Deroy Clay
Deroy Clay, 70, 200 West Carter Drive, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, in his residence, following two months of declining health.
Born Aug. 10, 1926, in Halifax County, he was a son of Raleigh T. Clay and Bessie Brown Clay.
On Dec. 7, 1946, he was married
to Recie Roberts Clay, who died Jan. 2, 1996.
He lived his life in Halifax County and Danville, where he had retired from Vulcan Materials as the area superintendent with 47 years of service.
He was a member of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include three sons, Virgil L. Clay and Daryle E. Clay, both of Danville, and Randall D. Clay of Scottsburg; a brother, Thelbert Clay of Lynchburg; four sisters, Elsie C. Jarnette of Lynchburg, Jane C. Shelton of Rustburg, Adell C. Conner of South Boston and Fleecy C. Dowdy of Madison Heights; a stepsister, Janie Seamster of Gladys; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Lawson Clay, and a sister, Lorene C. Shelton.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church on U.S. 58 West by Pastor Gary Robertson and the Rev. Byron Jones. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence, off U.S. 58 West.
Justus 'Jesse' Gibson
CHATHAM - Justus Robertson "Jesse" Gibson, 76, 101 Woodlawn Heights, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, in his residence.
Born May 16, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Harvey Gibson and Mattie Rigney Gibson.
He was first married
to Louise G. Gibson, who died in 1988. He was then married
to Rebecca Crane Gibson, who survives.
He was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
He founded and operated Jesse Gibson Charter Service for 27 years and retired from Dan River Inc. in 1982.
During World War II, he served in Germany for three years, and received a Purple Heart and Sharp Shooters Medal.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Betty G. Adams of Blairs and Pat Scearce of Danville; a son, J.R. Gibson Jr. of Chatham; two stepdaughters, Pam Inge of Greensboro, N.C., and Betty Adkins of Danville; two stepsons, Charlie Crane and David Crane, both of Dry Fork; four sisters, Ola G. Dalton and Naomi Gibson, both of Danville, Eva G. Soloman of Yanceyville, N.C., and Irene G. Stowe of Dry Fork; three half-sisters, Earlene G. Terry, Betty Gray and Sue Chambers, all of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Oscar Gibson, and two sisters, Doris G. Powell and Novella G. Pradner.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Chatham by the Rev. Lou Martin, the Rev. Hylton Lawrence Jr. and the Rev. Henry Butler. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Alberta Hall
LONG ISLAND - Alberta Payne Hall, 75, of Route 1, died Tuesday, April 29, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born March 26, 1922, in Campbell County, she was a daughter of Sam Payne and Emma Younger Payne.
She was married
to Doc Hall, who survives.
She was a homemaker and a member of Altavista Kingdom Hall.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Caressa B. Moyee of Martinsville, Florence B. Hall of the residence and Patricia B. Robertson of Pittsville; three sons, David J. Hall of Chatham, William B. Bland of Mississippi and Christopher L. Hall of Martinsville; four sisters, Mattie Patrick of Uniondale, N.Y., Fannie Mae Stone of Hurt, Annie Hall of Renan and Louella Laing of Hempstead, N.Y.; a brother, Carlton Payne of Baltimore; and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Gretna by Brother Edward Carr. Burial will be in the Hall family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Russell Myers Sr.
MARTINSVILLE - Russell Lee Myers Sr., 78, 837 Katherine St., died Monday, April 28, 1997, in Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Nursing Center.
Born June 16, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Myers and Mary Swamson Myers.
He was married
to Hattie Fuller Myers, who survives.
He was employed as a farmer and carpenter.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five daughters, Bernice Millner, Rosie Lee Fuller, Fannie Mae Guess and Eva Marie Myers, all of Martinsville, and Clara Jean Smith of Greensboro, N.C.; a son, Russell Lee Myers Jr. of Danville; two brothers, Frank Myers of New York and James Henry Myers of Seattle; two sisters, Beulah Grant and Clarica King, both of Ringgold; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home in Martinsville by the Rev. Lewis Oliver. Burial will be in Callands Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Margie Reynolds
Margie Hall Reynolds, 63, formerly of 332 Withers Circle, died Tuesday, April 29, 1997, in Riverside Health Care Center, following a decline in her health.
