Agnes Anderson

SOUTH BOSTON - Agnes Richardson Anderson, 67, of 1145 Birch-Elmo Road, died Wednesday night, July 16, 1997, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Born June 14, 1930, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Samuel and Emma V. Richardson.

She was married to William Anderson, who survives.

She retired from Halifax County School systems after 30 years of service.

She was a member of Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She served in the senior choir, missionary circle, nurse's unit, usher board, Sunday school and kitchen committee.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Jerry Anderson of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two daughters, Barbara Ann Womack of Staten Island, N.Y., and Sharon Watson of South Boston; two sisters, Selma R. Watson and Belva Richardson, both of Staten Island, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Arthur E. Crews. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Howerton Funeral Home, Chatham, is in charge of arrangements.

Russell Beavers

Russell Downing Beavers, 81, of 255 Holbrook St., died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 11, 1915, in Danville, he was the son of William E. Beavers and Lena Beavers.

He was married to Audrey McCoy Beavers, who survives.

He was a 1946 graduate from the American Academy of Embalming and Mortuary Research, Inc. in New York City.

He was a member of Holbrook Street Presbyterian Church.

He owned and operated Beavers Funeral Home in Danville until his retirement in 1992.

He served in World War II.

He was a member of the American Legion.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Dr. Russell Downing Beavers Jr. of Long Island, N.Y., and Anthony Beavers of Montreal; a stepson, Clyde A. McCoy of Danville; three stepdaughters, Brenda Faye McCoy of Richmond, Patricia G. McCoy of Danville and Sharon McCoy Holley of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Louise Beavers of Halifax; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Saturday from Holbrook Street Presbyterian Church by the Rev. George Wilson. Burial will be held in the Beaver Family cemetery, where military rites will be performed by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard of Danville.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the residence.

Shirley Brandon

ALTON - Shirley Johnson Brandon, 58, died Monday, July 14, 1997, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Born Nov. 26, 1938, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Vincent Johnson and Nannie Johnson, who survives.

She was a member of the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church in Alton.

In addition to her mother of Alton, survivors include three daughters, Dale Dunn of Semora, N.C., Sandra Totten of Danville and Sheila Slayton of Fort Stewart, Ga.; two sons, Elbert Brandon Jr. of Tenn., and James C. Brandon of Dayton, Ohio; five sisters, Loretta Swain of Washington, D.C., and Edith Trammel and Dorothy Lipscomb, both of Alton, Bernice Lipscomb of South Boston and Catherine Edmunds of Ringgold; two brothers, Barethonie Johnson and Samuel Johnson, both of Alton; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church in Alton by the Rev. Dr. H.R. Surgeon. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

A viewing for relatives and friends will be from noon-8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her mother, 2009 Williamson Road, Alton.

Roger Kent Byrd Sr.

GRETNA - Roger Kent Byrd Sr., 61, of 104 Highland Road, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at his residence.

Born Oct. 5, 1935, in Kinston, N.C., he was a son of the late Ed Byrd and Vendetta Lee Byrd.

Mr. Byrd received his business degree from Chowan Junior College, his degree in education from Pheiffer College and his Masters degree from the University of Virginia.

During his long career with the Pittsylvania County School System, he served as a head basketball coach, baseball coach, assistant football coach, assistant principal at Gretna Middle School and the principal of Climax Elementary School.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gretna.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Beverly Byrd of the residence. one son, Ken Byrd of Gretna, one daughter, Cindy Byrd Fifer of Atlanta, three brothers, David Byrd, Wilson Scott and Bill Scott, all of Burlington, N.C., one sister, Helen Rainey of Burlington, N.C., his aunt, Vernice Rouse of Burlington, N.C., and one grandson, Kevin Byrd of Gretna.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Glenn Graves and the Rev. W.D. Lilly. Burial will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va., 24557, or to the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 615, Gretna, Va. 24557.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 104 Highland Road, Gretna.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangments.

Angela Fralick

HALIFAX - Angela Burnette Fralick, 24, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, in Bitberg, Germany.

Born Mar. 14, 1973, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Bruce Burnette and Elaine Mills Burnette, who survive.

She was married to Michael Fralick, who survives.

She was an Airman E4 in the United States Air Force.

She was a member of Union United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include a son, Bradley Paro of Bitberg; a sister, Leigh Anne B. Stewart of South Boston; and a grandfather, Otha W. Burnette of Danville.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, South Boston. Burial will be held at the Union United Methodist Church cemetery, Halifax.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her parents, 2174 Grubby Road.

Harry Millner

CASCADE - Harry James Millner, 89, of 14849 Martinsville Highway, died Monday, July 14, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born May 28, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jessie Millner and Anna Augusta Anderson Millner.

He was married to Cordie Dolton Millner, who predeceased him.

He was self-employed most of his life.

Survivors include three daughters, Delores Anderson of Lackey, Anna Deering of Cascade and Sylvia Jean Roberts of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Leary Harper of Danville; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. John W. Tinsley. Burial will be held in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Anna Deering, Rt. 1, Cascade.

Sarah Pritchett

Sarah Whitney Pritchett, 79, of Stratford House, 1111 Main St., died Thursday afternoon, July 17, 1997, at Stratford Health Center following a lengthy illness.

Born June 3, 1918, in Williamstown, Mass., she a daughter of Frederick Augustus Whitney and Blanche Abbott Whitney.

On Nov. 28, 1942, she was married to Dr. Drake Pritchett, who survives.

She was a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Church Women.

She was a member of Dorethea Henry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Garden Club of Danville.

She was also a member of the Wednesday Club and the Danville-Pittsylvania Medical Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four sons, Drake Pritchett Jr., Whitney Pritchett and James H. Pritchett, all of Danville, and John A. Pritchett of Houston; a daughter, Ann P. Van Horn III of New Orleans; a sister, Eleanor W. Happer of Durham, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Frederick Abbott Whitney.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.

Mary Still

Mary Ellen Still, 76, of 186 Hamilton St., died Tuesday, July 15, 1997, at

Stratford House.

Born Nov. 18, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Henry Hairston and Lessie Ferrell Hairston.

She was married to William D. Still, who predeceased her.

Survivors include a son, Vann Still of Danville; a daughter, Mary Ratliffe of Danville; and a brother, Tommie Hairston of Danville.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Hayes McConnell. Burial will be held in Floral Hill Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
