Essie Porter
Essie Marie Porter, 66, 1124 West Paxton St., died Thursday, May 22, 1997, in her residence.
Born June 6, 1930, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Azzie Graves and Lizzie Mims.
She was married
to Calvin Porter, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Carol Porter of Danville; three sons, Carl Porter, Curtis Porter and Clifton Porter, all of Danville; three brothers, Percy Graves of Reidsville, N.C., Herman Graves of Pelham, N.C., and Alexandra Graves of Mebane, N.C.; three sisters, Louise Pool of Virginia Beach, Mattie Lipcomb of Danville and Mary Russell of Yanceyville, N.C.; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday from Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Serenus Churns. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Ponce de Leon Carter
Ponce de Leon Carter, 52, of Valdosta, Ga., died Monday, May 19, 1997, at South Georgia Medical Center.
Born Feb. 14, 1935, in Halifax, he was the son of Jasper and Myrtle Carter, who survive.
He belonged to the Greater Brandon Chapel Church and later transferred his membership to the St. John's Baptist Church.
He graduated from Caswell County High School.
He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he was a non-commissioned officer and a small arms expert.
While in the service, he was awarded the U.S.A.F. Good Conduct award, the U.S.A.F. Commendation medal, a marksmanship ribbon, an academy graduate ribbon, an Army Good Conduct medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award ribbon, National Defense Service medal and a U.S.A.F. Outstanding Unit award.
He belonged to the Mason Order Post Patron Sara Chapter #10 and was a former district patron member of St. John's Men's Ensemble and usher board.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include his wife, Glossie Inetha Carter, of Valdosta, Ga.; three sons, Rockney K. Carter, Donnie A. Carter of Philadelphia and Christopher D. Carter of Atlanta; and a daughter, Agatha Y. Carter of Tallahassee, Fla., and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, 1997, at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church in Alton by the Dr. H.R. Surgeon. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel from noon to 8 p.m. today.
The family will receive friends at the residence of the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Carter, on Piney Forest Road.

Annette Dunn
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - Annette Hoge Dunn, 90, of 341 E. Fifth St., died Sunday, April 20, 1997, in WCA Hospital.
Born May 25, 1906, in Athens, Tenn., she was the daughter of George Janney and Mary Will Atkins Hoge.
She was married
to Frederick H. Dunn, who died June 10, 1985.
She was a graduate of Knoxville, Tenn., High School and attended Maryville College.
She was employed as a reporter for The Maryville Times and The Knoxville Sentinel and as a free-lance writer for several Chautauqua County newspapers.
She was on the board of directors for the League of Women Voters and the Chautauqua County Environmental Council. She was also active in the Unitarian Church of Jamestown, the Jamestown Sister City Committee, the Chautauqua County Crippled Children's Association, the Jamestown and Chautauqua County Democratic Committees and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include a son, Frederick N. Dunn of Eagleville, Tenn.; four daughters, Dr. Frederica H. Dunn of Alexandria, Va., Terry D. Weaver of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Prudence D. Steele of Annapolis, Md., and Annette D. Johnson of Charleston, S.C.; and nine grandchildren, including Amy Wilmarth of Danville, Va.
No funeral or visitation will be observed.
Friends will be received at today from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the residence in Jamestown.

