Joel Marable
SOUTH BOSTON - Joel Marable, 76, 14066 River Road, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997.
Born Feb. 9, 1921, in Halifax County, he was a son of Alger and Mary Queen Kirby Marable.
Educated in Halifax County schools, Marable graduated from Halifax Training School. After serving in the U.S. Army, he attended Virginia State College, where he majored in agriculture.
Many of his working years were spent at the Danville Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant.
He was a member of New Arbor Baptist Church and Sunday school.
On Jan. 1, 1947, he was married
to Retha Tucker Marable.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Anna M. Gee of Richmond, Queen M. Bass of Durham, N.C., and Aretha M. Cunningham of Alexandria; two sisters, Anna L. Robinson of Guttenburg, N.J., and Melissa C. Lewis of Albany, N.Y.; and one brother, E. Dewy Kirby of Detroit; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at New Arbor Baptist Church by Dr. Lewis Motley. Burial will be in the family cemetery. Remains may be viewed 6:30-8:30 tonight at the Daniel Funeral Home chapel in Halifax. Remains will lie in state at the church one hour before the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Deborah Robinson
Deborah Mozelle Robinson, 67, of Richmond died Monday, May 5, 1997, at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
She was born Jan. 25, 1930, in Danville.
She was a homemaker and a member of Abyssinian Baptist Church in Newark, N.J.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Gregory of Richmond; one sister, Barbara Keene of Cleveland; one brother, David Keene of Detroit; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. J.P. Griffith Jr. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Sallie Tune
Sallie Wells Crider Tune, 80, 120 Old Piney Forest Road, Lot 30, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for several months.
Born on Dec. 23, 1916, in Danville, she was the daughter of Oscar James Wells and Susie McKinney Wells.
She was a member of Sheva Church of Christ, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and a member of the Rebecca Lodge #38, Danville chapter.
She worked for Dan River Mills for 22 years.
She also worked at the Gretna and George Washington High School cafeterias.
Most of her life had been spent in Gretna and Danville.
She was first married
to Charlie Crider and then to Langhorne W. Tune, both of whom are deceased.
Survivors include one son, Steven W. Crider of Danville; two sisters, Dollie W. McGuire and Louise W. Emory, both of Richmond; and one grandchild.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Lillian Wells and Ruth Crawford, and two brothers, the Rev. R.J. Wells and Claude Wells.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Sheva Church of Christ in Chatham by the Rev. Larry Owen and the Rev. Freddie Vicks. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, and at other times at 120 Old Piney Forest Road, Lot 30.
Mary Barker
Mary Virginia Barker, 82, died Friday, May 9, 1997 at the Riverside Health Care Center where she had been a resident since January.
Born in Blanch, N.C., Nov. 24, 1914, she was a daughter of Benjamin E. Barker and Margaret Scott Barker.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Benjamin Edwin Barker Jr. and James Scott Barker; and a sister, Helen Barker Bass.
She is survived by a nephew, Verne Barker of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at the Lebanon Christian Church cemetery in Semora, N.C., by the Rev. David Abernathy.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Bernice Barker, 225 Lipton Lane.

Kathleen Dees
Kathleen "Kay" Dees, 68, of 612 Brightwell Drive, died Thursday, May 8, 1997, at her residence.
Born July 17, 1928, in Spangler, Pa., she was a daughter of Charles Mason O'Donnell and Thelma Stoltz O'Donnell.
She attended numerous public and parochial schools.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Danville Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.
She was married
to Donald O. Dees on Nov. 30, 1957.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a son, Dr. Charles D. Dees of San Antonio, Texas.
A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father David V. McGuire. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
Wake services will be held 7 p.m. Sunday in the Swicegood Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the Swicegood Funeral Home 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. At other times the family will be at the residence.
Barbara P. Fry
Barbara Payne Fry, 56, 145 Applewood Drive, died Friday evening, May 9, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a two-year decline in health.
Born Oct. 19, 1940, in Danville, she was the daughter of Joseph E. Payne and Nina Ewing Payne.
She was married
to George K. Fry.
She had spent all her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and attended Full Gospel Fellowship Church.
In addition to her mother of Danville and husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, Terry Lee Fry, Randy Darryl Fry and Kevin George Fry, all of Danville; two daughters, Lori Inman and Lisa Joann Alfred, both of Danville; two brothers, Billy S. Payne and Larry E. Payne, both of Danville; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Revs. Roger L. Ewing and Gilbert Hawks. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, and other times will be at the residence of her mother, Nina Ewing Payne, 132 Applewood Drive.
Nancye Donahoe
Nancye Harper Donahoe, 74, of Danville, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Beaufort L. and Annie H. Harper.
She was a school administrator with the Danville Public Schools. She worked for 36 years before retiring in 1983 due to disability.
She graduated from Whitmell Farm Life School and received her A.B. and M.Ed. degrees from Lynchburg College. She also attended Mary Washington College and the University of Virginia.
She was a member of Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma; the Dorothea Henry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; and the Dan River Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.
She was also a member of West Main Baptist Church.
On June 20, 1947, she was married
to Joseph S. Donahoe, who survives.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Harper Donahoe of Chesapeake; three sisters, Elizabeth H. Yeatts of Danville, Katherine Easley of Chatham and Frances H. Powell of Falls Church; and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, J. Stephen Donahoe Jr.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at West Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce E. Wilson, the Rev. T. Anthony Pollard and Dr. William H. Pollock.
Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence.
Robert Plaster
CHATHAM - Robert Spencer Plaster, 64, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C. He had Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis for two years and died of pneumonia.
Son of the late Claude Spencer Plaster and Ruth Pendergraph Plaster, he is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine Sours Plaster; daughter, Susan C. Plaster Aylor of Chatham; a son, R. Spencer Plaster Jr. of Danville; three granddaughters, Amy Catherine Keller, Elizabeth Ann Keller and Ann Elise Plaster; step-mother, Edith Cook Plaster of Winston-Salem; daughter-in-law, Kerri Ann C. Plaster; son-in-law, Joseph G. Aylor Jr.; and mother-in-law, Catherine Motley Overbey of Chatham.
Born March 11, 1933, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., he was graduated from Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham; and Emory University, Atlanta. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Mr. Plaster was the owner of Bob's Auto Parts. He was a communicant of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 1997, with interment following at the Chatham Burial Park.
The Rev. Dr. John S. Ruef and The Rev. James W. Mathieson will officiate.
The family will be at Scott Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Monday evening and at other times will be at his residence, 301 S. Main St., Chatham.
James Goad
James Woodrow Goad, 72, 120 Old Piney Forest Road, No. 29, died Monday, May 12, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 26, 1925, in Sycamore, he was a son of William W. Goad and Ella Jane Yeatts Goad.
On Aug. 4, 1973, he was married
to Nila Minter Pace Goad, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Southside Manufacturing Co. for 25 years.
He was also a member of Riverview Baptist Church and Auditorium Bible Calls.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Linda Marshall of Danville; a son, Robert Goad of Ringgold; a stepson, Jerry L. Pace of Monroe, Ga.; three sisters, Lottie Watson of Ringgold, Everlee Pierce of Bassett and Mary Pierce of Collinsville; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Kay Richardson.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Duane Blevins. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
