SUTHERLIN - Thomas Vaden Peek Sr., 53, 2900 Ringgold Depot Road, died Friday, April 18, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following six years of declining health.
Born Jan. 11, 1944, in Danville, he was a son of Roy Peek and Virgie Griffin Peek.
He was married
to Sue Bowman Peek, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Danville and Sutherlin areas. He was employed as a carpenter.
He was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Thomas Vaden Peek Jr. of Sutherlin; a brother, Maynard Peek of Ringgold; a sister, Hazel Tate of Danville; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Monday from Sandy Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Dale Proctor and Larry Burner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Virginia Rowland
GRETNA - Virginia Wilson Rowland, 54, 8624 East Gretna Road, died Friday, April 18, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 5, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Noel Wilson and Lillie Dove Wilson.
She was married
to Bernard L. Rowland, who survives.
She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by BGF Industries.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Tony A. Rowland of Gretna and David Lee Rowland of Bedford; a daughter, Michelle R. Dalton of Rustburg; three brothers, Jack Wilson of Gretna, James Wilson of Gladys and Clarence Wilson of Mohawk, Mich.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. R.G. Rowland and the Rev. Billy Robertson. Burial will be in the Rowland Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in Gretna, and other times at the residence.
Mildred Slayton
Mildred Lee Slayton, 85, 406 Cambridge Circle, died Friday, April 18, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 19, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Thomas B. Slayton and Wessie Lumpkin Slayton.
She graduated from James Madison University and the University of Virginia.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as principal of Schoolfield Elementary School for 40 years.
She served as past state president of Delta Kappa Gamma and past member of the Governor's Council on Education.
She was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, where she volunteered as financial secretary.
She is survived by two nieces.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. John LeGault. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a niece, Anne Furgurson, 406 Chadwick Drive.
Bishop Daisy Wilson
Bishop Daisy Springfield Wilson, died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a decline in her health.
Born Jan. 19, 1911, in Leasburg, N.C., she was a daughter of the Rev. Oscar Springfield and Mollie Warren Springfield.
For 63 years, she was married
to Hezekiah Wilson, who predeceased her.
She was employed by Lorillard Tobacco Inc. for 45 years.
She was a member of Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ.
She was pastor of Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ in Blairs and Holy Tabernacle Headquarters on Industrial Avenue.
In 1975, she became general overseer bishop of Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ Inc., and was overseer of seven churches.
Survivors include two sons, Clyde Wilson of Yanceyville, N.C., and Donald Wilson of Chesapeake; a foster daughter, Loretta G. Vaughn of Cincinnati; a sister, Frances Harrell of Danville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday from Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
A wake will be held 7-9 tonight at Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home Chapel.
Brenda E. Stephens
Brenda E. Stephens, 45, of 1348 Green Farm Road, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
Born Aug. 27, 1951, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Albert Williams and Anna Farmer Williams. She was married
to Ray Stephens, who survives.
Other survivors include her mother, Anna Williams of Danville; four daughters, Matosha Stephens, Rachelle Stephens, Veronica Stephens and Brenzle Stephens, all of Danville; three sisters, Lois Breedlove and Shirley Fitzgerald of Danville and Gladys Williams of Blairs; and numerous grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, April 20 at Amazing Bibleway Church in Clarksville, by Apostle L.G. Campbell. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Carroll Yeatts
Carroll Vincent Yeatts Sr., 75, of 945 Lotus Drive, Gretna, died Saturday, April 19, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 8, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Vincent Yeatts and Ida Jane Simpson Yeatts.
He was the retired owner of Carroll's Barber Shop and was a member of Anderson Memorial Untied Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 232.
He is survived by his wife, Lilye Tosh Yeatts of the residence.
Other survivors include two sons, Vincent Yeatts of Converse, Texas and Glenn Yeatts of Midlothian; two sister, Bernice Wood of Gretna and Verna Hunt of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Michael Southall-Vess. Interment
will follow in the Gretna Burial Park.

Gladys Baker
Gladys Baker, 80, formerly of 600 Main St., died Sunday evening, April 20, 1997, at Piney Forest Health Care Center, where she had lived for two weeks.
Born Sept. 3, 1916, in Henderson, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Henry Baker and Ella Fuller Baker.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she worked at Dan River Inc. as a spinner until her retirement. She attended Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Charmaine Comer of Danville; five brothers, Frank Baker of Chula Vista, Calif., Charlie Baker of Memphis, Robert H. Baker of Richmond, Eddie R. Baker and Bobby L. Baker both of Danville; three grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Elmo Baker and Grover Baker, and a sister, Catherine Furguson.
The graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Tuesday at Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times will be at the home of her daughter, 199 Martin Ave.
Robert Mustain
Col. Robert "Bob" M. Mustain, 81, of 141 Sutherlin Ave., died Sunday, April 20, 1997, at his home.
Born Dec. 24, 1915, in Danville, he was a son of R. Jack Mustain and Mabelle Newman Mustain.
He was the founder of Kwik Shop Markets, and was past president of the Danville Life Underwriters Association. He was a past president of Danville Sertoma Club; and was a life member of Sertoma Club International.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II and Korea. He was a member of American Legion Post 325, including the post honor guard. He was also a member of Danville Elks Club, and was a charter member of Tuscarora Country Club.
He was a past member of Keen Street Baptist Church.
On Nov. 23, 1940, he was married
to Gyspy Ross Mustain, who is predeceased.
Survivors include three sons, Eric Mustain and Michael H. Mustain, both of Danville; Donald R. Mustain of Keeling; one daughter, Teresa Mustain Earles of Richmond; one brother, Hidy Mustain of Danville; one sister, Kelvin M. Floyd of Newark, Del.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Thomas Wright. Military graveside honors will be performed by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post. 325. Entombment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the residence.

Betty Oldham
Betty Jennings Oldham, 53, of 127 Sweet Briar Drive, died Sunday, April 20, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 23, 1943, in Pulaski County, she was the daughter of Samuel Henry Jennings and Annie Quisenberry Jennings.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
On Dec. 22, 1961, she was married
to James Dennis Oldham, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, James Christopher Oldham of Burlington, N.C.; David Wayne Oldham of Ringgold; two brothers, James B. Jennings of Danville and Henry Jennings of Draper; three sisters, Shirley J. Alexander and Leece J. Alexander, both of Max Meadows; and Lora J. Bates of Danville; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. James Albert. Burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Dry Pond cemetery in Carroll County.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times will be at the home of her son, David Oldham, at 288 Manna Hill Road, off Route 713.
