Fannie Wiles
Fannie Dodson Wiles, of Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home, died Monday, April 14, 1997.
Born Dec. 23, 1898, in Ringgold, she was a daughter of Henry J. Dodson and Lucy Stutz Dodson.
She was married
to Felix E. Wiles, who died in 1966.
She received her teaching certificate from State Teachers College (presently known as Longwood College). She taught in Richmond and Pittsylvania County.
She spent most of her life in Ringgold and had been a resident of the nursing home since June 1995.
She had been a member of Cane Creek Primitive Baptist Church since 1918.
She is survived by a sister, Ethel Dodson of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Townes Memorial Chapel by Elder C.B. Davis. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home.
Irene Casey
Irene Duffy Casey, 77, 208 Englewood Lane, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, in her residence.
Born April 19, 1919, in Charlotte Court House, she was a daughter of Charlie G. Duffy and Lelia Dickerson Duffy.
She was married
to Homer Casey, who survives.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Riveroak Church of God and was a charter member of the VIPs of the church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Barry Casey of Danville; three sisters, Lessie Roach, Willie Motley and Ida Rich, all of Danville; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Carrol G. Duffy, and a sister, Bertha Parrish.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Tim Knuckles and the Rev. Ray Wiggs.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Richard Gillispie
CHATHAM - Richard Ernest Gillispie, 50, 316 Spruce Hill, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 10, 1946, in Danville, he was a son of Paul Clifton Gillispie and Dorothy Turner Gillispie, who survives.
He was married
to Dell Willis Gillispie, who also survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Inc.
In addition to his wife and his mother, survivors include a stepdaughter, Melissa Sigmon of Chatham; a stepson, Richard Vaughan of Danville; three brothers, Paul Douglas Gillispie of Taylorville, Roger Gillispie and Brian Keith Gillispie, both of Danville; and one stepgrandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Rudy Hearn.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his mother, 214 Skylark Drive, Danville.
Verna Gowdey
RICHMOND - Verna Leachman Gowdey, of 29 Millstone Road, died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at Saint Mary's Hospital.
She was born near Richmond territory, Okla., and grew up in Woodward, Okla.
She was the daughter of the late Dr. T.C. Leachman, a prominent pioneer physician in the area, and his wife, the late Florence Petty Leachman.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Jerry, who died before the birth of her daughter, and by brothers, Claude Eugene Leachman, Ralph Petty Leachman and Oakley Thaddeus Leachman.
After her marriage to the late Gerald Raymond Gowdey, she lived in Woodward and Oklahoma City and later in Dallas.
In 1951, she and her husband moved to Richmond, where they founded Dairy Queen of Virginia. At the time of Mr. Gowdey's death in 1956, they had established Dairy Queen locations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. After her retirement and the sale of the Dairy Queen franchise, she engaged in various activities, including that of office manager for a leading Richmond dentist.
She was active in a variety of Richmond civic endeavors, including leadership roles in Chapter "M" of P.E.O., a philanthropic educational organization. Prior to moving to Virginia, she served as president of Chapters "AC" and "AA" in Oklahoma City and Woodward, respectively. She and her family were also very active in the First Christian Church of Woodward.
She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Gowdey Williams (Mrs. Ebb H. Williams III) of Martinsville; her grandson, Kevin T. Williams of Dearborn, Mich.; and her granddaughter, Christa G. Williams of Charleston, S.C.
In addition, she is survived by one great-granddaughter, Kathryn C. Williams of Dearborn, as well as several nieces, Petty Jo and Novie Rae Leachman of Dallas, Agnes L. Bittman of Amarillo, Texas, Linda L. Lescault of Richmond, and Claudette L. Landers of Amarillo; and several nephews, Roger Mae Leachman of Rochester, Minn., and Joe Charles Gowdey of Gloucester.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 1997, at Woody Funeral Home, Parham Road Chapel, with the Rev. Paul W. Simrell, pastor of her church, Battery Park Christian Church, officiating. Interment
will be in Woodward.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1818, Memphis, Tenn. 38101.
Ocie Blair
Ocie Brumfield Blair, 78, 560 Bermuda Road, and formerly of Mount Cross Road, died Thursday, April 17, 1997, in her residence.
Born Sept. 20, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Christopher Brumfield and Lelia Giles Brumfield.
She was married
to James L. Blair, who died in 1971.
She spent her entire life in the Danville area and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Survivors include three stepdaughters, Nellie B. Coleman of Eden, N.C., Aleese B. Carter and Ernestine B. Mize, both of Danville; and two brothers, Bernard G. Brumfield of the residence and Howard Brumfield of Danville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Pattie Blair; a stepson, Norman Blair; two stepsisters, Roxie B. Stowe and Elsie B. Swann; and a stepbrother, Beverly C. Brumfield.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by Elder C.B. Davis.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Pauline Foster
Pauline Crowder Foster, 79, 145 Cumberland Drive, died Thursday, April 17, 1997, in Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville, where she had been a resident for two weeks. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born Sept. 8, 1917, in Max Meadows, she was a daughter of Floyd J. Crowder and Virginia Southerland Crowder.
She was married
to Carlton J. Foster, who died in 1981.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area, where she was a member of the D.A.V. Ladies Auxiliary. She was also of the Christian faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan E. Boggs of Danville; three sons, Carlton F. Foster of Hyco Lake, N.C., Larry W. Foster of Danville and Michael K. Foster of Churchville, Md.; a sister, Goldie C. Patterson of Wendell, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Jewel Goodwin
Jewel C. Goodwin, 86, 231 South Ridge St., Apt. A-11, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.
She is survived by two sons, the Rev. Dr. Gerald C. Goodwin of Durham, N.C., and Dr. David Goodwin Jr. of Gadsden, Ala.; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Woodberry Hills Baptist Church by the Rev. Lewis Harris.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in Alabama.
Hudson Funeral Home of Durham is in charge of local arrangements.
Ruby Huggins
Ruby Irving Huggins, 77, 516 Cleveland St., died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, in Martinsville Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born June 6, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Jennie Willie Irving.
She was married
to Richard H. Huggins, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith and a retired tobacco worker.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. B.B. Smith. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The remains may be viewed until 8 tonight at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home.

Louise Roher
CHATHAM - Louise King Roher, 82, 124 Triangle Road, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center of Danville.
Born Jan. 31, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Tom and Carrie Dillard King.
She was married
to Garfield Roher, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of Callands Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Hugh Lawrence Roher of the residence; two sisters, Doris Abram of Philadelphia and Nannie Roher of Camden, N.J.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Ruby Webb, and three brothers, Norman King, Hubert King and Clarence King.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Callands Baptist Church by the Rev. Samuel Scales. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
