Elizabeth Copeland

Elizabeth F. Copeland, 87, of Stratford House, 1111 Main St., Apartment No. 308, died Monday morning, July 14, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 1, 1910, in Danville, she was a daughter of J.T. Copeland and Callie E. Copeland.

She was a graduate of Longwood College.

She worked at G.W. High School for 43 years as office manager before retiring.

In 1974, she was recognized for her service to the community and named first lady by Beta Sigma Phi International.

She was a former member of Business and Professional Womens Association.

She was lifetime member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Lucile C. Lanier of Danville.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Ashby. A private burial will be held at Greenhill cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Floyd Davis

Floyd F. "Big Floyd" Davis, 57, of 145 Lynch St., died Monday morning, July 14, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following a decline in health.

Born Feb. 29, 1940, in Danville, he was a son of Willie Howard Davis and Verna Moser Davis.

On Jan. 1, 1990, he was married to Beth Wilson Davis, who survives.

He was self-employed in the restaurant business until his health failed.

He was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a stepson, Silas H. Roark III of Danville; two stepdaughters, Karen R. Riddle of Blairs and Dorothy R. Nuckols of Chatham; a brother, Charlie T. Davis of Danville; a sister, Ruby D. Adkins of Gretna; and five step-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Albert Moser. Burial will be held in the Church of God of Prophecy cemetery, Java.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Raymond Hamlett

Raymond Clay "Buck" Hamlett, 64, of 725 Holland Road, died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following several years of declining health.

Born Sept. 26, 1932, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Oliver Stokes Hamlett and Josie Wade Hamlett.

He was married to Frances Patterson Hamlett, who died March 6, 1997.

He lived most of his life on Holland Road.

In his early life, he worked at a shipyard in Newport News. Later, he worked in the carpenter shop at Dan River Mills for a number of years.

He served in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Germany.

He was a member of State Line Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Mabel Webber of Eden, N.C., and Virginia Ricketts and Florence Hamlett, both of Holland Road; and two brothers, the Rev. Billy Hamlett of Clearmont, N.C., and Sam Hamlett of Holland Road.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at State Line Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Wallace, the Rev. Fred Cox, and the Rev. Billy Hamlett. Burial will be held at the Hamlett Family cemetery on Holland Road, where full military honors will be performed by the American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his brother, Sam Hamlett, 522 Holland Road.

Mary Logan

Mary Madgeline Logan, 88, of 407 Industrial Ave., died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 10, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Logan and Maggie Shelton Logan.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Riceville Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Queen James and Frances Taylor, both of Danville; a son, Jessie Logan of Danville; two sisters, Mattie Luck of Java and Cylonia Fitzgerald of Elizabeth, N.J.; a brother, Joseph Logan of Java; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Riceville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Walker. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Faye A. Mays

Faye Deane Anderson Mays, 90, of 113 North Ave., died Monday, July 14, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center following a year of declining health.

Born June 28, 1907, in Danville, she was a daughter of Fred Decator Anderson and Maggie Oakley Anderson.

She was married to Carroll Blair Mays, who died Aug. 3, 1980.

She lived most of her life in Danville, where she had retired from the former Danville Knitting Mills after 20 years of service.

She was a charter member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was active in various church activities.

Survivors include a son, Carroll B. "Butch" Mays Jr. of Chatham; a sister, Anne Elizabeth A. Newman of Deltona, Fla.; a brother, Fred Nathaniel Anderson of San Jose, Calif.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by five sisters, Mable A. Singleton, Carolyn Holland McKenzie, Mary Jones Taylor, Grace All Guyer, and Myra Kary Ashworth.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Richard Cobb and the Rev. Dr. Woodrow Giles. Burial will be held in Mountain View cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her son, 2740 Union Hall School Road, off Route 41.

James 'Dusty' DeBoe Sr.

James "Dusty" H. DeBoe Sr., 83, of 544 Ingram St., died Monday, July 14, 1997, at his residence following two years of declining health.

Born Feb. 2, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Hezekiah DeBoe and Katherine Stovall DeBoe.

On Sept. 22, 1938, he was married to Blanche Fields DeBoe, who survives.

He was in regular attendance at First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he was a member of the men's Bible class.

He played semi-professional baseball, and played with the Danville Leafs.

He was employed by Dan River, Inc. in No. 5 Spin as an supervisor until he retired.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Joel R. DeBoe of Danville and Dr. James DeBoe Jr. of Hillsville; a daughter, Joan D. Laws of Elon College, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe Beck, Dr. James DeBoe, and the Rev. James Laws. Interment icon will be held in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence of his son, Joel R. DeBoe, 149 Millerton Road.

Louis Dibrell Jr.

Louis N. Dibrell Jr., 80, 130 Virginia Avenue, died Tuesday, July 15, 1997, at his residence.

Born Feb. 2, 1917, in Danville, he was the son of Louis N. Dibrell Sr. and Louise Glass Dibrell.

For most of his life, Mr. Dibrell was associated with Dibrell Tobacco Company.

He served on various boards, including Dibrell Brothers, Signet Bank, Piedmont Broadcasting, Stratford College, and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Following his retirement from Dibrell Brothers in 1983, he happily became a strawberry farmer and hay producer in Ruffin, N.C.

Louis Dibrell was a graduate of Danville Military Institute and the University of Virginia.

He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Mr. Dibrell is survived by his wife, Susan Day Dibrell; his sister, Louise D. Webb of Greenville, N.C.; his children, Louis N. Dibrell III of Danville, Alice D. Freeman of Marion, Susan D. Miller of Brewton, Ala., Louise D. Theberge of Gloucester, Henrietta D. Brown of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and 11 grandchildren.

Mr. Dibrell was predeceased by his brother, James Fuller Dibrell of Wilson, N.C.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning, July 17, 1997, at 11 a.m. from Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Ashby. A private interment will be held.

The family will receive visitors at the home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Wayles Harrison Memorial Fund, the Ruffin Fire Department or the charity of your choice.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Farmer

Margaret White Farmer, 52, of 163 White St., died Sunday, July 13, 1997, at The Stratford House.

Born May 15, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Herman White and Ester Willis White, who survives.

She was married to David Farmer, who survives.

She worked for the Danville Public School System at George Washington High School for many years.

In addition to her mother and husband, survivors include a son, David Farmer of Danville; a sister, Evelyn Hobson of Queens, N.Y.; two brothers, John White and Waverly Pounds, both of Danville; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by T.R. Brooks. Interment icon will be held in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Velma Farmer, 202 Swanson St.
