Frances Taylor
Frances Singleton Taylor, 70, 229 North Raleigh Court, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born May 18, 1926, in Gastonia, N.C., she was a daughter of Millard Oscar Singleton and Flora Bishop Singleton.
She was married
to Oswell Edward Taylor Sr., who died Aug. 14, 1986.
She was employed by Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday school class and the Women's Missionary Union.
She is survived by a son, Oswell E. Taylor Jr. of the residence.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Moffett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, and other times at the residence.

'Ma' Caldwell
Ruth Farris "Ma" Caldwell, 121 Naples St., died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in 1899, in Washington County, she was a daughter of Lee A. Farris and Louise Colley Farris.
She was married
to Capt. Herbert S. Caldwell, who died Sept. 6, 1982.
She was a charter member of West Main Baptist Church, where she worked in the cradle roll department for several years.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Memorial Hospital in the nursery department for 25 years.
She is survived by two sons, Herbert S. Caldwell Jr. of Rockville, Md., and William F. Caldwell of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Dan Farris.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Bruce Wilson.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Hope Calvert
Hope Savage Calvert, 87, 12216 Martinsville Hwy., died Thursday, April 24, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1910, in Berwick, Pa., she was a daughter of George N. Savage and Ruth Trowbridge Savage.
On Sept. 19, 1933, she was married
to Bernard Calvert, who survives.
She spent most of her life in the Brosville community, where she was a homemaker and operated the Brosville Service Station with her husband.
She was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school.
She was also a charter member of Brosville Womans Club and the Virginia-North Carolina Piedmont Genealogical Society.
Survivors include three daughters, Faye Dickens and Bernice Gammon, both of Danville, and Kathryn May of Forest; three brothers, Joe Savage of Charlotte, N.C., George Savage of Ringgold and Robert Savage of Goldsboro, N.C.; three sisters, Betty McCartney of Petersburg, W.Va., Ruth Lanier of Buena Vista and Ann Savage of Danville; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Brosville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard McDowell. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Gus Hairston
CASCADE - Gus Hairston, 63, 320 Gerlene Lane, died Tuesday, April 22, 1997, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County.
A native of Rockingham County, he was a son of Weldon and Roxie Hairston.
He was a member of Zion Tabernacle Holiness Church in Eden, N.C.
Survivors include six sons, Koircaus J. Hairston of Roanoke, Thomas Leon Hairston of Ridgeway, Roderick J. Hairston of Cascade, Joseph L. Hairston and Wade Hairston, both of Stoneville, N.C., and William Stephen Hairston of Eden; two daughters, Myra D. Broadnax of Cascade and Gloria J. Carter of Eden; three brothers, Richard J. Hairston of Eden, Joe Lee Hairston of Roanoke and Spencer Hairston of Lynchburg; six sisters, Louise Hampton of Cascade, Mary Aikens of Stoneville, Ella Broadnax of Eden, Ruby Brown of Maryland, Sally Hairston and Loretta Burnette, both of Roanoke; and 11 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Perry-Spencer Funeral Home Chapel in Eden. Burial will be in Shady Grove cemetery.
The family will receive friends 2:30-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral Home.
Monique Terry
Monique Somone Terry, 5, 516 Rosemary Lane, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Born Oct. 17, 1991, in Danville, she was a daughter of Gary Terry and Pamela Stone Terry.
In addition to her parents of Danville, she is survived by a brother, Dominique Terry of Danville; a sister, Ebonee Terry of Danville; her maternal grandparents, James and Millie Stone of Danville; and her paternal grandmother, Dorothy Terry of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Laurel Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. James Cabell Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jessie Vaden
Jessie Linwood Vaden, 96, 1230 North Main St., died Thursday, April 24, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following two years of declining health.
Born Feb. 1, 1901, in Danville, she was a daughter of Alfred Jefferson Vaden and Mary Sue Wilkins Vaden.
She lived her life in Danville, where she had been a resident of the nursing home for one year and nine months.
She retired from the Danville Public School system, where she was a school teacher at Bellevue School for 19 years and served as a substitute teacher for five years.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by several great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Harry Vaden; and three sisters, Mary Bradshaw, Elizabeth Clark and Sarah Annie Vaden.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Leemont cemetery by the Rev. Ron W. Mateer.

Sureka Brown
Sureka LaShawn Brown, 18, 709 Old Quarry Road, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, following a car accident on Highway 360.
Born Oct. 6, 1978, in Danville, she was a daughter of Barry E. Ferrell and Karen Brown Ferrell, who survive.
She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and a student at Danville Community College.
In addition to her parents, survivors include a sister, Latoya C. Brown of the residence; her maternal grandparents, Sampson Brown and Carrie Brown of Danville; and her paternal grandparents, Johnny Ferrell and Lena Ferrell of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Howard Graves. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Paul Brumfield
GRETNA - Paul W. Brumfield, 79, 3514 Brights Road, died Friday, April 25, 1997, in his residence.
Born May 11, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Morgan Brumfield and Cecile Dove Brumfield.
He was married
to Virginia Barker Brumfield, who predeceased him.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Summersett Baptist Church.
Survivors include five sons, Vernon Brumfield, Morgan Brumfield, Andy Brumfield and Randy Brumfield, all of Gretna, and Paul Brumfield of Danville; four daughters, Linda Sue Simpson of Pittsville, Patsy Anderson, Angelia Hines and Donna Meeks, all of Gretna; two brothers, Carson Brumfield of Pittsville and Bernard Brumfield of Gretna; four sisters, Irene Lumpkins, Mable Adams and Doris Adams, all of Gretna, and Lioni Adams of Lynchburg; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a grandson.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Summersett Baptist Church by the Rev. Bert Johnson and the Rev. John Belderes. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Carrie Davis
Carrie E. Davis, 87, 1344 North Main St., died Friday, April 25, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, following several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 9, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Thomas J. Davis and Lena Oakes Davis.
She had been a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church since Sept. 6, 1942.
She was the last member of her immediate family.
She is survived by a nephew, Vernell Cassada of Danville; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Davis Cassada, who died Feb. 15, 1993.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frederick Vicks. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