Born Sept. 29, 1933, in Leaksville, N.C., she was a daughter of James Paul Hall and Gracie Barker Hall.
On June 24, 1950, she was married
to Leon Clifford Reynolds, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her former husband, she is survived by a sister, Polly Morris of Mechanicsville; and a brother, James C. Hall of Flint, Mich.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Thomas Wright. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Brenda Tucker
GRETNA - Brenda Gail Tucker, 43, 1453 Pittsville Road, died Tuesday, April 29, 1997, in Franklin Memorial Hospital of Rocky Mount.
Born Jan. 23, 1954, in Campbell County, she was a daughter of Edward and Mary Waller Tucker.
Prior to her retirement due to disability, she was employed by Lane Co. in Altavista.
She was also a member of Mount Airy Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Amanda Tucker of the residence and Pamela Tucker of Hurt; two sisters, Julia Tucker of Nathalie and Nancy Tucker of Baltimore; and six brothers, Samuel Tucker, Elwood Junior Tucker and Bobby Tucker, all of Gretna, James Lewis Tucker and Tony Tucker, both of Hurt, and Edward Carlton Tucker of Halifax.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday from Mount Airy Baptist Church by the Rev. R.P. King. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pearl Allen
Pearl Hundley Allen, 101, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born May 5, 1895, in Sandy River, Mrs. Allen was the daughter of John Thomas Hundley and Christian Ada Gravely Hundley.
On Aug. 3, 1927, she was married
to James William Allen, who predeceased her on Feb. 9, 1941.
Mrs. Allen was a graduate of Averett College and was a school teacher. She was a member of the Joseph Gravely Chapter of D.A.R., a member of the Virginia Garden Club and the Wednesday Club. Mrs. Allen was the oldest member of First Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, John W. Allen of Danville; three grandchildren, Susan Moore of Clayton, N.C., Jane Pretty of Danville and Gail Allen of Ringgold; and two great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Posie Hundley, and three sisters, Mrs. J.E. Richardson, Mrs. M.M. Coleman and Mrs. L.R. Wyatt Sr.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 1997, at Townes Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis will be conducting the service. Interment
will follow at the Hundley family cemetery in Sandy River.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Townes Funeral Home. Other times the family will be at 505 Lansbury Drive.
S.D. Dalton
GRETNA - Samuel Drew "S.D." Dalton, 62, died Thursday, May 1, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 11, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lillard Jehue Dalton Sr. and Cordie Stephens Dalton.
He is survived by a sister, Carolyn D. Dalton of Gretna.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Grady Dalton Sr., Lillard Jehue Dalton Jr., and Moncie G. Dalton.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Colbert-Moran Chapel in Gretna by Elder Marvin Brumfield. Burial will be in the Stephens Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his nephew, Russell Dalton, 3297 Pittsville Road, Gretna.
Leonard Haley
Leonard Clay Haley, 66, 4981 Whispering Pine Road, died Thursday, May 1, 1997, in the emergency room at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had become ill at his residence.
Born May 19, 1930, in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Thomas Haley and Eva Holland Haley.
He was married
to Betty Booth Haley, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County, and had worked for Dan River Inc. for many years. For the past 25 years, he was owner and operator of Haley's Grocery in Brosville.
He attended Brosville High School and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
He had also served in the U.S. Marines.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a stepdaughter, Dorothy Crawford of the residence; three sisters, Dorothy Swanson of Swansonville, Melisa Wood of Pittsville and Mildred Haley of Chatham; and three brothers, W. Boyd Haley of Danville, Raymond Haley of Axton and Nelson Haley of Brosville.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. J.B. Baldridge.
