Cathryn Jones
CHATHAM - Cathryn McNeely Jones, 78, of 634 Oakland Dr., died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at St. Johns Nursing Home in Lynchburg.
Born June 26, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Edward McNeely and Etta Farmer McNeely.
She graduated from Dan River High School, Averett College and Harrisonburg State Teachers College. She taught at Spring Garden High Scool and Callands High School.
She was a member of Watson Memorial United Methodist Church, and a past member of the Chatham Rescue Squad.
Her husband was Charles E. H. Jones, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one son, Charles Sidney Jones of Chatham and a sister, Jimmy M. Lackey of Forest.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Burial Park by the Rev. William C. Thomas. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park, Chatham.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence.
Freddie McLaughlin
Freddie Albert McLaughlin, 53, of 421 South Hampton Ave., Apartment B, died Friday, May 30, 1997, at his residence.
Born Aug. 4, 1943, in Danville, he was the son of Ferdinand McLaughlin and Mazie Harris McLaughlin, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, where he earned the Purple Heart medal of honor.
Survivors in addition to his mother of Danville include his wife, Deborah Saunders; three step-children, LaCherly Saunders, LaKisha Saunders and Devon Saunders, all of Danville; one sister, Annie L. McLaughlin Wilson; four brothers, Jerry W. McLaughlin and the Rev. Victor V. McLaughlin, both of Petersburg; Phillip McLaughlin of Temple Hills, Md., and Donald McLaughlin of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, at 518 Edmonds St.
Jewell Lewis
Jewell Finch Lewis, 83, died Monday, June 2, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 14, 1913, in Spring Garden, she was a daughter of Dillard Hardwick Finch Sr. and Beatrice Atkinson Finch.
On July 4, 1937, she was married
to Thomas Woodrow Lewis, who died July 20, 1993.
She was a member of Lee Street Baptist Church, which is presently known as College Park Baptist Church.
She attended Spring Garden High School and Averett College.
Survivors include a son, Thomas W. Lewis Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Jewell L. Martin of Charlotte, N.C., and Linda L. Stroud of Danville; six sisters, Emily Lewis of Charlotte, Ruby Walton of Sutherlin, Lois Chaffin of Salem, Beatrice "Pug" Finch of Altavista, and Rachel Durham and Jane Jones, both of Danville; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, D.H. Finch Jr., and a sister, Christine Long.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Lewis Harris.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, Linda Stroud, 730 Robertson Lane, Danville.

Fred Barker
Fred Douglas Barker, 65, 4072 Suburban Drive, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997, in his residence, following a year of declining health.
Born Jan. 28, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Thomas Barker and Iva Ola Howell Barker.
On Dec. 15, 1951, he was married
to Jean Taylor Barker, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Inc. No. 5 Schoolfield Division as a tendor frame operator for 45 years.
He was a member of Blairs Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Douglas Keith Barker of Danville; a brother, Odell Barker of Dry Fork; two sisters, Louise B. Scott and Inez B. Hamm, both of Danville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Luther Lemon. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence, off Route 29 North.
David Fuqua
David Berkley Fuqua Sr., 71, 224 Courtland St., Apt. 240, died Friday, May 30, 1997, in his residence.
Born April 13, 1926, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Daniel C. Fuqua and Lessie Hamlett Fuqua.
He was married
to Mary Strader Fuqua, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Caswell County and had lived in Danville for the past three years.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Inc. as a dye operator.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Tom Fuqua and David Fuqua, both of Mebane, N.C., and Jerry Fuqua of Burlington, N.C.; three daughters, Dorothy Rodgers of Graham, N.C., Ann Goodson of Ruffin, N.C., and Jean Mays of Greensboro, N.C.; a stepson, C.M. Smith Jr. of Danville; two stepdaughters, Bettie S. Josey of Providence, N.C., and Marie Daniel of Blairs; four brothers, John Fuqua and Carl Fuqua, both of Mebane, Richard Fuqua of Blanch, N.C., and Gwynn Fuqua of Roxboro, N.C.; three sisters, Leana Rimmer of Cedar Grove, N.C., Elizabeth Horner of Mebane and Mary Purnell of Roxboro; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. today from Hebron United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tommy Willis.

Ruth Hall
MIDLOTHIAN - Ruth Yeatts Hall, 90, formerly of Dry Fork, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, in her residence.
She was married
to Edward Hall, who predeceased her.
She attended Averett College and Longwood College.
She taught in Pittsylvania County for 13 years and served with the Chesterfield County School System for 19 years.
She was a member of the local Retired Teachers Association and the Retired Teachers State Association.
She was also a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Reaves Hall of Midlothian; four sisters, Ollie Y. Jennings of Danville, Carrie Barbee of Arlington, Margaret Boswell of Durham, N.C., and Patsy Hubbard of Dry Fork; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, Coleman B. Yeatts, William R. Yeatts, Harold Yeatts and John Yeatts.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Bethel Baptist Church in Midlothian. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Garnett Rudd
Garnett Elizabeth Rudd, 92, formerly of 134 Westmoreland Court, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997, in Roman Eagle Nursing Home, following a decline in her health.
Born Nov. 24, 1904, in Ringgold, she was a daughter of John T. Rudd and Roberta Slaughter Rudd.
She graduated from Baltimore Business College.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by United States Fidelity and Guaranty Co. in Baltimore for 47 years.
She moved to Danville after retiring in 1971 and was a member of Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
She is survived by several cousins.
She was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Meade Rudd, who died Jan. 9, 1985.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. James Mathieson. Burial will be in Greenhill cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home.
Roy Wilkerson
Roy James Wilkerson, 66, 501 Pruitt Road, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997, in his residence, following three years of declining health.
Born July 27, 1930, in Danville, he was a son of Levi Thomas Wilkerson and Bertha Lovelace Wilkerson, who survives.
In February 1976, he was married
to Rachel Shelton Wilkerson, who died in January 1997.
He spent his entire life in Danville, where he worked for Dan River Inc. as an inspector for 15 years. He was also a farmer.
He was a member of Holland Road Faith of Holiness Church.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include three daughters, Wanda Wilkerson Cain of Whitmell, June Wilkerson Martin of South Boston and Jennifer Wilkerson Jones of Blairs; two sons, James V. Wilkerson and Jerry L. Wilkerson, both of Danville; two stepdaughters, Deborah D. Motley and Teresa D. Snead, both of Danville; two stepsons, Owen R. Doss of Danville and Steven A. Doss of the residence; two sisters, Louise Wilkerson Bray and Shirley Wilkerson Myers, both of Pelham, N.C.; four brothers, Thomas A. Wilkerson, Bud F. Wilkerson and Clarence J. Wilkerson, all of Pelham, and Darrell B. Wilkerson of Danville; 11 grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 500 Pruitt Road, Danville.

Frank Chaney
Frank Jefferson Chaney, 89, 581 Arlington Road, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, in his residence.
Born March 14, 1908, in the Laurel Grove community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Henry Chaney and Lillie Dodson Chaney.
On Aug. 2, 1943, he was married
to Inez Ellington Chaney, who survives.
He spent his entire life in the Danville area and was a member of Redman Poquoson Tribe No. 124.
He was a retired clothing salesman, having worked for The Hub, Kaufman's and Silvermans.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Barry F. Chaney of Kent, Wash.; four sisters, Mary C. Bennett of Sutherlin, Helen C. Burton of Halifax, Ruth C. Barker of Ringgold and Patsy C. Guill of Altavista; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Chaney and James Chaney.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Ron Mateer and Dr. David Palmer. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
