Nettie Meadows
BLAIRS - Nettie Green Meadows, 93, 461 Meadows Farm Road, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home of Danville.
Born Sept. 26, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Doc Franklin Meadows and Alice Pruitt Meadows.
She was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She is survived by a brother, Henry C. Meadows of Chatham.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Oscar Meadows, Otha "Slim" Meadows and Joe Meadows; and two sisters, Cassie M. Shelton and Louise M. Grant.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roger Collins, the Rev. Allen Dawson and the Rev. Harvey Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Dry Fork.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham, and other times at the residence of her brother, 629 Climax Road, Chatham.
Virginia Motley
Virginia Page Bass Motley, 85, 216 College Ave., died Thursday, May 15, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 14, 1911, in Richmond, she was a daughter of Onis Baxter Bass and Mary Page Owens Bass.
For 61 years, she was married
to Taylor Hodges Motley Sr., who survives.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co.
For 54 years, she was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of Lucille Rumney Sunday school class, Women on Mission and Current Missions Group.
She was also a member of Sears Retirees and the Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary.
She graduated from Harrisonburg State Teacher's College, which is presently known as James Madison University.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Page Motley Slayton of Danville; two sons, David Motley of Grafton and T. Hodges Motley Jr. of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister, Marquerite Krewatch of Richmond; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Onis Baxter Bass Jr.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from First Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Northen, the Rev. David Gray and the Rev. David Turbyfill.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
John Cole Jr.
HALIFAX - John Lovelace Cole Jr., 87, of 569 Buena Vista Drive, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 11, 1909, in Halifax County, he was the son of John L. Cole Sr. and Betty Lovelace Cole.
He was married
to Jewell C. Cole, who survives.
He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, and was founder and former owner of WHLF and WJLC Radio stations.
In addition to his wife of Halifax, survivors include one daughter, Janice Langholtz of Rapidan; one son, John L. Cole III of Halifax; four sisters, Mable Barnes of Sutherlin, Lelia Moorfield of Halifax, Virginia Gebhart of Graybull, Wyo.; and Mary Morton Butler of Hampton; one brother, Joel O. Cole of Vernon Hill; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. George H. Gravitt. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Powell Funeral Home, South Boston, and other times will be at the residence.
Gertie Harris
Gertie Williams Harris, 72, of 304 Keens Mill Road, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at her home.
Born March 6, 1925, in Danville, she was the daughter of Rubin Williams Sr. and Maggie Brandon Williams.
She was married
to Charlie L. Harris Sr., who predeceased her.
She had worked in the Danville public school system for many years.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Lee Harris Jr. of Cheverly, Md, and Bobby Williams Harris of Danville; one sister, Mary W. Morris of Yanceyville, N.C.; one brother, Rubin Williams Jr. of Danville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at North New Hope Baptist Church, Danville, by the Rev. Haywood Smith. Interment
will in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 9 Tuesday night at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence.
Mary Hodnett
CHATHAM - Mary Eanes Meadows Hodnett, 94, of 3292 Payneton Road, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born April 14, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Willie Monroe Eanes and Lucy Montgomery Eanes.
She was a member of Church of God Prophecy of Gretna.
She was first married
to Claude S. Meadows, who is deceased. Later she was married
to James William Hodnett, who is also deceased.
Survivors include four daughters, Elnora Betterton and Rebecca Montgomery both of Chatham, Janie Shelton of Gretna and Nellie Marks of Richmond; two sons, Claude Meadows of Chatham and Paul J. Meadows of Santee Cooper, S.C.; and a step-daughter, Ruth Rowles of Chatham; 23 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Alton Meadows.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Albert Moser, the Rev. H. Clyde Crowder and the Rev. Larry L. Owen. Burial will be in the Edwards Family cemetery, Mt. Airy.

Virgie Hylton
Virgie Empress Hylton, 77, of 80 Vandola Road, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, at Stratford Health Care Center. She had been in declining health for many years, and a resident of the nursing home since February.
Born April 28, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charlie L. Moss and Annie Calvert Moss.
On Aug. 8, 1938, she was married
to Edward W. Hylton, who survives.
She spent most of her life in the Vandola community, where she was a homemaker and a member of Vandola Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Charles E. "Sonny" Hylton of Danville; four sisters, Mildred Gammon, Doris Pilson, Pencie Soyars and Eva Mae Stratton all of Danville; two brothers, Garland E. Moss of Petersburg and Early J. Moss of Danville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Reagan Family cemetery on Vandola Road by the Rev. Bill Soyars.

Mary Elizabeth Rice
Mary Elizabeth Rice, 95, formerly of 139 Old Greensboro Road, died Sunday evening, May 18, 1997, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 29, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Albert Edgar Rice Sr. and Maniza Page Rice.
She worked at McCroy's Department Store until 1924 and then worked at McGuffin's. She worked 24 years at Dan River Inc., and retired in 1966.
She was also a seamstress and a member of Danville Primitive Baptist Church.
She was the last member of her immediate family, and is survived by two cousins, Virginia McKinney and James A. Dix, both of Danville.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene Rice and Albert Edgar Rice Jr.; and two sisters, Nettie Page Rice and Susan Emeline "Ema" Rice.
The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park by Elder C.B. Davis.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.
Stephen Romanko
Stephen Romanko, 77, of 3018 Finch Dr., died Sunday, May 18, 1997, at his home.
Born Aug. 18, 1919, in Springfield, Mass., he was the son of Daniel Romanko and Katherine Zvnok Romanko.
He spent most of his life in Springfield, Mass., and moved to Danville in 1984. He retired as a group leader from Package Machinery Corp. after 45 years of service.
He was of the Catholic faith.
During World War II, he served with the 1st U.S. Marine Division.
On June 7, 1947, he was married
to Marie L. Romanko, who survives.
In addtion to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Stephen W. Romanko of the residence and Darrell V. Romanko of Granby, Mass; two daughters, Charlene P. Wcislo of Springfield and Elizabeth A. Johnson of Feeding Hills, Mass.; two sisters, Alice Peresada of Springfield and Elizabeth Grochmal of Ludlow, Mass.; a brother, Alexander Romanko also of Ludlow; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the residence in Blairmont Acres.
Margie Stratton
Margie Lee Stratton, 93, 2978 Westover Drive, died Monday, May 19, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 21, 1903, in Concord, N.C., she was a daughter of Mac Williams and Lottie Chambers Williams.
She was married
to Jesse Stratton, who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc. She was also a member of Westover Hills United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Stilz of Callao; three sons, Everett Stratton and Charles Stratton, both of Danville, and Bobby Stratton of Eden, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Ray Miller and the Rev. Bill Sawyers.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of a son, 231 S. Raleigh Court, and at her residence.
