'Speedy' Meadows
John Wesley "Speedy" Meadows, 455 Brentwood Drive, died Thursday, July 24, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born July 3, 1919, in Danville, he was the son of John Wesley Meadows Sr. and Kate Riddle Meadows.
He was married
to Evelyn H. Meadows, who survives.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, where he served on many committees and was a member of the Servo Sunday school class.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 325 and Southern Squares.
He was retired from APAC after 25 years of service. Prior to that, he had worked at Wyatt Buick for nine years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, James Allen Meadows and Michael Lee Meadows, both of Danville; a daughter, Rhonda W. Seamster of Danville; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Mattie Lee Poteat Meadows.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Keen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Campbell. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park, where military graveside honors will be performed by the Honor Guard of the American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Phillip 'Peg' Walker
CHATHAM - Phillip Benjaman "Peg" Walker, 64, 11917 Anderson Mill Road, died Thursday, July 24, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 28, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Rebel Keen Walker and Mary Catherine Hammack Walker, who survives.
He was married
to Rebecca Gibson Walker, who survives.
He was employed by Callands Hardwood Sawmill.
He was of the Christian faith.
In addition to his mother of Sandy Level and his wife of the residence, survivors include a stepson, Robert Wesley Rigney of Chatham; three brothers, Willard Walker and Jimmy "Rusty" Walker, both of Sandy Level, and William "Gibbie" Walker of Pelham, N.C.; and five sisters, Christine Willis of Martinsville, Blanche Shelton of Hurt, Minnie Murphy of Naples, Fla., and Lottie Fulp and Kathy Bolling, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was predeceased by a brother, Eugene Walker.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the Oakes Family cemetery by James Oakes and the Rev. Kenneth McFarling.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Marie Yarbrough
Marie Fanco Yarbrough, 77, formerly of 426 Lansbury Drive, died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home since 1991.
Born May 12, 1920, in Detroit, she was a daughter of Phillip Fanco and Anna Markeack Fanco.
On Jan. 20, 1945, she was married
to Julian L. "Pete" Yarbrough, who died Dec. 14, 1980.
She was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church.
She lived most of her life in Danville.
She was retired form Fleming Transfer, where she worked as a secretary.
She served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors include a daughter, Lori Ann Y. Barbour of Danville; a brother, Phillip Fanco of Dearborn, Mich.; two sisters, Elaine F. Doyle of Union, Ky., and Ann F. Proffitt of Dearborn, Mich.; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Jeff Yarbrough; a brother, John Fanco; and a granddaughter.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Paul G. Johnson and the Rev. Adolph Oterson. Interment
will be held in Highland Burial Park, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Claude Yeatts
Claude Leverette Yeatts, 87, 218 South Raleigh Court, died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, at Stratford Health Center following four months of declining health and three and one- half weeks in the hospital.
Born Jan. 1, 1910, in Danville, he was the son of Eppa Shields Yeatts and Virginia Clements Yeatts.
He spent most of his life in Danville.
He was married
to Lucelle Reaves Yeatts, who died on July 18, 1989. On Mar. 4, 1995, he was married
to Virginia Pugh Yeatts, who survives.
He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, and the American Legion Post 325.
He was retired from the Register & Bee newspaper, where he worked as a typesetter.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Survived only by his wife of Danville, he was the last surviving member of his generation.
The family will receive friends at 916 Westover Drive.

Jacob 'Buster' Waters
GRETNA - Jacob Astor "Buster" Waters, 74, 3480 Pittsville Road, died Thursday, July 24, 1997, in Veterans Hospital in Salem.
Born April 18, 1923, in Franklin, N.C., he was a son of Doc H. Waters and Nina Teague Waters.
He was married
to Eva Tallent Waters, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a retired employee with Klopman Mills.
He attended Pittsville Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Mitchell Waters of Pittsville and Richard Waters of Blairs; two daughters, Geneatta Shelton of Cullen and Kathy Shields of Pittsville; a brother, Richard Hoover Waters of Newport News; five sisters, Clara Jo Bishop and Jane Pendergrass, both of Franklin, N.C., and Edith Beaty, Betty Huffman and Marie Truett, all of Gastonia, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Daryl "Doc" Waters.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Pittsville Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Chris Brown and the Rev. Kirby Phillips. Burial will be held in the church cemetery, where military rites will be performed by VFW Post 4165 and DAV Chapter 46 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alease Barksdale
RINGGOLD - Alease B. Barksdale, 76, 5844 Kentuck Road, died Friday, July 25, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 24, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lemon and Alice Robertson Brown.
She was employed at Dan River Inc. and was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church.
She was married
to John D. Barksdale, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Timothy Barksdale of Jarrett; two daughters, Tessie Davis and Derinda K. Harrington, both of Danville; one sister, Mary Sue Enoch of Syracuse, N.Y.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kentuck Baptist Church by the Rev. Jesse Fitz. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home in Danville.

Ruby Goforth
SPRINGFIELD - Ruby Scruggs Goforth, 80, died Saturday, July 26, 1997, at Fairfax Hospital.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Matthew Brown and Martha Jane Clark Scruggs.
She had worked as a supervisor in retail sales. She was a member of the Messiah United Methodist Church in Springfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas J. Goforth, and a son, Kenneth B. Goforth.
Survivors include three sons, Paul Goforth of Springfield, Tommy Goforth of Bakersfield, Calif., and Carl Goforth of Danville; one sister, Esther Day of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; three brothers, Neal Scruggs of Providence, N.C., Casper Scruggs of Wake Forest, N.C., and Marshall Scruggs of Pennsville, N.J.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel in Danville. Burial will be in Scruggs family cemetery in Chatham.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West St. in Manassas. A second visitation will be held 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home, Danville.
Barbara Hughes
Barbara McGuire Hughes, 63, of 795 Edmonds St., died of a heart attack on Saturday morning, July 26, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 26, 1934, in Danville, she was a daughter of Curtis Gilmer McGuire and Gracie Gardner McGuire.
She was a graduate of Schoolfield High School in 1951 and a graduate of Danville Community College, where she received her LPN from the School of Nursing in 1976.
For the past 18 years, Hughes had worked at Danville Regional Medical Center as an LPN/EEG technician.
She attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church on North Main Street.
On Dec. 23, 1950, she was married
to Barney L. Hughes, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Debra Hughes Watts of Danville and Karen Hughes Reynolds of Lynchburg; two sons, Barney L. Hughes Jr. and Michael B. Hughes, both of Danville; two brothers, Lewis E. McGuire of Blairs and Billy Lee McGuire of Danville; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Joe Beck and Dr. James Gardner. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
