Josephine Pierce
BLAIRS - Josephine Patterson Pierce, 88, of 261 Edwards Branch Road, died Saturday, July 26, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for four months.
Born March 19, 1909, in Gretna, she was the daughter of William Patterson and Rosa Simpson Patterson.
She spent most of her life in the Blairs community, and after 37 years of service she retired from the #1 Weave at Dan River Inc. She was a member of Blairs Baptist Church.
Her husband was Otis Henry Pierce, who died March 2, 1980.
Survivors include one son, James "Sonny" Pierce of Danville; two daughters, Inez P. McGuire and Lois P. Hammock, both of Blairs; two sisters, Clara P. Neals of Danville and Mary P. Bailes of Renan; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Lorraine P. Buck and Estelle Pierce; and one brother, Henry Patterson.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Carson Dalton. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence of the daughter, Inez P. McGuire, 261 Edwards Branch Road.
Holly Lester
Holly Lynn Lester, 17, 149 Samuel Road, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following an automobile accident.
Born June 7, 1980, in Danville, she was the daughter of Carson F. Lester and Myra McGuire Lester.
She was a member of Blairs Baptist Church. She was also actively involved with the youth group of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
Holly was a rising senior at Chatham High School, where she was a member of the track team, Future Farmers of America and a cheerleader.
She worked at Golden Skillet restaurant on Piney Forest Road.
In addition to her mother of the residence and her father of Danville, survivors include a paternal grandmother, Ruth Barker Lester of Danville; abd three brothers, Frankie Lester, Brian Lester and Barron Lester, all of Danville.
She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, H.B. Lester Jr.; a maternal grandfather, Buford T. McGuire; and a maternal grandmother, Ruby Moxley McGuire.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church by the Rev. W. Clay Knick, the Rev. Thomas Deal and the Rev. Mike Hearp.
Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel. At other times they will be at the residence and at Carson Lester's residence, 881 Lester Lane, Danville.
Judith Louhoff
Judith Harwell Louhoff, 54, 130 Watlington Court, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She had been in declining health since 1994.
Born Oct. 30, 1942, in Danville, she was a daughter of James M. Harwell and Mammie Thacker Harwell, who survives.
On Aug. 2, 1960, she was married
to Arthur Louhoff, who survives.
She spent her entire life in Danville. She retired due to disability from Dan River Inc., where she worked as a seamstress.
She was a member of the Tabernacle.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Arthur Jones Louhoff III of Danville and Rodney Louhoff of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Tracey Louhoff Buffington of Danville; a sister, Linda Harwell Singleton of Gainesville, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral arrangements are incomplete at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Lemely "Spider" Cassell
Lemely Charlie "Spider" Cassell, 88, of Bassett, died Monday, April 14, 1997, in Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Martinsville.
Born May 16, 1908, in Henry County, he was a son of William A. Cassell and Roxie Campbell Cassell.
He was married
to Elaine Spinks Cassell, who survives.
He was retired from the Henry County Public School System, with 21 years of service as a bus driver and maintenance worker.
He was a member of Goodwill Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Carol Wright of Bassett; two sons, Leon Wright of Stuart and Chester Wright of Stanley, N.C.; five brothers, Roy Cassell and J.D. Cassell, both of Bassett, Otis Cassell and Robert Cassell, both of Patrick Springs, and Amos Cassell of Eden, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Clifton, Annie Doss, and Lillie Cassell; and four brothers, Willie Cassell, Carter Cassell, Tommy Cassell and Harley Cassell.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Old Center Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Paul Clark and the Rev. H.L. Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Collins Funeral Services Chapel in Bassett.
John Clark
CHATHAM - John Willie Clark, 63, 1233 Union Hall School Road, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, in his residence.
Born June 29, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Delaware Dover Clark Sr. and Plina Kay King Clark.
He was married
to Loree Wilma Dunn Clark, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Wayne Clark of Washington, D.C., and Angelo Clark of Upper Malboro, Md.; two daughters, Jacqueline Jennifer and Janet C. Daniels, both of Temple Hills, Md.; four brothers, Roy Amos Clark, Robert Clark, James T. Clark and Rev. Delaware Clark Jr., all of Chatham; and four sisters, Bernice Barksdale, Delores Harris and Edell Clark, all of Chatham, and Susan McLaughlin of Suitland, Md.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from Hopel Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Delaware Clark Jr. Burial will be in Union Hall Baptist Church cemetery in Chatham.

Charles Clifton
Charles Albert Clifton, 58, 504 Granville Drive, died Monday, April 14, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a year of declining health.
Born July 8, 1937, in Landsale, Pa., he was a son of Albert Clifton and May Dilworth Clifton, who survive.
On Aug. 29, 1959, he was married
to Beverly Ann Hamilton Clifton, who survives.
He had spent the past three years in Danville, but had previously lived in Pennsylvania.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 28 years in the Dosstown, Pa. Post Office. He formerly worked at Sylvan Pools in Dosstown for seven years.
He served as assistant scoutmaster in the early 70s and as assistant coach with Little League in Quakertown, Pa.
He was a member of Calvary Church of Nazarine in Danville.
He also served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his parents, survivors include three sons, Charles David Clifton, Mark Scott Clifton and Bett Wayne Clifton, all of Quakertown; a brother, David William Clifton of Charlottesville; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Friday from Calvary Church of Nazarine by the Rev. Ron Graham.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Carroll "Mac" McDowell
LYNCHBURG - Carroll Thomas "Mac" McDowell, 82, of 2245 Landover Place, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Beulah Coleman Gallier McDowell.
Born Jan. 21, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, Mr. McDowell was the son of the late Jack McDowell and Gillie McCrickard McDowell.
He retired from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Lynchburg Christian Fellowship.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Lynda Beach of Danville; three stepchildren, Billy Ray Gallier of Florida, Wayne Franklin Gallier and Nancy Lee Pribble of Lynchburg; one brother, Herman McDowell of Danville; five sisters, Leonie McDowell, Bernice Handy, Inez Blalock and Mozelle Campbell of Danville and Avis Tinsley of Shawnee, Okla.; one granddaughter; six stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and a devoted friend, Brenda Cofer.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Whitten Park Avenue Chapel in Lynchburg by the Rev. Nancy L. Pribble. Interment
will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
David Owens Jr.
COURTLAND - David Bonner Owens Jr., 82, of 22431 Linden Street, died Sunday, April 13, 1997.
He was the son of the late David B. and Mary Daniel Owens and the husband of the late Dorothy Story Owens.
Mr. Bonner was born in Danville, and was a long-time resident of Norfolk.
He attended VPI & SU and Hampden Sydney. He was also a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a retired vice-president of Lavino Shipping in Norfolk. He was also a protestant.
Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne O. Lovett and her husband Gary of Franklin; a sister, Ruth O. Kruse of Miami; a brother, Jack Owens of Chula Vista, Calif.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Poplar Spring cemetery by the Rev. Edward C. Johnson.

Louise Snyder
Louise Elizabeth Eanes Snyder, 84, formerly of Figsboro, died Monday, April 14, 1997, in Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center.
Born March 26, 1913, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Henry Clay Eanes and Emma Giles Eanes.
She was married
to Richard Gardner Snyder, who predeceased her.
She was a housewife. She was a member of Stone Memorial Christian Church and a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Snyder of Danville; a grandson, R. Lester Snyder of Danville; and one great-grandson.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Bobby Lee Snyder.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Roselawn Burial Park by the Rev. Harry Johnston.
The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside, and other times at 1732 Westover Drive, Danville.
