Frances Irby
RINGGOLD - Frances Nuckols Irby, 71, 336 Davis Drive, died Thursday, May 1, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 15, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of David Samuel Nuckols and Elsie Logan Nuckols.
She was married
to Stover Anderson Irby, who died June 23, 1974.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, Siegfried "Siggy" Irby of Ringgold; four brothers, Elmo Nuckols of Lynchburg, Arthur Nuckols of Danville, Edward Nuckols of Haniball, Mo., and Donald Nuckols of Seffner, Fla.; three sisters, Kathleen N. Butler of Seffner, Doris N. Rodman of Ringgold and Betty Jean N. Lovette of Randleman, N.C.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Kenneth Hall.
The family will receive friends at the residence, which is off Mountain Hill Road.
Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Margaret Brumfield
MONETA - Margaret Lewis Brumfield, 82, of Route 3, Box 225, and formerly of Route 6, Chatham, died Saturday, May 3, 1997, at Elder Care Nursing Home in Rocky Mount. She had been in declining health for five years.
Born Feb. 21, 1915, in Danville, she was the daughter of James Christopher Lewis and Pattie Dillard Lewis.
She lived most of her life at Route 6, Chatham, and for the last few years had lived in Moneta
She was a member of Strawberry Primitive Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence D. Brumfield, who died June 27, 1985, and a son Bennie Wayne Brumfield, who died Oct. 12, 1995.
Surviving are a sister, Helen L. Shelton of Danville; stepchildren, Shirley M. Brumfield and wife June of Danville; Horace D. Brumfield of Delaware; Vivian B. Fraser of Tennessee; brother-in-law, Charlie Brumfield of Danville; sisters-in-law, Virginia B. McDowell and Lola B. Fuller of Danville; most precious friends and neighbors, Annie Lee Heath and Minnie Heath; and nursing friend, Ms. Bollar.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. Elders Thomas Solomon, Lane Carter and Raymond Goad will conduct the services.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
Bertha Holt
SOUTH BOSTON - Bertha B. Holt, 85, of 8117 Philpott Road, died Friday, May 2, 1997, in Halifax Regional Hospital. She had been in declining health for several years.
She was born in Caswell County, N.C., July 31, 1911. She was the daughter of Laura Ware Butts and Charles Henry Butts.
She was a lifetime resident of Caswell County and a homemaker.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by her husband, Judson Grear Holt, of the home. They were married
May 21, 1927.
Survivors include a daughter, Laura H. Collie, and two sons, Kenneth G. Holt and Charles L. Holt.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Kenneth Williams.
Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C. is in charge of the arrangements.
Virginia Kirby
Virginia Funk Kirby, 73, of 26 Milton Ave., died Saturday, May 3, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center. She had been a resident there since 1993.
Born Oct. 15, 1923 in Grayson County, she was a daughter of Ernie William Funk and Ollie Bedwell Funk.
On Nov. 30, 1940, she married
James Anderson Kirby, who survives.
She had lived in Danville since age 15 and was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
She worked in #3 Dress Room at Dan River Inc. for 43 years until her retirement at age 62 for health reasons.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Linda Kirby Newman of Ringgold; two sisters, Mildred Layne of Galax and Alene Carrico of Fries; and two brothers Felix Funk of Danville and Rex Funk of Fries; and seven grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Kirby, and a sister, Marie Radford.
The funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John H. LaRue and the Rev. David R. Turbyfill. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Monday 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the daughter's residence, 1833 Barker Road, Ringgold.
Eddie Scates
CHATHAM - Eddie Scates, 75, of 2740 Irish Road, died Thursday, May 1, 1997, at the residence.
Born in Pittsylvania County Sept. 12, 1921, he was the son of Sylvia and Hobert Scates.
He was married
to Martha Fitzgerald Scates, who survives.
He was a farmer and a deacon and member of Hopel Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Dennis E. Scates of Danville and Sherman W. Echols of Martinsville; two daughters, Deloris A. Smith and Natalie Carter, both of Chatham; two brothers, David N. Scates and Henry P. Scates, both of Chatham; three sisters, Alberta J. Colvard of Philadelphia, Berbenna E. Yancy of Detroit and Everelena Cater of Chatham; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Hopel Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Delaware Clark. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
Cora Trammell
Cora Phelps Trammell, 75, 157 New Ingram Road, died Friday, May 2, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born June 13, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Bruce Phelps and Mary Turner Phelps.
She was married
to Edward Willie Trammell, who died Jan. 24, 1986.
She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County. Prior to an early retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc. in the No. 3 and No. 4 spinning rooms for 42 years.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Trammell Wilson of Dry Fork; three sons, Edward C. Trammell of Keeling, Ernest W. Trammell of Danville and Harry E. Trammell of Ringgold; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday by Rev. Gilmore Hundley and Rev. James Albert. Interment
will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the residence of her daughter, 564 Bowl Drive, Dry Fork, in the Whitmell community.

Luther "Junior" Adkins Jr.
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Luther Troy "Junior" Adkins Jr., 64, died Saturday night, May 3, 1997, in a car accident in Panama City.
Born Sept. 21, 1932, in Schoolfield, Va., he was a son of Luther Troy Adkins Sr. and Lillie Martin Adkins.
He was a 1950 graduate of Schoolfield High School and served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years.
He was retired from Aero-Technical Components of Fort Walton Beach.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, Nelly R. Adkins, of the home, survivors include five sons, Steven Adkins, Bruce Adkins, Chris Adkins, Michael Adkins and Tracy Adkins, all of Panama City; one daughter, Lisa Adkins of Panama City; a sister, Judy A. Oakes of Danville, Va.; a brother, Donnie L. Adkins of Danville, Va.; and 10 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Williams.
The funeral arrangements are incomplete at Wilson Funeral Home, Panama City.

Lois Lyerly
Lois Lyerly, 90, of 328 Grant St., died Friday, May 2, 1997, at her home.
Born Dec. 29, 1904, in Danville, she was the daughter of Weldon Yancey and Henriette Lee Yancey.
She was married
to Joe Lyerly, who predeceased her.
She is survived by two nieces, including Sylvia Cooper of Danville, and a nephew, Charlie Massie of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the home of Charlie Massie, 105 Saint Paul Circle.
