brother, Herman Kelly of Chatham; four sisters, Mary Lizzie Bennett and Almeda Griffin, both of Danville, and Lelia Younger and Alberta Hairston, both of Blairs; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. G.H. Pass. Burial will be held at Mt. Airy Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Sarah Clark
Sarah "Mama Sarah" Brandon Clark, 68, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at her residence.
Born March 21, 1929, in St. Claire, Ala., she was a daughter of Eddie H. Williams and Deanah M. Williams, who survives.
She was married
to Calvin G. Brandon in 1950, who predeceased her. She was later married
to Robert H. Clark, who predeceased her.
She was educated in the Pittsylvania County schools.
She was a member at New Chapel Baptist Church, which later became Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church.
She served as a church clerk, president of the Deaconess Board, and vice president of the Missionary Society. She was also a secretary of the Senior Choir and a Sunday school teacher.
She was a retired shop stewardess for Lorillard Tobacco Company.
In addition to her mother, survivors include three sons, Larry D. Brandon, Calvin Brandon Jr. and Charlie Brandon, all of Sutherlin; four daughters, Juanita B. Williams and Gloria B. Farmer, both of Sutherlin, and Theresa B. Edmunds and Carolyn B. Edmunds, both of Danville; two stepdaughters, Francis Harris of Wyrndanch, N.Y., and Cynthia Clark of Los Angeles; three sisters, Sallie Pounds and Bernice Plunkett, both of Sutherlin, and Loraine Harris of Milton, N.C.; a brother, Charlie Williams of Sutherlin; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Jesse Evans
BLAIRS - Jesse Terry Evans, 71, 1097 Hunters Lane, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 11, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Andrew Evans and Elsie Hall Evans.
On Nov. 15, 1947, he married
Madie Chattlin Evans, who survives.
He was a self-employed septic tank contractor.
He was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Joan Gregory of Ringgold and Barbara Parker of Sutherlin; a sister, Mary Lou Evans of Blairs; two brothers, Roger Evans of Blairs and Matthew Evans of Dry Fork; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Henry Evans; and two sisters, Emma Hardy and Sarah Lewis.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Mike Hearp. The interment will be in the Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Jean Wickham
RIDGEWAY - Jean Webster Wickham, 63, 1001 Wickersham Road, died Friday, July 11, 1997, at her daughter's residence in Danville.
The daughter of Claude Lee Webster Sr. and Katherine Frazier Webster, she was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Martinsville.
She was married
to Cleo Boyce Wickham, who predeceased her.
She was retired from Henry County School system, where she taught chemistry at Drewery Mason High School and Laurel Park High School.
She was a graduate of Radford University.
She was a member of the Ridgeway United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Amy Taylor Sheridan of Greenville, S.C., Sue Wickham Cumbo of Danville, and Amy Webster Wickham of Ridgeway; a brother, Claude Lee Webster Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday at Mt. View cemetery by the Rev. Ron Mills.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at McKee Funeral Home in Martinsville and at other times at the residence.
William Lawson
William "Lloyd" Lawson, 69, 101 Winfield Place, died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after a four-month decline in health and a 28-day stay at the hospital.
Born March 25, 1928, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of William H. Lawson and Nora Hooker Lawson.
He was married
to Margaret Lydia Forrester Lawson on July 3, 1948.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 221/2 years, serving half of his military tours outside the United States in Vietnam, North Africa, Spain and England.
After retiring 20 years ago, he moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. He moved back to Danville six years ago. He was of the Church of the Brethren Faith and was a member of American Legion Post No. 325. He also served on the board of the Southern Area Agency on Aging.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Patricia Swatyari of Peach Tree City, Ga., and Cindy Lawson of Largo, Fla.; a son, William Jake Lawson of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Lillian Page of Reidsville, N.C.; three brothers, Blane Lawson of Sumpter, S.C., Buddy Lawson of Sanford, Fla., and Clyde Lawson of Smyrna, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Leonard Martin. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park where military honors will be performed by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and at other times they will be at the residence in Sandy Shores.
Aaron Overstreet Sr.
GLADE HILL - Aaron Frederick Overstreet Sr., 75, died Sunday, July 13, 1997.
Born Jan. 1, 1922, he was the son of John Harris Overstreet and Nellie May Walker Overstreet.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post No. 10840 in Penhook.
He was married
to Opal Johnson Overstreet.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the home, include four daughters, Nancy McCrickard of Penhook, and Elizabeth Hazelwood, Joyce Aken and Helen Anderson, all of Rocky Mount; one son, Aaron F. Overstreet Jr. of Rocky Mount; five sisters, Georgia Boothe of Salem, Era Poisson of Connecticut, Gladys Johnson and Leona English, both of Moneta and Betty Martin of Stuart; one brother, Richard Overstreet of Vinton; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Barbara Ellen Overstreet and Edna May Overstreet.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Earl Harrelson and the Rev. Glenn A. McCrickard. Entombment will follow in the Franklin Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Ryland Smith
Ryland Benjamin Smith, 80, of 3560 R&L Smith Drive, Danville, died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in the hospital 13 days.
Born June 7, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Henry Smith and Avery Haymore Smith.
He had lived all his life in Pittsylvania County. He was a retired farmer and a member of Lighthouse Independent Methodist Church.
Smith served three terms on the Pittsylvania County Assessment Board.
On Oct. 23, 1941, he married
Carrie Ellen Payne Smith, who died on Sept. 12, 1993.
Survivors include two sons, David R. Smith and Howard P. Smith, both of Danville; two daughters, Avery S. Wyatt and Patricia S. Hamm, both of Danville; a sister, Ruby S. Samuels of Danville; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. W.L. Wade, the Rev. Jimmy Pruitt and the Rev. Virgil Payne. Interment
will be in Smith Family cemetery at the residence.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
King Tarpley Sr.
King P. Tarpley Sr., 85, 2264 Wyatt Farm Road, Axton, died Friday, July 11, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born March 12, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Frank A. and Lucy King Tarpley Sr.
He was married
to Nina Carter Tarpley, who preceded him in death.
He was a self-employed farmer and a member of Tarpley's Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include seven sons, Joe Louis Tarpley, King P. Tarpley Jr., John W. Tarpley and Kenneth G. Tarpley, all of Axton, Franklin D.R. Tarpley of Richmond, Clay H. Tarpley of Shalamar, Fla., and Roger L. Tarpley of Fort Washington, Md.; and three daughters, Gloria A. Gaston and Lois D. King, both of Sea Pleasant, Md., and Lucy S. Wimbush of Landover, Md.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tarpley's Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert L. Divens Jr. Interment
will be in Tarpley's Family cemetery.
The body may be viewed 4-8 p.m. Monday. The family will be at the residence in Axton.

Maisie Becker
HURT - Maisie Haskins Becker, 90, of Route 1, died Monday, July 14, 1997, at Gretna Health Care Center, Gretna.
Born May 8, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Michael William Haskins and Early Myers.
She was married
to Alfred Becker, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Monta Vista Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Charles J. Becker of Aiken, S.C.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park, Danville, by the Rev. Latta Terry.
