Clyde "Sam" Stevens
SUTHERLIN - Clyde Samuel "Sam" Stevens, 55, 19065 Philpott Road, died Wednesday, May 14, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, where he had been a patient for six days and in declining health since October.
Born April 22, 1942, in Halifax County, he was a son of Beverly Mose Stevens and Virginia Alene Perkins Stevens.
He was married
to Rachel Tate Stevens, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Sutherlin community. He had been employed for Shields Brothers Auction Co. as a carpenter for the past two years. He was also a member of Arbor Baptist Church in Halifax County.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Kerry L. Stevens of Ringgold, Tony R. Stevens of Sutherlin and Anthony B. Stevens of the residence; a daughter, Angela F. Quesenberry of Sutherlin; a brother, George W. Stevens of Sutherlin; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Arbor Baptist Church by the Rev. Averette Witcher and the Rev. Roger Ewing. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Lena Whitman
Lena Gibson Whitman, 96, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home since November 1995 and formerly resided at the Danville House.
Born Feb. 20, 1901, in Patrick County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Wesley Shough and Pattie Jefferson Shough and the stepdaughter of the late Bessie Harris Shough.
She spent most of her life in Danville and was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Whitman was predeceased by her first husband, Charles Henry Gibson, and by her second husband, Pierce K. Whitman; two sons, Walter "Buster" Gibson and Charles Henry Gibson Jr.; five brothers, Luther Shough, Kessler Shough, George Shough, Wesley Shough and Carter Shough; and one sister, Alice Cauley.
Survivors include two brothers, Edwin Shough and Jessie Shough, both of Patrick Springs; four sisters, Ruby Shough, Rachael Stanley, Ivory Trent and Ruth Martin, all of Patrick Springs; one grandson, Ronald Gibson of Reno, Nev.; one granddaughter, Sheila Nagle of Sparks, Nev.; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ron Mateer and the Rev. Dave Palmer. Interment
will be in Mountain View cemetery.
Jerleen Mayhew
The funeral for Jerleen Ferguson Mayhew, 64, 581 Iris Lane, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. William J. Soyars. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
She died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following three years of declining health. She had been in the hospital for three weeks.
Born Oct. 24, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Claude E. Ferguson and Flauchie Myers Ferguson.
On Dec. 17, 1949, she was married
to Percy R. Mayhew, who survives.
She spent her entire life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas, where she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Shermont Baptist Church, where was a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Royal Gems and past president of the Women's Missionary Union.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Doris Jones and Donna Hankins, both of Danville; a son, Donnie Mayhew of Danville; a sister, Virginia F. Burnett of Stuart; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Edgar Payne
Edgar Lee Payne, 78, 211 Lansdale St., died Monday, May 12, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born June 22, 1918, he was a son of George and Lena Lewis Payne.
He was married
to Francis White Payne, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include six daughters, Bernice Barksdale and Helen Woodland, both of Trenton, N.J., Emily Wise of Brooklyn, N.Y., Joan Barton of Queens, N.Y., and Carolyn Garland and Vanessa Miller, both of Danville; a son, Pastor Guy of Danville; four sisters, Eva Adams of Danville, Emma Wilson of Chatham, Nancy Payne of Chester, Pa., and Georgia Taylor of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, Linwood Payne of Danville, Willie Payne of Sharon Hill, Pa., and James Payne of Philadelphia; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church in Chatham by the Rev. Dr. H.G. McGhee. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Margaret Keen
CHATHAM - Margaret Nuckols Keen, 91, 4485 Chalk Level Road, died Thursday, May 15, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Nov. 19, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Jesse B. Nuckols and Sara Giles Nuckols.
She was married
to Alfred Carter Keen, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Sheva Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Leonard P. Keen of Chatham; two daughters, Louise K. Schmeling of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Zelma K. Fallen of Fort Washington, Md.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Dennis Nuckols, Santo Nuckols and Kirby Nuckols; and a sister, Bessie Motley.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Chatham by the Rev. Larry L. Owen. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

Virginia Motley
Virginia Page Bass Motley, 85, 216 College Ave., died Thursday, May 15, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 14, 1911, in Richmond, she was a daughter of Onis Baxter Bass and Mary Page Owens Bass.
For 61 years, she was married
to Taylor Hodges Motley Sr., who survives.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co.
For 54 years, she was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of Lucille Rumney Sunday school class, Women on Mission and Current Missions Group.
She was also a member of Sears Retirees and the Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Page Motley Slayton of Danville; two sons, David Motley of Grafton and T. Hodges Motley Jr. of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister, Marquerite Krewatch of Richmond; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Onis Baxter Bass Jr.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from First Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Northen, the Rev. David Gray and the Rev. David Turbyfill.

Madeline Burns
CHATHAM - Madeline C. Mombleau Burns, 92, 12321 Franklin Turnpike, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, in Riverside Health Care Center, following four years of declining health.
Born July 20, 1904, in Chicago, she was a daughter of Joseph Mombleau and Cathryn Boland Mombleau.
In August 1924, she was married
to James W. Burns, who predeceased her.
She spent most of her life in Chicago, but moved to the Danville area in 1986.
She was a homemaker and of the Catholic faith.
She is survived by a son, James F. Burns of Chatham; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Robert "Bob" Burns and Thomas Burns.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park by Father David McGuire.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
