Annie Hanks
Annie Lee Shumate Hanks, 91, 2526 North Main St., died Thursday, May 1, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 3, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Lee Mack Shumate and Carry Owen Shumate.
She was married
to Joseph Andrew Hanks, who died in April 1978.
She spent her entire life in Danville, where she was a retired baby sitter.
She was also a member of Third Avenue Christian Church.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Juanita H. Hullender of Danville; two stepsons, Joseph Andrew Hanks Jr. and Norman Ray Hanks, both of Danville; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Freddy J. Vicks. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Jess Moran
Jess Willard Moran, 75, 126 Mimosa St., died Thursday, May 1, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following three years of declining health.
Born April 23, 1922, in Floyd County, he was a son of Clarence Moran and Ettero Compton Moran.
He was married
to Thelma Robinson Moran, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area, where he worked at Dan River Inc. in the No. 5 finishing room for 35 years. He retired at age 63.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Riveroak Church of God.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Wanda Warner of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, Arlie Moran, Darrell Moran and Keith Moran, all of Danville; two sisters, Veda Cook of Danville and Sadie Cox of Pelham, N.C.; two brothers, Bruce Moran of Danville and Siebert Moran of Christiansburg; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Riveroak Church of God by the Rev. Tim Nuckles. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Thomas Roberts
HALIFAX - Thomas Langston Roberts, 85, 1083 King's Village Trail, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, in Woodview Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 17, 1911, in Halifax County, he was a son of Thomas Reekes Roberts and Lucy Nash Roberts.
He was married
to Oakley Hall Roberts, who survives.
He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Anne Roberts of Halifax; a sister, Phebe Ward of Newport News; and a brother, Raymond L. Roberts of Madison, Wis.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Dan River Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Dennis Knight. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston, and other times at the residence.
Treadway 'Boogie' Scearce
Treadway "Boogie" Scearce, 452 Pinecrest Drive, died Thursday, May 1, 1997, at his residence, following a year of declining health.
Born March 4, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Thomas A. Scearce and Della Scearce Scearce.
On April 20, 1972, he was married
to Mary June Scearce, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County, and retired from Dan River Inc. after 36 years of service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a sister, Naomi Matkins of Danville; a brother, Cornell Scearce of Danville; two stepdaughters, Terry Milam of Ringgold and Sandy Keesee of Murfreesboro, Tenn., three stepsons, Mike Brown and Robert Reed, both of Danville, and Larry Reed of Blairs; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dean A. Lamphere.

Dennie Simmons
ALTAVISTA - Dennie Riddle Simmons, 98, died Thursday, May 1, 1997, in Autumn Care Nursing Home of Altavista.
Born Jan. 21, 1899, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George Thomas Riddle and Mittie Robertson Riddle.
She was married
to Lundy B. Simmons, who predeceased her.
She is survived by a foster son, H.L. Layne of Hurt.
A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday in Gretna Burial Park by Minister Larry Owens and Minister Ray Eure.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in Gretna, and other times at the residence of her foster son, 3464 Shula Drive, Hurt.
Margaret Turner
Margaret Castleberry Turner, 74, 221-B Sedgefield Lane, died Thursday, May 1, 1997, in her residence. She had been in declining health since April 1996.
Born July 26, 1922, in Danville, she was a daughter of Joseph Castleberry and Nellie Flynn Castleberry.
She was married
to Wade Turner, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Inc. She also served in the WAVES during World War II.
She was of the Christian faith.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Wade Thomas Turner Jr. of Roxboro, N.C.; two daughters, Margaret Pulliam of Roxboro and Karen Scearce of Danville; a sister, Mary Ann Cawley of Danville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Daryl Joyce.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Gene Barbour
Roy Eugene Barbour, 61, 529 Big Sky Road, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at 324 Church St., following four years of declining health.
Born Sept. 18, 1935, in Hurt, he was a son of Fred E. Barbour and Margaret Barbour, who survives.
He was married
to Virginia Moser Barbour, who died Dec. 4, 1986.
He spent his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas, where he farmed prior to his retirement. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother of Hurt, survivors include four sons, Timothy E. Barbour, Jonathan O. Barbour and Brian K. Barbour, all of Danville, and Roger W. Barbour of Hurt; a daughter, Lisa B. Carter of Chatham; a brother, Jimmy Barbour of Hurt; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. James Klienfelter.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a son, 202 Highland Court, Danville.

Harold Bennett
GRETNA - Harold Nathan Bennett, 75, of Chatham, died Friday, May 2, 1997, in Gretna Health Care.
Born Dec. 3, 1921, in Spray, N.C., he was a son of Lester Bennett and Elizabeth Young Bennett.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Universal.
Survivors include three brothers, L.D. Bennett of Ringgold, Billy Ray Bennett of Richmond and Otey Bennett of Danville; and four sisters, Lucille Perkins and Lottie Moss, both of Danville, Nell Slayton of Richmond and Doris Norcutt of Gretna.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Alma Joseph and Janet Rainer.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. R.G. Rowland.

Ricky Fulk
Ricky Dale Fulk, 38, 3260 Mount Cross Road, Apt. 12, died Friday, May 2, 1997, in Duke Medical Center of Durham.
Born Jan. 16, 1959, in Forsyth County, N.C., he was a son of James M. and Opal James Fulk, who survive.
He was a member of First Church of the Living God in Danville.
He graduated from North Davidson High School in 1979 and attended Forsyth Community College.
While attending high school, he was employed by Fire Side Fish Camp in Lexington, N.C. He later owned and operated Fire Side Country Kitchen in Danville.
In addition to his parents of Lexington, he is survived by two brothers, Michael Fulk of King, N.C., and Danny Fulk of Lexington; and his paternal grandmother, Rose Williams of Welcome, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Good Hope United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tommy Robertson and the Rev. Charles Combow. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Piedmont Funeral Home in Lexington, and other times at the residence of his parents, 907 Old Mill Road, Lexington.
