Robert Tomer
Robert Richard Tomer, 78, 124 Naples St., died Monday, May 19, 1997, in his residence.
Born Dec. 7, 1918, in Fredericksburg, Ohio, he was a son of James Lee Tomer and Hazel M. Tomer.
For 53 years, he was married
to Genevieve Love Tomer, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Akron, Ohio, where he was a truck driver. He moved to Danville after his retirement in 1987.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, John C. "Jack" Tomer and Jeffrey L. Tomer, both of Danville, Robert R. Tomer of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Randy A. Tomer of Oldsmar, Fla.; a brother, James Tomer of Akron, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Gary L. Tomer.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Thursday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Daryl Joyce. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Evelyn Van Hook
Evelyn Virginia Bass Van Hook, 84, 307 Bellevue St., died Monday, May 19, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following four months of declining health.
Born Feb. 9, 1913, in Danville, she was a daughter of Walter Van Buren Bass and Sallie Bette Bass.
On Oct. 1, 1938, she was married
to Arnold W. Van Hook, who survives.
She spent her entire life in Danville and was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Joye V. Wentz of Jamestown, N.C. and Gaye V. Klingel of Clarks Summit, Pa.; a brother, Willie S. Bass of Danville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Leemont cemetery by the Rev. Michael Campbell and the Rev. George Rumney.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Lillian Blomeley
Lillian Perdue Blomeley, formerly of 416 Avondale Drive, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, in Riverside Health Care Center.
She was a daughter of Harry Dillard Perdue and Lillian Hundley Perdue.
She was married
to Harold Hardman Blomeley, who predeceased her.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a life-long member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
She graduated from the College of William and Mary and held a master's degree from University of Virginia. She also pursued studies at Duke University and the University of Arizona.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. John LeGault Jr.

Hugh Goodman
SOUTH BOSTON - Hugh Allen Goodman, 86, died Monday, May 19, 1997, in Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Born May 25, 1910, in Cabarrus County, N.C., he was a son of Edward Goodman and Dora Newsome Goodman.
He was married
to Lelia McDaniel Goodman.
He came to South Boston in 1928 to work for the Halifax Cotton Mill, and retired from Home Beneficial Insurance as an insurance agent.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows in Brookneal and volunteered for the Boy Scouts.
He was also a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Bee Spencer of Chesterfield and Delores Childress of Rougemont, N.C.; two sons, Conway Goodman of South Boston and Allen Goodman of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Halifax Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Delia Earnhardt and the Rev. Charles Wickham.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9 tonight at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston.
George 'Mike' Hatchett Jr.
George "Mike" Bruce Hatchett Jr., 67, 2654 Old N.C. Hwy. 86 North, died Monday, May 19, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 12, 1929, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of George Bruce Hatchett Sr. and Emma Jones Hatchett.
On Dec. 7, 1951, he was married
to Minnie Griffin Hatchett, who survives.
He served in the military during World War II.
He retired from North Carolina Department of Transportation, but was still employed part time.
He was past president and zone governor of Central Caswell Ruritan Club. He was also a member of National Woodcarver's Association.
He was a member of Purley United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Judy Hatchett Schick of Lexington, N.C., and Emma Jean Hatchett Rich of Dry Fork; two sons, Bruce Wayne Hatchett of Semora, N.C., and Jerry Allen Hatchett of Yanceyville, N.C.; a brother, Thomas Henry Hatchett of Blairs; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Purley United Methodist Church by the Rev. Floyd Morrow. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Rebecca Kendrick
BLAIRS - Rebecca Adams Kendrick, 72, 737 Mac Road, died Monday, May 19, 1997, in her residence.
Born Sept. 20, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Edward Moffett Adams and Hester Slayton Adams.
On April 15, 1946, she was married
to Loyd Keen Kendrick, who died Jan. 5, 1995.
She spent her entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County.
Prior to her retirement, she owned and operated ReDan Kennels. She was also owner and founder of Pittsylvania County Pet cemetery.
She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Richard Keen Kendrick of Salisbury, N.C.; and a sister, Doris A. Maki of Richmond.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Mildred A. Wright.
A private service will be conducted Wednesday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. William C. Taylor.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence, off Spring Garden Road, Route 640.
Lillian Meadows
Lillian Barbour Meadows, 77, 114 Bradford St., died Saturday, May 17, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following six months of declining health.
Born Sept. 19, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Millard Barbour and Gertrude Hines Barbour.
On Jan. 24, 1954, she was married
to Logan Ben Meadows, who died Sept. 2, 1965.
She spent her entire life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Inc. for several years. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a nurse's aid for Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by two daughters, Liz M. Dodson of Danville and Arlene M. Huff of Virginia Beach; several brothers and sisters; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service was conducted 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Kyle Flora.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Liz M. Dodson, 155 Seminole Drive, Danville.

Mabel Merricks
ROCKY MOUNT - Mabel Wells Merricks, 98, of Elder Care, and formerly of Callands and 205 Broad St., Martinsville, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, in Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Born June 27, 1898, in Callands, she was a daughter of Charles Wesley Wells and Ida Hankins Wells.
She was married
to Walter B. Merricks, who died in May 1953.
She was a member of County Line Christian Church and also attended Forest Hill Christian Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Angie Merricks Hatchett of Martinsville, Janice Merricks Eggleston of Dyer Store community and Peggy Merricks Davenport of Richmond; two sons, Obie R. Merricks of Martinsville and Trenton D. Merricks of Newark, Ohio; three sisters, Mattie Sue Pearce and Elise Caldwell, both of Washington, D.C., and Ruby Deyerle of Richmond; 25 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three sons, Garry Edward Merricks, Charles David Merricks and W.B. Merricks Jr.; five brothers, Jabe Wells, Obie Wells, P.C. Wells, Lloyd Wells and Carroll Wells; and two sisters, Sally Fannie Wells and Mary Wells.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from County Line Christian Church by the Rev. J.D. Hunt III and the Rev. Dean Ashby. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at County Line Christian Church.