Loren Florell
MARTINSVILLE - A memorial service for Loren Thurlow Florell, 79, 107 Settlers Bend Road, will be conducted 3 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Dwight O. Christenburg.
He died Thursday, May 22, 1997, in Kings Grant Retirement Community, following a year of declining health.
Born Nov. 9, 1917, in Colton, S.D., he was a son of Lorens H. Florell and Nell LeMar Florell.
Mr. Florell moved to Danville in 1966, where he was personnel manager for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 41 years prior to his retirement. In 1993, he and his wife made their home in Martinsville.
Mr. Florell was a graduate of the University of Kansas, where in 1938 he was a member of the basketball team which won the Big Six Championship under coach "Phog" Allen. Mr. Florell was also a personal friend of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball.
He was a member of the original management of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. He had a reputation for promoting goodwill among others.
He was also a member of the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Kansas. He also acquired a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Kansas.
He served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. His rank was Lt. JG.
He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville.
On Dec. 10, 1940, he was married
to Ruth Hoffmeyer Florell, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Kenneth M. Florell of Southern Pines, N.C., John L. Florell of Normal, Ill., and Richard T. Florell of Orlando, Fla.; five grandsons, Andrew Florell, Michael Pincura, Dan Florell, Matt Florell and Benjamin Florell; and two granddaughters, Patricia Florell and Rebecca Florell.
The family will receive friends at the conclusion of the memorial service at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Harry Mayhew
Harry Coleman Mayhew, 80, 252 Parker Road, Apt. 12, died Friday, May 23, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 6, 1916, in Gretna, he was a son of Ollie Mayhew and Lillie Groce Mayhew.
He spent most of his life in Gretna, where he was a farmer. Prior to his retirement at age 62, he worked for Hooker Furniture Co. in Martinsville as a machine operator.
He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sisters, Ella McClanahan of Danville, Edith Kendrick of Climax, Hazel Ferrell of Ringgold and Sallie Austin of Homestead, Fla.; and three brothers, Elmore Mayhew of Danville, James Mayhew of Massachusetts and Roy Mayhew of Ringgold.
A graveside service was held Saturday, May 24, 1997, in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Gilmore Hundley.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a brother, Elmore Mayhew, 252 Parker Road, Apt. 12.

Everett Causey
CHANDLER, Ariz. - Everett "Ebb" Carl Causey, 73, of 101 Harris Place, died Friday morning, May 23, 1997, in Chandler Regional Hospital.
He was visiting his daughter in early April when he became ill.
Born Oct. 5, 1923, in High Point, N.C., he was a son of Shubble Causey and Pearl Marley Causey.
He was married
to Hazel Rathbone Causey, who survives.
He was a retired owner of an uphholstery business, and a member of North Danville Church of Christ.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Dale Gibson of Chandler; one son, Jack W. Phelps of Cincinatti, Ohio; two sisters, Edna Prevette and Beatrice Highfell, both of High Point, N.C.; four brothers, Don Causey, Glen Causey, Hubert Causey and Tommy Causey, all of High Point, N.C.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. today at Bueler Mortuary in Chandler. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday in Danville Memorial Gardens by Minister Clyde F. George.

Buford C. Farthing
BLAIRS - Buford C. Farthing, 93, of Rt. 1, Box 89 F, died Sunday, May 25, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center after one week of declining health.
Born May 13, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William J. Farthing and Virginia Burnett Farthing.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County, where he farmed for many years. He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include neices and nephews. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Nellie Fuller
Nellie Waddey Fuller, 90, formerly of Danville, died Sunday afternoon, May 25, 1997, at the home of her son, Ronnie Larkins, 2401 Krista Kin Dr., High Point, N.C.
Born Feb. 14, 1907, in Columbia, Tenn., she was the daughter of John Waddey and Josie Martin Waddey.
She spent most of her life in Danville, and moved to High Point, N.C., in 1992. She first was married
to Tony Larkins, who died in 1960. She later was married
to Earl Fuller, who also predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Ronnie Larkins and Tony Larkins, both of High Point, N.C.; two daughters, Sadie Melvin of Cambell, Calif., and Doris Parrish of Danville; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Rosa Larkins, and a step-daughter, Inez McGhee.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Chapel by Dr. William Hayes. Interment
will be in Greenhill cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 Tuesday night at the funeral home, and other times will be at the home of her daughter, Doris Parrish, 161 Robinhood Place, Danville.
Branford Haymore Sr.
Branford "B.G." Haymore Sr., 81, died Sunday afternoon, May 25, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several years.
Born Sept. 18, 1915, in Providence, N.C., he was the son of Lewis Cable Haymore and Liza Frances Hardy Haymore.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked at Dan River Inc. as supervisor in No. 1 B Weave for 45 years.
He was married
to Lucille Riddle, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five sons, Larry Haymore of Brandenton, Fla., Kenneth Haymore, Grover Haymmore Jr., Allen Haymore and Jerry Haymore, all of Danville; and two daughters, Barbara Neal and Sandra Wilson, both of Danville; one brother, Cable Haymore of Providence, N.C.; and two sisters, Virginia Mitchell of Dry Fork and Frances Wells of Danville; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Ayleen Henderson.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. John Gentry. Burial will be in Shady Oak Baptist Church cemetery, Walters Mill Road.
