'Sammy' Shelton
A graveside service for Samuel "Sammy" Henry Shelton, 71, 107 Church St., will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Danville Memorial Gardens by George Henderson.
He died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at his residence, following a decline in health over the last several years.
Born May 15, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Henry Shelton and Lorena Davidson Shelton.
He had lived all of his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County.
He was retired from the maintenance department of Dan River Mills Inc., Schoolfield Division, with more than 20 years of service.
Survivors include four brothers, Gary Shelton, Bobby Shelton and George Shelton, all of Danville, and Larry Shelton of Dry Fork; two sisters, Virginia S. Potter and Jane S. Haskins, both of Danville.
He was predeceased by three brothers, James William Shelton, Herbert Clinton Shelton and Irvin Daniel Shelton. He was also predeceased by one sister, Mattie S. Haskins.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a sister, Jane S. Haskins, 1089 Sandy Creek Road, off Route 863.

Lettie G. Sours
Lettie Giles Sours, 99, died Monday evening, May 5, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1898, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Thomas Giles and Letitia Giles.
She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church where she had served as church secretary, a member of the Fidelis Sunday school class, and had been the pianist for the Sunday school department.
She had also taught private piano lessons in her home.
She was the oldest living graduate of Chatham High School and had attended Smithdeal Massey Business College in Richmond.
She was married
to Jesse Holt Sours, who died in April 1968.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara A. Sours of Danville.
She was predeceased by seven sisters and two brothers.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Barbara A. Sours, 119 Kenilworth Ave., Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Hillcrest Burial Park by the Rev. Michael Macon.

Shirley Stowe
Shirley Proffitt Shoemaker Stowe, 61, of 1015 Kemper Road Ext., died Wednesday, May 7 at her residence. She had been in declining health for seven years.
Born Jan. 7, 1936, in Welch, W.Va., she was a daughter of Walter Proffitt and Ella Smith Proffitt.
She had lived in Danville most of her life, and prior to her retirement she worked at Corning Glass.
Stowe was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church.
On July 16, 1977, she married
Clyde Blane Stowe.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Shirley Elaine Shoemaker or Reidsville, N.C., Sheree S. Wentz of Danville; four sisters, Sylvia Burchett of Pelham, N.C., Josie Eanes of Danville, Maxine Eanes of Welch, and Leatha Pietron of Pittsburgh and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, W.C. Proffitt and a sister, Vera Thompson.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Myron Bruce. Entombment will be at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover chapel and other times at the residence.
Dorothy Brown
Dorothy Kelly "Peaches" Brown, 52, of Chino, Calif., died Sunday, May 4, 1997, in the Chino Valley Medical Center.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Feb. 14, 1945, she was the daughter of John and Ella Miller Kelly.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Riceville Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Mt. Airy Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin Brown of Los Angeles; two sons, Jeffrey Brown of Los Angeles and Kazi Brown of Chino; four sisters, Mary Lizzie Bennett and Almeda Griffin, both of Danville, and Lelia Younger and Alberta Hairston, both of Blairs; and two brothers, Herman Kelly of Chatham and Leroy Kelly of Blairs.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Ralph Cypress with burial in the Mt. Airy Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. James Bennett, 333 Mt. View Road.

Bernice Clark
JAVA - Bernice Waller Clark, 79, 269 Oriole Lane, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at her residence.
Born Jan. 11, 1918, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Robert and Mary Hodnett Waller.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, George Clark, of the residence; six daughters, Mary Ellen Williams and Mattie Frances Perry, both of Fort Washington, Md., Jo Ann Thompson of Java, Barbara Clark of Washington, D.C., and Janie Elizabeth Davis and Caroline Clark of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Sarah Poindexter of Nathalie; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Airy Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed at the church on Saturday from noon until the time of the funeral.

Louise Gunn
Louise Gunn, 78, 534 Cleveland St., died Monday, May 5, 1997, at her residence.
She was born June 22, 1918, in Pittsylvania County.
She retired as an employee of Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and a member of the Missionary Society.
She was married
to Willie Gunn, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Fred Gunn of Fort Washington, Md., and Walter Gunn of Milford, N.H.; two brothers, William Wimbish of Whitetown, N.C., and Lynwood Wimbish of Baltimore; a sister, Rosa Pinchback of Danville; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. from Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Cypress officiating. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The body may be viewed 7-8 tonight at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 534 Cleveland St.
Dempsey Gunnell
Dempsey Willard Gunnell, 75, 114 Spring Ave., died Thursday, May 8, 1997, at his residence. He had been in declining health for six months.
Born Sept. 13, 1921, he was the son of Thomas and Bessie Berry Gunnell.
He had lived all of his life in Danville.
He served with the U.S. Marines in World War II.
He had worked for Dan River Inc. for several years and retired from Cone Mills Inc. in Greensboro, N.C., as a loom fixer.
He was a member of Westover Baptist Church and American Legion Post 325.
He was married
to Vivian Buckner Gunnell, who died Dec. 19, 1985.
Survivors include two daughters, Gloria G. Burnette and Phyllis G. Wentz, both of Danville; one brother, Kenneth Gunnell of Pelham, N.C.; five sisters, Doris G. Shively of Chatham, Helen G. Powell and Viola G. Carter, both of Danville, Florine G. Johnson of Phenix and Ruby G. Trollinger of Haw River, N.C.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. from Westover Baptist Church by the Rev. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Westover Baptist Church and at other times at 114 Spring Ave. off U.S. 58 West.

Robert Luck
Robert Taze Luck, 83, of 460 Parker Road, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, in Danville Reigonal Medical Center.
Born March 14, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Paul Luck and Mattie Keesee Luck. He was married
to Ruth Luck, who predeceased him.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was retired from the U.S. Postal Service in New York and was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Virginia Logan of Chatham; one sister, Minnie Luck of Danville; nin grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home in Gretna by the Rev. G.H. Pass. Burial with military honors by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 of Danville will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
