Ollie Jordan
Ollie Phillips Jordan, 77, of 213 LaBoone Road, Easley, S.C., died Sunday, May 25, 1997, in Greenville Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health for three years.
Born Jan. 11, 1919, in Piedmont, S.C., she was the daughter of Joseph M. Phillips and Arbazine F. Phillips.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area, where she worked for Dan River before her retirement.
She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
In October 1941 she was married
to Roy Jordan, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, surivors include one son, Roy Phillip Jordan, and one step-son, Roy "Pete" Jordan, both of Greenville, S.C.; two step-daughters, Sybil Beattie and Pearl Jones, both of Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Sadie Jackson of Anderson, S.C.; and one brother, Ephriam D. Phillips of Belton, S.C.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren and 15 step great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, J.W. Jordan.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Hylton Lawrence. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times will be at the home of her granddaughter, Debbie Shelton, 5945 Rock Springs Road, Sutherlin.
Robert Powell
CHATHAM - Robert Jefferson Powell, 93, of 1616 Jones Mill Road, died Sunday morning, May 25, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 17, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Elijah Powell and Pattie Parrish Powell.
He was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
His wife was Cordie Daniel Powell, who is predeceased.
Survivors include two sons, Curtis R. Powell of Winston-Salem, N.C. and David W. Powell of Ringgold; two daughters, Aldeen P. Gatewood of Murfreesboro, N.C., and Clarice P. Carter of Lynchburg; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Beverly Powell, Isaac Powell and Charlie Powell; and three sisters, Minnie P. Yeatts, Annie P. Pritchett and Callie P. Jones.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roger Collins and the Rev. Bennett Shelton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence.
Verbalena Robertson
Verbalena Hairston Robertson, 78, of 752 Seeland Road, Apt. 2, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born May 17, 1919, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Henry Hairston and Lessie J. ferrell.
She worked at Southern Processing for many years.
She was married
to Precious Robertson, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one son, J.D. Robertson of Philadelphia; one brother, Tommy L. Hairston, and one sister, Mary Alice Still, both of Danville; and a granddaughter.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Chapel by the Rev. Hayes McConnell. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her granddaughter, Stacy Davis, 752 Seeland Road, Apt. 2.

Richard L. "Whit" Rowles
CHATHAM - Richard Leewood "Whit" Rowles, 66, of 353 Rowles Dr., died Sunday, May 25, 1997.
Born Oct. 4, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Ruth Hodnett Rowles of Gretna and Robert Claude Rowles.
He was a member of Sheva Church of Christ, and was a retired employee at Klopman Mills.
During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post 325.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Barbara Yeatts Rowles of the residence; two sons, Marty Lee Rowles and Barry Scott Rowles, both of Chatham; two brothers, Elvin J. "Popeye" Rowles of Chatham, and Claude "C.C." Rowles of Grenta; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sheva Church of Christ by Larry Owen, minister, and the Rev. Bill Soyars. Burial with military rites by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard will follow in the church cemetery.

Julian Wells
CHATHAM - Julian Hughes Wells, 56, of Chatham, died Friday, May 23, 1997.
Born Nov. 10, 1940, he was a son of Bennie H. and Annie Gammon Wells.
Survivors include four brothers, Coleman Wells of Martinsville, Herbert Wells of Darlington, S.C., Lester Wells of Danville and Richard Wells of Kernersville, N.C.; two sisters, Roslyn Lavinder of Belmont, N.C., and Linda Vernon of Rocky Mount.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene Wells, Alvin Wells, Shirley Wells and Leslie Wells; and five sisters, Frances Parsons, Ellnor Motley, Nina Williams, Barbara Riggs and Patsy Ayers.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lynch Funeral Chapel by Elder Dudley McNeely Jr. and the Rev. J.D. Hunt III. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Christian Church cemetery, Callands.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Lynch Funeral Chapel in Rocky Mount.
Muncie Bates
CHATHAM - Muncie William Bates, 92, 2364 Spring Garden Road, died Monday, May 26, 1997, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 18, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Alice Adkins Bates.
He was married
to Kate Pruitt Bates, who predeceased him.
He was a retired farmer and of the Christian faith.
Survivors include two sons, Ernest Bates and Buford Bates, both of Chatham; a daughter, Lois F. Lewis of Bachelors Hall; a brother, Albert Bates of Axton; a half-brother, Woodrow Adkins of Chatham; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham, and other times at the residence of his sons, Ernest Bates in Spring Garden and Buford Bates in Chatham.
Bernice Garber
HALIFAX - Bernice Rebecca Buchanan Garber, 73, 5240 LP Bailey Highway, died Monday, May 26, 1997, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 5, 1924, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of William McKinley Buchanan and Lola Martin Buchanan.
She was married
to Willie Henry Garber, who survives.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone.
She was also a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 8243 of Halifax and the ABWA Tri-River Charter Chapter in South Boston.
In addition to her husband of Halifax, she is survived by two sons, Dr. Darrell Henry Garber of Ft. Thomas, Ky., and Phillip Willie Garber of Keene; and a brother, Edwin Henry Buchanan of Fredericksburg.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from First Baptist Church of Millstone by the Rev. Bob Watts and the Rev. Bob Harris. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Helen Gilbert
RINGGOLD - Helen Turnbull Gilbert, 81, 2332 Miller Drive, died Sunday, May 25, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a year of declining health. She had been in the hospital for six weeks.
Born March 10, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Willie Southern Turnbull and Myrtle English Turnbull.
On March 13, 1937, she was married
to Louis Campbell Gilbert, who died April 7, 1983.
She spent most of her life in Danville, but lived in Youngstown, Ohio, when she was a child.
Prior to her retirement, she was owner and operator of Gilbert's Grocery Store on Hwy. 58 East. Before she and her husband owned the store, she worked for the Pittsylvania County School System as a teacher at Glenwood Elementary School.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy G. Blair of Danville; and a sister, Virginia T. McCrickard of Danville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, John Gilbert; and three brothers, Bill Turnbull, Jim Turnbull and Eddie Turnbull.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father David McGuire. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
A rosary service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 221 Green Acre Drive, Danville.

Annie Payne
CHATHAM - Annie Lue Payne, 96, of Guildfield Heights, Apt. No. 28, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Dec. 23, 1900, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Henry Payne and Betty Jones Payne.
She was a former member of Cherrystone Baptist Church. After moving to the Washington, D.C. area, she became affiliated with Kirklane Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She is survived by a sister, Othelia Payne of Chatham.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Cherrystone Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Guildfield Heights, Apt. No. 28, Chatham.
