William Perkins
VERNON HILL - William Bryant Perkins, 55, 10135 Chatham Road, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, in Halifax County.
Born May 6, 1942, in Halifax County, he was a son of Willie Lee Perkins and Virgie Mae Dunaway Perkins.
He was married
to Lynda Pruitt Perkins, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Danville, Caswell County and Halifax County.
He was employed by Paul's Auto Parts and was a member of Halifax Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Susan Perkins and Stacey Perkins, both of the residence; two sons, William A. "Tony" Perkins and Jason Perkins, both of the residence; four sisters, Jean Clay, Janice Clay and Betty Whitlow, all of Halifax County, and Linda Cox of Pittsylvania County; and two brothers, Clyde Perkins of Hurt and Willie Lee Perkins Jr. of Halifax County.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Highland Burial Park by Otis Casen.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Robert Plaster
CHATHAM - Robert Spencer Plaster, 64, 301 South Main St., died Saturday, May 10, 1997, in Bowman Gray/Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C. He had Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis for two years and died of pneumonia.
Born March 11, 1933, in Winston-Salem, N.C., he was a son of Claude Spencer Plaster and Ruth Pendergraph Plaster.
He was married
to Mary Catherine Sours Plaster, who survives.
He graduated from Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham; and Emory University, Atlanta. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He was the owner of Bob's Auto Parts.
He was also a communicant of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Susan C. Plaster Aylor of Chatham; a son, R. Spencer Plaster Jr. of Danville; his stepmother, Edith Cook Plaster of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Emmanuel Episcopal Church by the Rev. Dr. John S. Ruef, the Rev. James W. Mathieson and the Rev. William Parrish. Interment
will be in Chatham Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Dovie Scott
FERRUM - Dovie Mae Scott, 89, of Route 2, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, in R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 21, 1907, in Patrick County, where she had lived for the past 22 years.
Prior to her retirement in 1973, she was employed by Dan River Inc. in Danville for 40 years.
She was a member of Christian Faith Baptist Church.
She is survived by two brothers, John L. Scott and George L. Scott, both of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart by the Rev. Lawrence Snead and the Rev. Roy Newton. Burial will be in the Scott Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Jona Scott, Route 2, Ferrum.
Catherine Shifflett
Catherine Long Shifflett, 27, 110 Valleyview Ave. in Mt. Sidney, died Friday, May 9, 1997, in her residence.
Born June 14, 1969, in Arkansas, she was a daughter of Larry and Frances "Tillie" Boyd Long, who survive.
On April 27, 1991, she was married
to Stacey Shifflett, who survives.
She graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in 1987 and from Blue Ridge Community College with a degree in secretarial science.
She was employed as a pharmacist technician by Harrisonburg Wal-Mart.
In addition to her parents of Fishersville and her husband, survivors include a son, Reagan Quinn Shifflett; her twin sister, Elizabeth Fitzgerald of Churchville; and her paternal grandparents, Ervin and Iva Long of Stuarts Draft.
She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, W.T. and Katie Boyd.
A graveside service was held Monday, May 12, 1997, in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Lewis Taylor.
Mamie Temple
Mamie Hair Temple, 125 Dublin Court, died Monday, May 12, 1997, in her residence.
Born Oct. 11, 1897, in Prince George County, she was a daughter of Edward Hair and Alice Hair.
She was married
to Theodore Temple, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church.
She also volunteered at Danville Regional Medical Center.
She is survived by one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Paul Johnson. Burial will be in Blandford cemetery in Petersburg.
Helen Townes
JAVA - Helen Luck Townes, 76, 1000 Java Road, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 22, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Bud and Ella Luck.
She was married
to Charlie L. Townes, who survives.
She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church, where she formerly served in the senior choir.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, Rev. John Townes Sr. of the residence, Daniel Townes of Danville and David Townes of Java; three daughters, Ella Mae Miller, Delois T. Guy and Lorine T. Stone, all of Java; a brother, Charlie P. Fitzgerald of Danville; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. G.H. Pass. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed from noon until 7 tonight at Howerton Funeral Home in Chatham.

Robert Kennon Wells
Robert Kennon Wells, 70, of 142 Cumberland Dr., died Sunday morning, May 11, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 11, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charles Phillip Wells and Mary Elizabeth Barker Wells.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was married
to Fay Perkins Wells, who survives.
He was an Exxon dealer for 45 years, and operated the station on Main Street for 20 years.
He was a member of the Lions Club and Druid Hills Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two sons, R.K. "Bob" Wells of Serverna Park, Md., and John David Wells of Annapolis, Md.; two daughters, Linda Wells Hopkins of Roe and Robin Jill Wells of Richmond; one brother, Jack Wells of Virginia Beach; one sister, Evelyn Fitts of Danville; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel by James McGhee, Bill Adams and Jack Fitts.
The family will receive friends 7 to 9.
Marvin Marquardt
Marvin Earl Marquardt, 80, 123 River Oak Drive, died Wednesday, May 14, 1997, in his residence, following two years of declining health.
Born July 13, 1916, in Akron, Ohio, he was a son of Earl Frank Marquardt and Sadie Wilson Marquardt.
On Nov. 8, 1941, he was married
to Virginia Wecker Marquardt, who survives.
He had been a resident of Danville since 1978. He graduated from the University of Akron in 1940.
He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
He was also a member of Danville Shrine Club and Masonic Lodge No. 83 in Akron.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. as plant manager. His assignments with Goodyear over 29 years included Akron, Indonesia, Peru, Venezuela, Jamaica, Argentina and Danville. He retired from the Goodyear Danville Plant in 1981.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, and was discharged as a major in 1945.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Thomas Earl Marquardt of Hartville, Ohio, and Wayne Arthur Marquardt of Everett, Wash.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. John T. LeGault Jr.

Edgar Payne
Edgar Lee Payne, 78, 211 Lansdale St., died Monday, May 12, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born June 22, 1918, he was a son of George and Lena Lewis Payne.
He was married
to Francis White Payne, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include six daughters, Bernice Barksdale and Helen Woodland, both of Trenton, N.J., Emily Wise of Brooklyn, N.Y., Joan Barton of Queens, N.Y., and Carolyn Garland and Vanessa Miller, both of Danville; a son, Pastor Guy of Danville; four sisters, Eva Adams of Danville, Emma Wilson of Chatham, Nancy Payne of Chester, Pa., and Georgia Taylor of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, Linwood Payne of Danville, Willie Payne of Sharon Hill, Pa., and James Payne of Philadelphia; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church in Chatham by the Rev. Dr. H.G. McGhee. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
