Judson G. Holt
SOUTH BOSTON - Judson G. Holt, 91, 8117 Philpott Road, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 5, 1905, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Calvin Lea Holt and Lucy Dodson Holt.
For 70 years, he was married
to Bertha B. Holt, who died May 2, 1997.
He spent his entire life in Caswell County, where he was a farmer and was employed by Forestry Consultant prior to his retirement.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by a daughter, Laura H. Collie; and two sons, Kenneth G. Holt and Charles L. Holt.
Marley Funeral Home of Yanceyville, N.C., is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.
Sally Ricketts
Sally W. Ricketts, 78, 396 Overby St., died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born July 7, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Harvey Ricketts Sr. and Nannie Jennings Ricketts.
She lived in Keeling until she moved to Danville in 1982.
She was a former member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Mary B. Wilkins and Mrs. Henry Talbott, both of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jimmy Hussey.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Henry Talbott, 317 Deercrest Lane, Danville.
Opal Rush
TUCSON, ARIZ. - Opal Catherine Rush, 72, died Monday, May 19, 1997, in Vencor Hospital.
Born July 9, 1924, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Katie Haraway Moore.
She was married
to Al Rush, who predeceased her.
She spent her entire life in Arizona and Ohio, where she was a housewife.
She was also of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by two sons, Billy Rush and John Allen Rush, both of Ohio; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park in Danville by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks.

Charles Cravens Sr.
DANVILLE, Ill. - Charles Anderson Cravens Sr., 71, 19 Iowa St., died Thursday, May 20, 1997, in the Veterans Administration Hospital.
Born June 23, 1925, in Danville, Ill., he was a son of Presley M. Cravens and Amelia Vickery Cravens.
He was married
to Barbara Motley Cravens, who predeceased him.
He was a member of First Church of Christ in Danville, Ill.
Survivors include three sons, Charles A. "Andy" Cravens Jr. of Chatham, Va., George David Cravens of Danville, Ill., and Jonathan Dale Cravens of Potomac, Ill.; a daughter, Amelia Louise Cravens of Danville, Ill.; two sisters, Helen C. Rasnett and Martha C. Lucille, both of Danville, Ill.; a brother, Ralph Cravens of Danville, Ill.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Oak Grove Christian Church cemetery, on U.S. 29, north of Chatham, by the Rev. Frank B. Fuller.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a son, Charles A. Cravens Jr., 22321 U.S. 29 North, Chatham.

Edith Dyer
SOUTH BOSTON - Edith Conner Dyer, 80, 7244 Philpott Road, died Friday, May 23, 1997, in Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 3, 1916, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Lemmie T. Conner and Ruby Wilborn Conner.
She was married
to Gilbert G. Dyer, who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a LPN at the Woodview.
She was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church.
She was also a member of Town & Country Senior Citizens Club and the AARP.
Survivors include two stepdaughters, Rochelle Rudder of South Boston and Joanne Hudson of Oriental, N.C.; three stepsons, Grant Dyer and Ralph Dyer, both of South Boston, and Billy Dyer of Ringgold; four sisters, Evelyn Owen of South Boston, Marion Gordon of Alton, Artie Schweichert of Richmond and Jean Poole of Princeton, N.C.; two brothers, Glenn Conner of Richmond and Carl Conner of Amherst; 12 stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston by the Rev. Leonard Watlington. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens in South Boston.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a sister, Evelyn Owen, 7244 Philpott Road, South Boston.
Lorens Florell
MARTINSVILLE - Lorens Thurlow Florell, 79, 107 Settlers Bend Road, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, in Kings Grant Retirement Community, following a year of declining health.
Born Nov. 9, 1917, in Colton, S.D., he was a son of Lorens H. Florell and Nell LeMar Florell.
Mr. Florell moved to Danville in 1966, where he was personnel manager for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 41 years prior to his retirement. In 1993, he and his wife made their home in Martinsville.
Mr. Florell was a graduate of the University of Kansas, where in 1938 he was a member of the basketball team which won the Big Six Championship under coach "Phog" Allen. Mr. Florell was also a personal friend of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball.
He was a member of the original management of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. He had a reputation for promoting goodwill among others.
He was also a member of the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Kansas. He also acquired a B.S. degree at the University of Kansas.
He served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. His rank was Lt. JG.
He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville.
On Dec. 10, 1940, he was married
to Ruth Hoffmeyer Florell, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Kenneth M. Florell of Southern Pines, N.C., John L. Florell of Normal, Ill., and Richard T. Florell of Orlando, Fla.; five grandsons, Andrew Florell, Michael Pincura, Dan Florell, Matt Florell and Benjamin Florell; and two granddaughters, Patricia Florell and Rebecca Florell.
A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Dwight O. Christenburg.
The family will receive friends at the conclusion of the memorial service at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

David Hutchinson
ROANOKE - David Eugene Hutchinson, 49, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997.
He was a son of Dallas Hutchinson and Alma Mae Hutchinson, who survives.
He was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church, where he served on the male usher board and sang in the male chorus.
He was married
to Nancy J. Dickerson Hutchinson, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Roanoke and his mother of Pearisburg; survivors include two daughters, Camille Hutchinson and Crystal Hutchinson, both of Roanoke, a son, David Eugene Hutchinson II of Marietta, Ga.; three sisters, Jo Ann Key of Baltimore, Sharon Williams of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jean Otey of Roanoke; a brother, Dallas Frederick Hutchinson Jr. of Arlington; his grandmother, Virginia Hill of Martinsville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Pilgrim Baptist Church by the Rev. Dwight Steele. Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Fair View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Sunday at Pilgrim Baptist Church.
Friends may call 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today and noon-5:30 p.m. Sunday at Serenity Funeral Home, 126 Gilmer Ave., NW, Roanoke. The body will be taken to the church 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Harry Mayhew
Harry Coleman Mayhew, 80, 252 Parker Road, Apt. 12, died Friday, May 23, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 6, 1916, in Gretna, he was a son of Ollie Mayhew and Lillie Groce Mayhew.
He spent most of his life in Gretna, where he was a farmer. Prior to his retirement at age 62, he worked for Hooker Furniture Co. in Martinsville as a machine operator.
He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sisters, Ella McClanahan of Danville, Edith Kendrick of Climax, Hazel Ferrell of Ringgold and Sallie Austin of Homestead, Fla.; and three brothers, Elmore Mayhew of Danville, James Mayhew of Massachusetts and Roy Mayhew of Ringgold.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Gilmore Hundley.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a brother, Elmore Mayhew, 252 Parker Road, Apt. 12.
